Bangladesh to protest 'strongly' against shells fired from Myanmar​

Foreign Secretary Masud Bin Momen has said Dhaka will lodge a “strong” protest against shells fired from Myanmar into Bangladesh.

“Usually we lodge a protest against such incidents. It’s a normal thing. We received reports of similar incidents some days ago,” he said after two mortar shells landed at Tumbru border of Ghumdhum in Bandarban’s Naikkhyangchhari on Sunday.

“Now we will lodge a strong protest again so that nothing like this happens inside Bangladesh,” he told reporters.

Police said the shells fell close to a mosque half a kilometre from the border.

Authorities believe the shells were fired during a confrontation between the Myanmar Border Police and a rebel group.

The shells caused no damage or casualties, but spread panic among residents who have been hearing sounds of gunfights for two weeks from the other side of the border.

The foreign ministry on Monday summoned Myanmar ambassador to Dhaka Aung Kyaw Moe in protest of two mortar shells hurled from Myanmar which landed in Bangladesh territory on Sunday.

The foreign secretary Masud Bin Momen said this while speaking to reporters on Monday.
The shells fell at Tumbru Bazar area in Naikhongchari’s Ghumdhum border area at around 3:00pm on Sunday. But the shells didn’t detonate.

Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) members later diffused the unexploded shells.

Bangladesh instantly responded to the incident. Foreign secretary Masud Bin Momen told reporters on Sunday that they would investigate whether the incident was an accident or intentional. If it was accidental, the Bangladesh government will warn Myanmar.

Masud Bin Momen said on Monday, “Today (Monday), we summoned him. We have sternly protested the incident through a diplomatic letter. We have asked them to make sure that such an incident is not repeated.”

Some recent occurrences, like a helicopter of the Myanmar security force entering Bangladesh’s air space and the hurled mortar shells, has made Dhaka anxious.

In protest, on 21 August, the Myanmar ambassador to Dhaka was summoned at the office of the foreign ministry’s Myanmar sub-division’s director general Md Mainul Kabir.
The ambassador was given a stern reminder that these actions from Myanmar are not actions of a friendly neighbour.

Bangladesh strongly condemned these actions, which go against international law. Bangladesh expects better conduct from Myanmar as a good neighbour. After the summons, a protest letter was handed to the ambassador.

Buuut, lets not hype this more than necesary. there is very little chance of full scale invasion by the junta. Even after that, Myanmarese army would be devastated by Bangladesh Army; which is designed to do assymetric jungle warfare.

In addition there is Bangladesh Ansar, which have millions of reserves. Finally there is Islam. Mark my words if any country dare to invade Bangladesh, all that «malice to none» rhetoric will be swapped with countrywide islamic mass mobilization, quicker than an enemy can blunk.

There are 170 million people in BD. Theoretically the country could amass millions of warriors who are experts on survival in marshy terrain. And those soldiers could be replaced by new contigents many many times.

There are hundreds of thousands of mosques, spread even by a few hundred meters distance from eachother, all over BD, and they all have huge loudspeakers.

The GoB loves to play deep love with all countries. Well, this is the BD foreign policy.

So, why is it offensive if one or two rounds of shells are thrown by our friend Myanmar? It is like Daal-Bhaat in the case of India. So, should be with MM. After all, MM is a friend of BD by definition of our foreign policy.

Burmese junta is looking for an excuse to escalate.

Firing a few shells for egos sake will result in the destruction of billions of dollars of assets.

What you are not understanding is that these kinds of escalation is pre-cursor to more Rohingya fleeing into Bangladesh. That would result in Bangladesh hosting thousand more refugees. How is that going to be good for the economy?

I already posted a new clip in the other thread that Burmese are digging new bunkers near the border. They did similar things prior to previous Rohingya push-in to Bangladesh in 2017. A million Rohingya since then are still being a burden on Bangladesh.

Diplomacy doesn't work on savages like the Burmese. They need to be taught a lesson in the only way they understand. Just like we used to do in the 80s and 90s. That is by killing a bunch of these savages. And a few mortar shells towards their way won't trigger a war either. They have insurgency across the country right now. A war with Bangladesh is the last thing they will want.

There are only 400,000 left in Myanmar as opposed to 1.2 million in BD and a million in other counries.

They are emotional and simply unable to see the big picture and also do not really understand military capabilities as they think that MAF can take out BD's 18 TRG-300s that are "shoot and scoot" systems and will be well hidden in large forests in BD when not being fired.

You are overestimating the capabilities of TRG 300s. They are great but on their own aren't a game changer, at least not in the quantity we have in place. Burmese also have more potent system like SY 400/ DF-12A in their inventory.

A comparable example of their vulnerability is Russian Tornado MLRS which are also shoot and scoot system, got picked off by Ukrainian drones.

We will just have to agree to disagree on this one.
