  • 25-member Executive Committee of Association of Bangladesh-China Alumni declared with a key goal to bolster Dhaka-Beijing bilateral ties

DHAKA, Bangladesh: Experts at an international webinar on October 20 urged Bangladesh to apply Chinese experiences in eliminating poverty and achieving the goal of promoting the Country to the list of developed nations by 2041.
The webinar entitled “Poverty Eradication: Experiences from Bangladesh and China” was held on the occasion of declaring a 25-member and two-year-long executive committee of the Association of Bangladesh-China Alumni (ABCA).
“Both Bangladesh and China are among the most populous countries in the world and poverty alleviation for both states is very important,” said education minister of Bangladesh, Dr. Dipu Moni, while addressing the webinar as the chief guest.
She added that Bangladesh has been learning a lot from its biggest development partner, China, in poverty alleviation. “But, at the same time other countries are learning from Bangladesh a lot on how we have progressed tremendously under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina”.
Referring to the deep-rooted ties between the two Asian nations, Moni added that people normally talk about the 46 years of diplomatic relationship between Bangladesh and China. “But I believe that the friendship between the two countries goes back at least 2,000 years”.
She appreciated the Chinese outstanding contribution in Bangladesh’s socio-economic and education sectors and urged the Asian giant to strengthen it in days to come.
Underlining the observations of some speakers, Moni said that for creating more skilled and time-befitting human resources Bangladesh is putting emphasis on technical and vocational education and training.
She welcomed the newly declared executive committee of the ABCA with Ambassador Munshi Faiz Ahmad as President of the association and Professor Dr. Shahabul Haque as general secretary.
Meanwhile, the Chinese envoy in Bangladesh Li Jiming appreciated the strong leadership of Sheikh Hasina for rapid alleviation of poverty from the country and excellent development.
He also credited China for the development of Bangladesh and said that China is now the “top destination” for Bangladeshi students in higher education abroad. Currently, nearly 12,000 Bangladeshi students are studying in China.
Jiming added that many Bangladeshi professionals in different areas including health, education, and engineering have achieved their higher degrees from China and are now contributing a significant role in their home country.
He urged Bangladesh to adopt some well-designed plans with specific measures for poverty alleviation within a specific timeframe as did China above four decades ago.
Meanwhile, the keynote speaker at the webinar Dr. Qazi Kholiquzzaman Ahmad, Chairman of Palli Karma-Sahayak Foundation (PKSF), Bangladesh, said that the poverty level of both Bangladesh and China was almost the same in the 1970s.
But China is now a poverty-free Country. Long-term and well-thought plans, as well as the hard labor of the Chinese people and its leaders, have contributed to making this miracle possible.
The noted economist, however, noted that there are some basic differences between Bangladesh and China in terms of geographical and other factors.
“Bangladesh is a low lying country with 54 rivers crossing through the Country that has originated in the Himalayan mountains and downing from upstream India and as a result, the Country frequently suffers from floods and other natural disasters including cyclones.”
Addressing Bangladesh as a “highly climate-vulnerable” Country, he added that floods, cyclones, river erosions, salinity, and other natural disasters have a very adverse impact on Bangladesh.
On the other hand, divisive politics also create bars on the way to take integrated measures and national consensus to eradicate poverty, he noted.
He advised the government to properly categorize the poor people like ultra-poor, urban poor, and vulnerable poor and rehabilitated them properly with livelihoods and shelters.
In sharing the Chinese model of eradicating poverty, Professor Dr. Li Xiaoyun at China Agricultural University (CAU) and Honorary Dean of College of International Development and Global Agriculture said that China has been taking various steps since 1949 to eliminate poverty like “took lands from landlords and distributed it to peasants after the 1950 Agrarian Law”.
About the rapid developmental change in China he added that from 1949 to 1978, the average life expectancy increased from 35 years old to 68 years old in the country.
“From 1949 to 1978, the illiteracy rate decreased from 80% to 18.5%,” he said while presenting his power-point presentation at the webinar.
Bangladesh’s State Minister for Planning, Shamsul ALam, urged the ABCA to play a role like a bridge to bolster bilateral relations between Bangladesh and China.
Appreciating Chinese continuous support to Bangladesh in its development, he added that the 8th five-year plan of the Bangladesh government has been designed with priority to alleviate poverty.
The program was also addressed, among others, by Zhuang Lifeng, Founder President of Overseas Chinese Association in Bangladesh; Dr. Binayak Sen, Director General of Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies (BIIDS); Chai Xi, former Chinese Ambassador in Bangladesh and Professor Dr. Mohammad Mainul Islam, vice president of ABCA.

Dipu moni was never the brightest bulb in the room.

She got some kind of medical diploma in a three week course in the US and calls herself a "medical expert".

This lackluster dimbulb dehati khet idiot was in charge of the foreign ministry and because of her eff-ups, was given the education ministry in a cabinet reshuffle where she is doing her lackluster magic....

Bangladesh wants to learn from China's land reform?
How does the Bangladesh govt turn private land into public land? It's impossible.

Do not please worry about land reform in BD. Our ministers are good at talking and there is no coordination among ministers or ministries.

And even if our great BD govt turns private lands into public property, the fundamentals will change only for the worse.

We have a great tradition of saying something in the presence of journalists without meaning it.

Maybe Bangladesh need some new modern fertilizer plant first, they can solve many problems for the farmers, they will get more pay with sufficient fertilizer.

BD has quite a number of Urea fertilizer factories and we import phosphate from Jordan to feed the "Triple-superphosphate Fertilizer Factory" in Patenga, Chittagong. We are sufficient for now. But one fertilizer factory, "Ghorasal Urea Fertilizer Factory" has ceased production.

This Ghorasal was built and later renovated by Toyo Engineering Company of Japan. All other urea factories were built by Japanese engineering companies. One Urea factory, "Polash Fertilizer Factory" was built by China.

However, our govt authority for some reason wants a Japanese company, Toyo Engineering to build the next one.

But, her being the BAL education minister why should she talk about unrelated things?

Good comment @bluesky bhai.

For @MH.Yang please understand that Bangladesh cabinet is not like China CCP Politburo.

Unlike Politburo (where the members are mostly picked based on merit and is a meritocracy), the leaders and people comprising the cabinets and portfolios in Bangladesh (and also India) are MOSTLY unqualified and corrupt folks who were former local leaders, party stalwarts and goons, rewarded for 'Handling' elections for Hasina.

People in Bangladesh don't consider most of these people at all qualified to hold their cabinet posts, these are open secrets. Most of them are underclass uneducated dimbulb party goons.

To foreign powers in the US and EU, this is exactly who they want in power to do their ongoing bidding, as these corrupt Bangladeshi ministers can be easily manipulated by bribes.

There are IMHO certain exceptions (Foreign Ministry, Power Ministry and Planning Ministry comes to mind where educated folks are in charge as ministers). But those are exceptions rather than the norm.

There has been successive cabinet re-shuffles trying to boot out these uneducated party goons, but if most of all the apples in the basket are rotten, then you got slim pickings.

Gadha (donkey) will always be gadha @bluesky bhai.

Hasina gave her, her post - because she is big on rewards.

Dipu's father MA WADUD was a close compatriot of the Sheikh's and a founding member of AL....

This khet unkempt woman is not fit enough to run a primary school, and she is running a cabinet portfolio.

This was the foreign minister prior to her (the guy was highly educated, a member of the Pakistan Civil Service and had a pedigree),

"Dr Iftekhar Ahmed Chowdhury obtained a MA and PhD, both in International Relations, at the Australian National University in Canberra, having stood First in First Class in Political Science Honours at the Dacca University. Earlier he had studied at the prestigious St Gregory’s High School and Notre Dame college in Dhaka, obtaining High First Division in Matriculation and Intermediate of Arts public examinations.

His post-graduate mentors included Professors Hedley Bull, Bruce Miller, Desmond Ball, and Geoffrey Jukes. His interests focused on strategic analysis, arms control and non-proliferation, and war studies, which were to remain with him throughout his later career.

He is a former Bangladeshi Minister of Foreign Affairs (2007-2009), a position he held after a long career in diplomacy and the Civil Service, starting in Pakistan in 1969, thereafter transferring to Bangladesh after the nation gained independence in 1971.

He served as Bangladesh’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York (2001-2007), and in Geneva (1996-2000). He was also Ambassador to Qatar (1994-1996), and accredited to Chile, Peru, and the Holy See (Vatican).

An international civil servant for a brief period, he was Special Advisor to the Secretary General of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) in 2000.

After four decades of working with the government, he joined the academia as a scholar in 2009. He was Principal Research Fellow (Research- lead in multilateral relations and international linkages) at the Institute of South Asian Studies (ISAS) of the National University of Singapore (NUS). He also taught courses at the Nanyang Technological University and at the Lee Kuan Institute of Public policy in Singapore. He joined the corporate world in 2020, assuming the post of Group Senior Advisor to Meinhardt International, a multinational entity headquarters in Singapore."

And now look at Dipu, her only qualification is that she is some AL bigwig, close to Hasina. If you see one of her videos, it's embarrassing, she can't even speak English properly.

By watching the face of Dipu Moni, my dead uncle would have exclaimed, "শালার, এই বেটি কালার উপরে কালা তো বটেই, কিন্তু ওর ঠোঁট দুইটাও চরম কালা। চেয়ে থাকা যায়না। আল্লা তারে আর একটু সুন্দর বানাইতে পারতোনা"? He did not like black-skinned people and used to complain.

Anyway, may Allah forgive me for saying the truth about my uncle.

Ha ha - no worries.

Well people can be born looking ugly, uninspiring and snivelly, but they cannot be forgiven for not making an effort to make themselves more presentable.

She was born into a more-or-less educated family, and got somewhat of an okay education herself.

Then why look like some eighty year old grandma? I have strong suspicions that she may be at least partially a psychiatric case.

I have no respect for people who are lazy, unkempt and don't make the effort to make themselves halfway presentable. And that, especially, being a woman in her position. What an old bag lookalike, think about all the foreign people she met as FM and what impression foreigners made about our country upon seeing her. There are women even in AL who were appointed as ambassadors that presented our country in far better light. :disagree:

Maybe Bangladesh need some new modern fertilizer plant first, they can solve many problems for the farmers, they will get more pay with sufficient fertilizer.

Bangladesh Chemical Industries Corporation (BCIC - Govt. owned) operates many fertilizer production units, six urea, one ammonium sulfate, and two DAP (Diammonium Phosphate) plants. Karnaphuli Fertilizer Company Limited (KAFCO), a joint venture between the government of Bangladesh and foreign companies, produces urea fertilizer and extra ammonia product for export. The total installed capacity of seven plants is 2.8957 million tons of urea and 1.8867 million tons of ammonia per year. The yearly capacity of ammonium sulfate plant is 0.01 million tons. These are estimates from five years ago, they have probably increased by now.

There is sufficient fertilizer production capacity in Bangladesh however new plants are planned and implemented all the time.

How does the Bangladesh govt turn private land into public land? It's impossible.
if the owner don't work on the land, he or she have to give it up to someone else (with some compensation). so whoever work on the land owns the land.

Only DPRK can do this policy, not Bangladesh

Nationalization of land is an important part, but I don't think it's a necessary step. The purpose of nationalization of land is antitrust and more efficient use of land, and I think there are other ways to achieve these effects. For example, land taxes, vacancy taxes, government purchases, adding land to agricultural companies as shares in long-term contracts, preferential use of land for public utilities, and guidance on land pricing.
