Bangladesh is likely to become a member of the BRICS alliance in August this year, Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen said yesterday.

He said this while briefing reporters about the outcome of the meeting between Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and South African President Matamela Cyril Ramaphosa at the Bilateral Meeting Room of Palais de Nations in Geneva.

"Their conference will be held in August in South Africa and the prime minister would go there," he said.

BRICS now has five members—Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.

In the future, they will add eight more countries as members.

They have invited Bangladesh, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Indonesia.

"This will be another area of our financing. It will be good for us, as we need money," he said.

The prime minister requested that South Africa open a mission in Bangladesh to enhance bilateral cooperation.

Earlier, the President of Malta, Dr George Vella, also called on the prime minister at the same venue.

Sheikh Hasina requested him to open a mission in Dhaka. She also requested Malta to import RMG products and pharmaceutical items.

After that, ILO DG Gilbert F Hounbo also called on her at the same place.

Foreign Secretary Masud Bin Momen, Labour and Employment Secretary Md Ehsan-E-Elahi and PM's speech writer M Nazrul Islam were present during the meetings.

Hasina and this Alga Momen think that BRICS will print dollars and give to them. Nothing substantive, but only greed is working to propel BD towards BRICS.

There is no other Indus rial coming untrue in it except China. How China can give away its dollars to satisfy the unlimited greed of our leaders?

Just another scamming scheme, the latest in fact.

Hasina and her merry scammer men.

Alga's Toupée is getting stranger by the day though (see picture above).

Almost hypnotic....I think it will take on a life of it's own and start levitating....

Not only the greed for money in the BRICS, Hasina may seek its member states’ support when she unilaterally becomes the life-long PM of Bangladesh. She may declare the next King or Queen for the country.

By the way, all bad guys are saying in the YouTube that Joy Kumar cannot now enter America and he holds $10 billion in the US banks. He may have fled to Abu Dhabi.

No wonder, Hasina was crying tha there are Continents other than America. By the way, Hasina cannot give free election and then vacate power in the process for fear of conspirating to kill BA officers in Pilkhana.

I have seen at least two IA troops with a kind of gerua dress and Pagri in Pilkhana in front of the camera.

Hasina should be arrested and grilled to know about the entire truth. She knows she would be arrested after her fall. So, so many tear shedding and new friends in the BRICS.

What I hear nowadays is different.

Joy is in Eastern Europe somewhere, a former Soviet Republic in fact. Maybe Belarus.

Joy's funds have been frozen pending an investigation into money laundering charges.

Hasina's daughter Putul fled Canada with her two kids to Sharjah (UAE) - where her husband is in jail doing time for money laundering charges. Over several Billion in stolen money from Hasina's stash. I guess marrying Hasina's daughter wasn't a windfall which he may have thought it was....

But this is all just speculation, maybe based on some fact.

My sources are not infallible - but not total bogus either...

Whichever country they may be hiding themselves, they and their mother Hasina are all in big trouble. Note that she had no business in the WB HQ,?yet she went there. But, no one saw Joy with her.

Hasina probably wanted to negotiate with American govt to release Joy and his money. And as she believes in the BD style of negotiations, ie, bribing, she was probably expecting the same from American govt people, taking bribes and loosen the charges against Joy.

I expect Hasina to go to South Africa (BRICS) and pay the govt a few billion dollars and ask it to give her a small land where she would be declared a Queen for life.

She will die in her Sovereign country away from the American Continent. Am I overdreaming? But, I want her punished for killing 57 BA officers.

Joy has been barred from entering the USA for money laundering. He is a criminal like his mother. Why are you bickering and making personal attacks when someone opens his mouth?

Joy was not seen with her mother when she visited the USA last time. It never happened before.

Don’t play sane here. You must see a psychologist.

Bangladesh joining BRICS. What now?

As the BRICS looks to expand and Bangladesh hopes to join it in August, analysts have started weighing the gains from being part of the bloc that aims to create a new global order to counter the dominance of US and its currency dollar.

Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen on Wednesday said in Geneva that Bangladesh is likely to become a member of the BRICS in August this year.

After a meeting between Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and South African President Matamela Cyril Ramaphosa, Momen said the BRICS Bank had invited Bangladesh as a guest, adding that in the future it would invite Bangladesh to join in.

Bangladesh's decision to join BRICS, which groups Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, with a share of global GDP surpassing that of rich nations' club G7, is seen as a move to diversify foreign relations and currency.

While immediate benefits may not be apparent, analysts believe that joining BRICS will yield medium- to long-term advantages as the bloc actively expands to reduce the dominance of the US and the US dollar.

Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen announced that Bangladesh, along with Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Indonesia, has been invited to join BRICS. These countries are expected to join the group in August during a summit in South Africa.

Professor Mustafizur Rahman, a distinguished fellow at the Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD), views this as a positive step, considering BRICS' status as the largest club of developing economies and its increasing economic and political influence.

"Joining BRICS will deepen Bangladesh's relations with these countries. It will also help Bangladesh diversify its foreign relations," he said. Of the BRICS countries, China and India are the top two trade partners of Bangladesh, accounting for almost 40% of its imports.

Professor Mustafizur recently attended an event in Shanghai as a panelist on the sidelines of the annual meeting of the New Development Bank (NDB), a bank formed by BRICS. He said that the NDB is considering the introduction of an alternative currency in October, which could benefit Bangladesh by diversifying its currency and foreign exchange reserves beyond the US dollar.

Bangladesh has already become a member of the NDB in 2021, and joining BRICS would increase its voice and access to funds from the bank, according to Professor Mustafizur.

Dr MA Razzaque, research director of Policy Research Institute of Bangladesh, also welcomed Bangladesh's decision to join BRICS.

"But we have to keep in mind that it is not a trade bloc and there will be no immediate economic benefit from joining this group," he said.

Razzaque, who is a trained economist specialising in applied trade and development issues, said there will be indirect benefits from joining the dynamic group. He said Bangladesh can be more proactive in global issues and bat for setting agenda, such as technology transfer and promoting bilateral trade, in the BRICS meeting.

Immediate benefits may come as foreign investments as investors would think that Bangladesh is a member of this biggest bloc of developing economies, he said. Also, there is a chance that bilateral trade between the member countries would increase, he noted.

"Joining BRICS will open up issues for discussion and help Bangladesh leverage in getting benefits," said Razzaque.

On the floating of the single currency by BRICS, he said it would be very difficult at the moment as the member countries are not in a position to follow a unified monetary policy like that of the European Union.

However, M Humayun Kabir, former Bangladesh's ambassador to the USA, termed BRICS as a "loose kind of economic bloc" where there are economic competitors.

He said there is nothing wrong with the engagement in the multilateral forums as the global situation and geo-politics are changing fast.

"But it is also important to conduct the cost-benefit analysis of joining BRICS and not joining BRICS as there are issues like de-dollarization and launching of common currency among the members of the group," said Kabir, a career diplomat who retired in 2010.

"As there is de-dollarization and alternative currency issues in the BRICS, there is geo-politics and the USA may not be happy," he said.

BRICS is on expansion

BRICS, which stands for Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, is actively considering its first enlargement in over a decade. The aim is to further solidify itself as a representative of the "Global South" and provide an alternative model to the developed economies of the Group of Seven (G7) nations.

According to Anil Sooklal, South Africa's ambassador to BRICS, at least 20 countries have applied for BRICS membership. The proposed expansion, initially suggested by China during its chairmanship in 2022, would increase representation from countries in Africa, Latin America, the Middle East, and Asia. Some of the interested nations include Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Nigeria, Mexico, Iran, Indonesia, Turkey, and others.

Countries such as Bangladesh, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Indonesia are making progress toward joining the bloc.

Sooklal views this as positive news, as it reflects the confidence of the Global South in the leadership of BRICS.

The relevance of BRICS has increased, particularly for countries in the Global South, in light of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. These nations seek to resist the West's "autocracy vs democracy" narrative, as noted by Ryan Berg, director of the Americas Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), in a report published in the Japan Times in May of this year.

On 1 June 2023, the BRICS Ministers of Foreign Affairs and International Relations met in Cape Town, South Africa, and issued a joint statement. They recognized the impact on the world economy caused by unilateral approaches in violation of international law.

Additionally, they highlighted that the situation is further complicated by unilateral economic coercive measures, such as sanctions, boycotts, embargoes, and blockades.

The joint statement emphasized the importance of promoting the use of local currencies in international trade and financial transactions among BRICS members and their trading partners.

Enlargement of BRICS to boost its economies

The BRICS bloc, consisting of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, is actively expanding and working towards establishing a new economic framework to challenge the dominance of the US dollar.

In terms of their share in the global GDP, BRICS has already surpassed G7 economies. It is projected that by 2030, BRICS will contribute over 50% of the global GDP, and the proposed enlargement of the bloc will likely accelerate this trend.

Even without expansion, the BRICS countries currently have a population of 3.42 billion, accounting for 42% of the world's population. In 2021, the group contributed 31.5% of the global GDP, amounting to $26.03 trillion. BRICS nations also accounted for 18% of global trade.

Experts believe that if countries such as Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, and Bangladesh join the bloc, the contribution of BRICS to the global GDP and trade will increase significantly.

BRICS targets to move away from US dollar

The New Development Bank (NDB), established by BRICS in 2015, took in Bangladesh, the UAE, and Uruguay as new members in September 2021, bringing the total membership to eight. Additionally, three more countries, Argentina, Saudi Arabia, and Zimbabwe, have been approved as new members.

The NDB's new chief, Dilma Rousseff, former leftist President of Brazil, recently announced that the bank is gradually moving away from the US dollar. She pledged that at least 30% of loans would be provided in the local currencies of member countries. The aim of diversifying currencies is to reduce the bloc's reliance on the dollar and help developing nations avoid the negative impact of exchange rate fluctuations, as experienced by Bangladesh over the past year.

The US dollar serves as the global reserve currency, and therefore, US domestic monetary policy has implications for the world economy. Since March 2022, the US Federal Reserve, the country's central bank, has aggressively increased interest rates. This has exerted downward pressure on the currencies of many Global South nations, resulting in higher costs for importing foreign goods and servicing dollar-denominated debts, while also encouraging capital flight.

Rousseff emphasized the need to establish a diversified global currency system during the NDB annual meeting earlier this month.

Unlike the World Bank, no country holds veto power in the NDB. The Bank's president is elected from one of the founding members on a rotational basis, and each of the other founding members must have at least one vice-president.

Insignificant little shits will be exploited by the rest... Come get gang banged, lungis.

Bangladesh wants to be part of BRICS to diversify relations: PM Hasina

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has said that Bangladesh wants to be a part of the BRICS coalition, consisting of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.

She said that a discussion in this regard was held with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa in Geneva (South Africa currently holds the BRICS presidency) last week.

"We were with BRICS from the time of its formation. Now we officially want to be its member as our plan is to have diverse options when it comes to development and bilateral relations. We don't want to depend on just one or two options for the overall growth of our country."

The prime minister made the remark while addressing the press about the outcome of her recent visits to Switzerland and Qatar on Wednesday (21 June).
During the meeting, Cyril Ramaphosa said there is a possibility of taking a decision on increasing the number of members of the alliance at the BRICS summit to be held in Johannesburg next August. He also lauded Bangladesh's socioeconomic and labor sector achievements and congratulated Bangladesh on becoming a member of the New Development Bank.

Sheikh Hasina, at the time, requested him to set up South Africa's Embassy in Dhaka.

Emphasizing the need for trade in local currencies to reduce dependency on dollar, the PM said Bangladesh is open to alternative currencies and financial institutions.

"We are already working to introduce trade transactions in local currencies to ease pressure on dollar holdings," she said adding that details on this will be revealed once everything is finalized.

"We will join anything that benefits us. We are bound to do everything that is favorable for our people. The time has gone when there was no option but to lean on one party or take a side," she added.

The premier stressed the importance of establishing a foreign policy based on peace and said her government is working to establish bilateral ties with both the East and the West.

"When the father of the nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman said Bangladesh will be the Switzerland of the East, he meant a country connected with all and known for its neutrality and advocacy in global peacekeeping. Therefore, our foreign policy dictum has been inspired and curated in line with his famous stance "Friendship to all, malice towards none."

During her address to the plenary session of the 'World of Work Summit 2023' at the UN Office in Geneva, she said, "I reiterated our government's firm commitment to creating a safe work environment, eliminating child labor, ending harassment of women at workplaces, promoting environment-friendly industries, etc. I specifically mentioned that a major industrialized country in the world ratified only two ILO fundamental instruments but Bangladesh has ratified eight out of 10 fundamental instruments.

"I also presented five-point recommendations to make fruitful the initiative of forming a global alliance for the establishment of social justice. Quoting the speeches of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, I said only social justice can lay the foundation for ensuring peace and sustainable development."

In her meeting with United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi, she called on UNHCR to create a congenial environment in Myanmar for the quick and safe repatriation of Rohingyas.

"I also sought their support in expediting the temporary relocation of a section of Rohingya population to Bhasanchar. I expressed concern over the declining amount of international financial assistance, including food aid, for the Rohingya population and emphasised the importance of maintaining the attention of the international community to this end," she added.

The premier had a bilateral meeting with the President of the Swiss Confederation Alain Berset.

On Saturday last, the premier returned home from Geneva, Switzerland after attending the "World of Work Summit: Social Justice for All" held on 14-15 June.
During the meeting, she requested the Swiss government to continue its special trade privileges for Bangladesh after its graduation from the list of the Least Developed Countries (LDCs).

She said, "The Rohingya situation was also discussed with the Swiss President and I called upon the international community, including Switzerland, to play an active role in resolving the crisis."

At the time, a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on knowledge and skills development was signed between Bangladesh and the Swiss Confederation.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina attended the 3rd Qatar Economic Forum which took place in Qatar's capital Doha on 23-25 May at the invitation of the Emir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani.

She had a meeting with the Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Qatar Mohammad Bin Abdul Rahman Bin Jassim Al Thani, on the sidelines of the Qatar Economic Forum. During the meeting, special emphasis on ensuring energy security was laid out.

On the same day, Qatar's Minister of State for Energy, Saad Bin Sherida Al Kaabi met Pm Hasina and hold a fruitful discussion on the continued import of LNG from Qatar in continuation of the ten-year agreement executed in 2015.

Later in the afternoon, Sheikh Hasina had a joint meeting with the Minister of Investment Khalid Al Falih of Saudi Arabia and the Minister of Economy and Planning Faisal Al-Ibrahim.

Describing the meeting, she said, "Very constructive discussions were held on various specific proposals related to the expansion of trade and investment with Saudi Arabia. In this context, we agreed to accelerate the construction of container terminals, establishment of special economic zones and solar parks with a capacity of 400 megawatts through Saudi investment. In addition, I urged the Saudi authorities to invest in increasing the capacity of Payra seaport."

"The Saudi delegation expressed its interest in enhancing cooperation with Bangladesh in food production and processing, readymade garments and pharmaceuticals sectors," she added.

She further noted, "I welcomed the Saudi government's consideration of Bangladesh as a regional hub to expand their business in South and Southeast Asia."
On the morning of 24 May, the prime minister took part in an interview with Haslinda Amin, a Bloomberg correspondent and presenter, at the main event of the 3rd Qatar Economic Forum.

"At this time, I answered various questions related to the economic situation of Bangladesh in the wake of the Russia-Ukraine war, the precautionary loan from the IMF and the possibility of importing energy from various countries, including Qatar and Russia, in the light of our friendly foreign policy, the environment and preparations for the upcoming national elections.

"I reiterated my commitment that my government will do whatever is necessary to keep the development progress of the country going for the welfare of the people of Bangladesh. I also said that the IMF agreed to expedite the disbursement of loans to Bangladesh because we have the ability to repay the loan by meeting the conditions of IMF," she said.

Sheikh Hasina said the Emir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani has mentioned that on my request, he will look into alternative employment for Bangladeshis who have become unemployed after FIFA World Cup 2022. Besides, he assured continued import of LNG from Qatar to Bangladesh on favorable terms.

"During the meeting, I reiterated the invitation to His Highness the Emir of Qatar to visit Bangladesh this year and he responded positively. I called upon the Government of Qatar to continue their active and constructive role in the future development of the Muslim Ummah."

On 24 May afternoon, the representative of Bangladeshi citizens living in Qatar met the prime minister before she left Doha for Dhaka with her entourage.
