Baltic states must develop joint air defence system, Lithuanian defence minister says BNS Thursday, July 23, 2015 It is crucial for the Baltic states to develop a joint mid-range air-defence system, counter hybrid threats and strengthen regional cooperation, Lithuania's Defence Minister Juozas Olekas said on Wednesday after meeting with his new Latvian counterpart, Raimonds Bergmanis, in Vilnius. Juozas Olekas Juozas Olekas

Olekas underscored that the areas calling for particular attention were development of a joint mid-range air-defence system, countering hybrid threats, and stepping up cooperation with Poland and the Nordic countries, while defence cooperation of the Baltic states is enhanced, the Ministry of National Defence said. According to the press release, the two ministers agreed at the bilateral meeting to give more focus to the coordination of their countries' forces on the borderline and developing simpler border-crossing procedures for Allied forces.

The Lithuanian defence minister "invited Latvia to go in with the joint international efforts by sending military instructors to Ukraine." Lithuania is contributing military instructors together with the United States. Olekas also proposed for his Latvian counterpart to consider sending military psychologists to Ukraine in trilateral Baltic format and inviting the Nordic countries to join.

The ministers also agreed to combine effort to ensure a NATO agreement at the upcoming summit in Warsaw concerning the long-term current and additional measures of deterrence in the Baltic region, i.e., additional presence of Allied forces, pre-positioning of NATO equipment in the region, sustaining the strengthened NATO Baltic air policing mission, etc., reads the press release.

Bergmanis, who is in Vilnius on his first foreign visit, replaced Raimonds Vejonis in the post after he was elected as Latvia's president.

they should buy Chinese HQ-9 :D

that would tick of the ruskies

air defense integrated Baltic states.

doesn't need NATO integration but if local countries integrate the system it would work.

But Baltic countries doesnt have the technology to built air defenses.

Poland is going for Patriot system, Germans are going for MEADS and Ukraine is having S300.

Seems Baltic countries will be provided security umbrella from Germany, Ukraine and Poland.

9 or 10 battalions of HQ-9, think a battalion cost $400 million a piece, so $4 billion for HQ-9

low to medium tier can be NASAM II or S-125 NEWA

short to very short can be RBS-70 or Starstreak

all and all to build air defense to fend off Russia and Belarus would cost at least $6 to 10 billion

splint between 3 countries and NATO funding this isn't so bad

When Turkey was not allowed to get Chinese Air Defenses, How come Baltic countries will go for Chinese Air Defenses and how it would be intergrated into NATO ?

it wouldn't be integrated into NATO as a whole

like I said it would be a integrated into a Baltic perimeter air defense.

i'm sure they could make it so it would have IFF to detect NATO planes.

HQ-9 is superior than what NATO has and is cheaper.

best analog I can think of would be SAMP-T Mamba, Patriot is more for anti ballistic missiles, and not the best for anti aircraft

Missile systems, defence systems - MBDA missiles
