British defence company BAE Systems has won the $35 billion contract to build Australia's fleet of new navy frigates.

The federal government has announced the company's Type 26 Global Combat ship will be the design for the naval program.

The nine new ships will be built in Adelaide and will be officially known as the Hunter class.

The Turnbull government says the program will create 4000 jobs across the country and create unprecedented local and global opportunities for businesses large and small.

The advanced guided missile frigates will begin entering service in the late 2020s.

The Hunter class "will be one of the most capable warships in the world".

"The Hunter class will have the capability to conduct a variety of missions independently, or as part of a task group, with sufficient range and endurance to operate effectively throughout the region," the government said in a statement.

Finance Minister Mathias Cormann said the contract would deliver "one of the world's most advanced anti-submarine frigates".

"It will create about 4000 jobs, and it will secure a sovereign naval shipbuilding industry here in Australia for decades to come," he told Sky News.

British Foreign Minister Boris Johnson said the project, which involves the UK multinational defence company BAE Systems, was a sign of a strong UK-Australia relationship.

"Fantastic news that #Australia has chosen @BAESystemsplc Type 26 frigate for its new warship contract, worth up to PS20bn. Even further proof the UK-Australia relationship is stronger than ever!" he wrote.

BAE had been shortlisted for the frigate program by the Turnbull government along with rival companies Fincantieri and Navantia.

The federal government-owned ASC Shipbuilding will become a subsidiary of the UK defence giant during the build.

Awesome news we are strengthening our armed forces, $7 billion for drones, $36 billion for APC, Tanks and now the Navy gets some awesome frigates.

China is the cause of all this and that is very good news we need to protect ourselves from the Chinese and this will help us.

Absolutely, I did not know that China was a threat to Australia in the meantime.
Australia does not have its own solutions about Navy? or is it not enough?

It's not enough our population is only 24 million as of 2018, our navy has a massive area to cover on top of that. So we do a good job of protecting our sea lanes, but need to do more.

Hence why are spending billions on our military, we need to because China is trying very hard to influence our politics, threaten us etc.

According to Global Firepower, our Military Personal is only 79,700 of whom 60,000 are fit for services. We don't have Conscription in Australia.

But we are very professional more so than the USA, Britain etc.

i see..

Australia has got probably the best frigate in the world and it is armed more like a destroyer and can take the whole array of missiles.
By buying from the UK, Australia has brought from a country that will totally support it 100%.

@waz UK needs to sell like this to try to offset Brexit.

you need nuclear weapons

Yeah I know there is a motion in the parliament here to build nuclear weapons, we are worried about the Chinese and their history certainly points to bullying and trying to influence our democracy.

Is Australia not covered by the US nuclear guarantee?
I do not think that the US will like Australia to obtain nuclear weapons as this will open the floodgates to proliferation.

This is indeed something to celebrate. Age old ties trump everything else. Thank you little brother for having confidence in us and we shall together build some fantastic ships. The design itself, along with all tech transfer is with BAE Australia and the ships will bring thousands of jobs to Adelaide and beyond.

This also opens the doors for us to bag the order from another brother country Canada i.e. they're also looking for ships, and the Middle East allies also have requirements. Good times ahead for UK industry.
