In a major embarrassment to Assam Congress, Rajesh Joshi, a secretary of the state Congress Committee, has gone missing with R s. 1 crore which was allegedly meant to be sent to party high command in Delhi.
According to Anil Raza, general secretary of Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC), Joshi and his family disappearedafter he had received R s. 1 croreat Nakashtra Hotel in Guwahati from one Tarh Koyu of Arunachal Pradesh.
"On September 7, the Arunachal Pradesh home minister sent Koyu with an escort to Guwahati to transfer the moneythrough hawala to All India Congress Committee headquarters in Delhi. But for some reason, Koyu could not send the money and approached Rajesh Joshi, who isa close aide of Arunachal Chief Minister Nabam Tuki," Raza said.
"Joshi took him to Hotel Nakshtra and took away the money from Koyu saying that he would transfer it himself. When the money was not transferred till September 11, Koyu and head of a local TV channel in Assam approached me and I tried my best to locate Joshi. By then APCC President Bhubaneswar Kalita also requested Parliamentary Home Secretary Bhupen Bora to recover the money from Joshi.
"Bora even had arranged a meeting between Joshi and Koyu in Guwahati. Joshi said that he had spent R s. 40 lakh to buy a flat in Delhi's Dwarka areaand refused to part with the rest of the money. Since then Joshi has been missing," said Raza.
Though Raza did not take name,Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Tuki happens to be the home minister also.
Tuki has vehemently denied anyrole in the alleged incident of money transfer. "I never asked any Koyu to send any money to party high command. Congress party doesn't transfer money like this. I will take legal action against Raza and the TV channels for dragging my name into the incident," Tuki said.
Bora also denied knowledge of the incident. "It's really unfortunate that a respected leader like Tuki's name has beenused to create sensation. We have not received any official communication from anyone regarding this incident. Only after TV channels flashed the news, APCC president Kalita called me to inquire about the incident. I don't know why a senior leader like Raja made such a statement," Bora said.
On the other hand, Raza questioned APCC President Kalita's decision to appoint Joshi as the head of APCC's media cell. "Despite knowing what Joshi had done and even threatening to expel him from the party, what forced Kalita to give Joshi such a responsibility just two days back?" said Raza.
Itanagar Police Station in-charge, Inspector Makpe Bui, has admitted that Koyu has lodged a complaint against Joshi but refused to divulge the details.
According to Papum Pare SP Hibu Tamang, the R s. 1 crore hasgot nothing to do with the Congress party or the chief minister. "Koyu is the president of All Arunachal Contractors Welfare Society. He won two big contracts in Guwahati recently and Joshi is his businesspartner. Koyu had sent the money in the hand of one Doli Ete to give it to Joshi so that thework on those contracts could be started immediately. But after getting the money, Joshi disappeared. So Koyu has filed acomplaint and we are probing the case," says Tamang.
Joshi, who originally hails from Dibrugarh district in Assam, has a house in Guwahati. His father stays in Chandigarh. He owns a bell metal shop in Tinsukia. Interestingly, a close aide of Joshi said that he had paid him R s. 12,000 two days ago in Dibrugarh.
