'Are we supposed to burn Indian currency?' fume NRIs in RBI queues
There are reports of NRIs throwing defunct Indian currency at the gate of RBI as a mark of protest
Press Trust of India | New Delhi January 12, 2017 Last Updated at 16:28 IST

Enough currency with RBI to last beyond December 30, says Arun JaitleyCurrency worth Rs 5.92 lakh cr issued since demonetisationAre your Rs 10 coins being rejected? All you need to know about India's fake currency businessOne week after demonetisation announcement, crores of old currency notes burned, destroyed, dumpedIs currency fluctuation an opportunity?

After residents, NRIs and People of India Origin (PIO) are now braving long queues to exchange the old Rs 500/1000 notes at 5 designated RBI branches across the country but because of stringent conditions several of them have had to return disappointed.

Tempers ran high outside the central bank branches as people coming from long distances were denied entry by guards on the grounds that they were not carrying the requisite documents.

Many NRIs complained that they are not allowed to speak to officials who could at least listen to their grievances.

"Though I have foreign passport, I still have roots in India. Our family comes to India every year. We have few Indian currency notes and we want to exchange them but we are not allowed to enter RBI. Mr Prime Minister are we supposed to burn Indian currency that we have?," said Ritu Diwan, an agitated US national.

This unnecessary harassment simply indicates that PIOs are no more welcome to the country of their birth, she added.

Dharamveer, another US national, said PIOs generally keep some amount of Indian currency as they frequently visit India because there is no point in paying commission on exchange of currency on each visit.

"Any PIO who regularly visits India would easily have Rs 50,000 to Rs 1 lakh worth of Indian currency and I challenge the government to prove this as black money and forfeit this from us", he said, adding that "this money, we don't spend in the country where we live but country of our origin".

"It is by chance that we are here at this time and wanted to exchange few currency but we are not allowed to do so. It is very frustrating," he added.

Many PIOs who were turned away protested that they don't have crores of rupees but only a few thousand which the administration should exchange.

Frustrated at the "high-handedness of RBI" and the "government policy", there are reports of NRIs throwing defunct Indian currency at the gate of RBI as a mark of protest.

Besides PIOs, many Indian who failed to deposit junked currency notes during the 50-day demonetisation period is also being turned away after standing in the queue for hours.

Disappointed at the flip-flop of the government on the issue, Ram Kumar said Prime Minister in his November 8 address had said that people would have time till March 31 to exchange their old notes at the RBI.

Hoping against hope some are coming repeatedly thinking that if they were lucky they would be allowed by the security guards to enter RBI office for exchange of scrapped currency notes.

Wait till 11th march to see the verdict of the people for the demonetization

hope the Modi opposers will concede they were wrong when the voters give a thumbs up to the exercise

We actually dont care what te Pakistani and the Chinese think about Demonetization as their opinion neither effects us nor our economy. It is the people like @The_Showstopper , @jaunty and others like them who will (hopefully) have to eat humble pie after 11th March

We will give our opinion regardless. LOL

We will see man. Everyone is wrong and only the Modi toadies are supposed to be right. Get off the high horse. The demonitisation has been absolutely shambles. Admit it. Almost the whole world including your allies have lambasted the whole amateur episode. You need to stop pretending that everything is fine or will be fine.

It is a democracy you are free to give your opinion. It just does not matter

Modi is a shrewd and calculative person. He has the power to do what no other politician can do. You will see that the people of India will support him

If he performs good in these elections he is virtually guranteed a second term and I can understand how Pakistanis will be anxious if it happens

Modi is a shrewd and calculative person.

Completely agree, he is one of the most conniving politicians ever-- he knows how to win at any cost. I would never dispute that.

You people are constantly saying from nov 8 that this move is Anti People. But if the people accept this move (they largely havebut election results will give a definite answer) then you will have to admit that you were wrong

This is same as the situation was pre 2014. All the leftists and secularists kept shouting hoarse that Modi will not win but he got an absolute majority in the parliament

It will be wise for nri and foreign invester to stay out of india in future.
They better learn this lesson and hurd virdict wilk prove it.

See the problem with political tools like you is that you can't see anything beyond politics. Everything is justified as long as it helps you win. The thing is winning elections does not necessarily make you a good policymaker. It is not a validation of your policies, especially in a country like India where you can get votes even by playing caste, religion cards. You should know better given that you people keep crying about 60 years of Congress rule all the time. I am not a political tool, I don't campaign for any political party. That is the difference between you and me.

Modi is not going anywhere but this whole charade was an exercise in futility, it is not going to stop corruption, if that was the aim, it has already failed, and it sure as hell won't stop terrorism... you also have to realize that people with "black" are generally invested in brick and mortar, gold, and other "holdings" such as fraudulent firms that only exist on paper.

what the hell, are people really dumb enough to believe that those with "black" are hoarding stacks and stacks of paper money, james bond villain style ?
