Apple exports smartphones worth $1 billion in a month from India: Report

Tech giant Apple made history by becoming the first company to export smartphones worth $1 billion in a single month from India. Apple exported iPhones worth Rs 8,100 crore in December 2022, which took the overall export of smartphones to Rs 10,000 crore, according to Economic Times. This comes as a major boost to the government's 'Make in India' campaign.

Apple and Samsung have been the leaders in exporting mobile phones from India. However, Apple recently surpassed Samsung to become the top mobile phone exporter, as per government data.

Apple's $1 billion export benchmark within a month is a success story of the government's ambitious production-linked incentive (PLI) schemes, which have been extended to 13 other sectors including smartphones.

The PLI scheme aims to transform India into a manufacturing hub for smartphones, electronics and more. Manufacturers are required to submit data on production, exports, investments, and jobs to the government on a regular basis as part of the scheme.

The company is producing and exporting multiple iPhone models, including the iPhone 12, 13, 14, and 14+, from India through its three contract manufacturers — Foxconn Hon Hai, Pegatron, and Wistron, located in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. These manufacturers are participants in the smartphone Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, launched in April 2020.

Apart from the three contract manufacturers, there are some smaller Indian players that are exporting iPhones.

India is likely to export mobile phones worth $9 billion in FY23, up from $5.8 billion in FY22, as per government estimates.

India's export of electronic goods has seen significant growth in FY23. According to the Department of Commerce, overall exports of electronics goods between April and December 2022 reached $16.67 billion, which is an increase of 51.56 percent over the same period the previous year.

Google will start manufacturing soon. But India should focus on making domestic brands, with localization of components.

once there is enough experience with the ecosystem and operations, I'm sure many people will try to start their own ops. Entrepreneurship is still alive and kicking.

This is a "moral victory" for china since china has stopped using Apple products.

We should be focusing on exporting EV two-wheelers. Indians brands are doing really well in Africa and Latin America.

Let's oust Chinese brands first. I am sure these giants will help India drive out their international competitors and install domestic brands who are less threat to their business.

Apple has set another all-time revenue record for the India market, along with quarterly records in Brazil and India, its CEO Tim Cook has said.

In the analysts' call after posting its quarterly results, Cook said late on Thursday that looking at the business in India, "we set a quarterly revenue record and grew very strong double digits year over year and so we feel very good about how we performed".

"That's despite the headwinds that we talked about. India is a hugely exciting market for us and a major focus. We brought the online store there in 2020. We will soon bring Apple Retail there," Cook announced.

Apple is set to launch its own-branded first brick-and-mortar store in Mumbai anytime soon.

On the opportunity in India post-pandemic, Cook said, "We actually did fairly well through Covid in India and I'm even more bullish now, hopefully on the other side of it".

"That's the reason why we are investing there by bringing retail there, bringing the online store there and putting out a significant amount of energy there. I'm very bullish on India," Cook added.

"We are putting a lot of emphasis on the market. There's been a lot going from financing options and trade-ins to make products more affordable and give people more options to buy," said Apple CEO.

Luca Maestri, Apple's Chief Financial Officer, said that the growth is coming from every major product category and geographic segment, "with strong double digit increases in emerging markets such as Brazil, Mexico, India, Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam.

Apple sold 2 million iPhones in India in the holiday quarter (Q4) of 2022, registering 18 per cent growth (quarter-on-quarter) for its flagship device.

The India market share of iPhones reached 5.5 per cent for 2022, an 11 per cent growth (year-on-year).

According to the latest CMR data, iPhone 14 series logged 59 per cent market share in Q4 2022, followed by iPhone 13 series at 32 per cent growth.
