Anti-polio vaccination allegedly kills infant in Karachi
January 21, 2017, 7:29 pm

KARACHI: A three-month-old boy died allegedly after he was administered anti-polio drops in Korangi area of Karachi.

The victim family told our correspondent that a female polio worker entered their house and administered the vaccination to their infant.

“Soon after that, white foam emitted out of the baby’s mouth and he expired,” the boy’s father said.

Parents of the infant protested along with a large number of people in Korangi area and filed a complaint in police.

Police and area people said the polio team also vaccinated other children in the area but nothing untoward happened.

The body was shifted to Jinnah hospital for medico-legal formalities where Dr Seemi Jamali, the head of emergency department, said the boy was dead at the time of arrival.

“Only postmortem report can reveal how the infant died,” Dr Jamali said.

‘Reaction’ to vaccine kills two children in Bara

PUBLISHED Dec 22, 2016 06:51am

LANDI KOTAL: Two minor children died and 11 more fell unconscious because of reaction to vaccines during an immunisation campaign in Bara tehsil of Khyber Agency on Wednesday.

Local sources said that the two minors hailing from Shalobar area were administered vaccines against measles and pneumonia and died moments after the administration of injections.

A simultaneous anti-polio vaccination is also underway in most parts of Bara as part of the national polio vaccination campaign.

The sources said that another 11 children in different localities became unconscious both due to injections against seven different diseases and also after taking polio drops. The affected children were immediately shifted to hospitals in Peshawar.

Local officials said that at least four health workers had been taken into custody soon after the incident, while samples of the different vaccines had also been taken for medical examination.

Reacting to the sudden death of infants during the vaccination campaign in Bara, the Emergency Operations Centre at the Fata Secretariat issued a clarification by insisting that polio vaccine had never caused any death of child as it was one of the safest vaccines throughout the world.

Director Health Service Fata Dr Jawad Habib Khan said that appropriate measures were taken to vaccinate every child in entire Fata in a safe and secure manner. He said that deaths of two minors had been reported from Nogazai and Purdelabad areas of Shalobar in Bara tehsil, insisting that these deaths had not been caused by polio vaccination.

Dr Habib said that the cause of the deaths was under investigation by the agency health management team and added that once the investigation was completed, its findings would be shared with media and all the stakeholders.

Health authorities and political administration in Khyber Agency had only recently made claims about the successes they had jointly achieved against polio as no new case had surfaced since November last year. The death of the two minors in Bara could jeopardise the smooth vaccination campaign in the region which had faced stiff resistance both from militant groups and some refusing families in recent past.

Cold storage, expired vaccination etc etc these are the issues the government has to look into seriously.

I really do not know if these deaths of illness caused by polio drops but it is not the first case.

In many areas kids fell ill after administration of polio drops so the government has to determine the cause of this otherwise such incidents are going to hamper vaccination drive in Pakistan.

I can state one such incident where anti-measles' injections were being administered to children of certain age in the area where I live and the parents here complaint that after a day of the vaccination their kids got high fever and then they contracted measles. Now what is the cause nobody bothered to investigate.

I am surprised that the sensitivity of the vaccines went unreported considering that pak has been using the same since couple of years now ?

not an expert on vaccine but aren't they suppose to make you ill just a little bit so that you can develop immunity

I don't know am not a medical practitioner. Using layman's logic or understanding an anti-measles vaccination should not give one measles right?

Still the government should investigate the cause of these happenings as these incidents are going to affect the polio eradication drive.

some time it does happen if your immunity is too weak.but thats very rare.
Still the government should investigate the cause of these happenings as these incidents are going to affect the polio eradication drive.
i also share your concern .government and related authorities should do something about it

WTF!! it should be investigated on highest priority and if any kind of negligence found than health officials in charge should be convicted for murder.
