Another expedition arrives to attempt K2 summit

Another three-member team arrived in Pakistan from Nepal on Sunday to attempt scaling K2, the world’s second highest mountain at 8,611 meters height, in winter.
GILGIT: Another three-member team arrived in Pakistan from Nepal on Sunday to attempt scaling K2, the world’s second highest mountain at 8,611 meters height, in winter.
The team comprising Mingma Gyalje Sherpa, Dawa Tenzing Sherpa and Kili Pemba Sherpa arrived at the Islamabad airport on Sunday evening.
Mingma Gyalje Sherpa, who is the expedition leader, has already scaled the world’s 13 of the 14 peaks above 8,000 meters. He has scaled Everest (8,848 meters) five times and K2 twice in summer.
He is also the first to have scaled Cheki-Go (6,257m), Bamongo (6,400m) and Chobuje (6,685m).
Last year, Mingma Gyalje stood atop G-II (8, 034 meters) without using supplemental oxygen.
Before departure to Pakistan, Mingma Gyalje told mediapersons that he would try to climb K2 without using supplemental oxygen.
“Nepal is home to eight of the world’s 14 peaks standing above 8,000 meters, but the first ascent of all these peaks has been done by foreigners only. So, I have decided to take a challenge by scaling K2 in winter to have Nepali climbers placed on the list,” he added.
“I believe K2 will be a tough choice this season but we are a very strong team,” he said.
A tour operator told Dawn that the team members would fly to Skardu from Islamabad on Tuesday for their onward journey to the K2 base camp.
Meanwhile, harsh weather damaged tents and kitchen of another winter expedition team at the K2 base camp on Sunday. The team is led by John Snorri from Iceland and comprising Mohammad Ali Sadpara and his son Sajid Sadpara.
The team had arrived at the K2 base camp on Saturday.
On his Facebook post, John Snorri said the weather was crazy last night and some of our tents and kitchen tent were damaged.
A third K2 winter expedition team consisting of 24 climbers from various countries will arrive in Pakistan in mid December to attempt K2 summit.
Meanwhile, Russian-American Alex Goldfarb and Hungarian Zoltan Szlanko are also planning to climb Broad Peak (8,047 meters) in winter.
