KOCHI: It will be a sea of blue at the Jawaharlal Nehru stadium when India take on Australia in the first match of the ODI series on Sunday as the 50,000-capacity crowd at the arena will be donning blue jerseys to root for the home team.
This is a first such effort in the country where all the spectators at a stadium will be sporting a jersey of the same colour as that of a team.
"We are just supporting this objective of Nike (official apparel sponsor of Indian team) to create history when the entire crowd at the stadium will be wearing the blue colour jersey of the Indian team. There will be a 'blue wave'" R Karthik Varma, venue tournament director, said.
The spectators will be handed over the blue T-shirt for "free", when they purchase their tickets, he said.
Kerala Cricket Association Secretary T C Mathew said "This is for the first time in India that the entire stadium crowd will be sporting the blue jersey of the Indian team."
Earlier in a football match, English club Manchester United tried to ensure that the entire spectators would be wearing T shirts with their flag, but that effort was not successful, he said.
By wearing blue jersey, "cricket crazy" spectators could show their passion for the Indian team, Ravi Kallayil, Cricket Business Director of Nike-India said.
