(Reuters) - A U.S. drone strike killed seven people in Pakistan's North Waziristan region on Wednesday, security officials said, the first such attack since a May 11 general election in which the use of the unmanned aircraft was a major issue.

U.S. President Barack Obama recently indicated he was scaling back the drone strike programme, winning cautious approval from Pakistan, a key ally in the U.S. fight on militancy.

A Pakistani Foreign Ministry official condemned all such strikes.
"Any drone strike is against the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Pakistan and we condemn it," the official, who declined to be identified, told Reuters.

Pakistani security officials and Pashtun tribesmen in the northwestern region said the drone fired two missiles that struck a mud-built house at Chashma village, 3 km (2 miles) east of Miranshah, the region's administrative town.

They said seven people were killed and four wounded . It was not immediately clear if the
victims were the intended targets.
"Tribesmen started rescue work an hour after the attack and recovered seven bodies," said resident Bashir Dawar. "The bodies were badly damaged and beyond recognition."
North Waziristan is on the Afghan border and has long been a stronghold of militants including Afghan Taliban and their al Qaeda and Pakistani Taliban allies.

Prime Minister-elect Nawaz Sharif said this month that drone strikes were a "challenge" to Pakistan's sovereignty.

"We will sit with our American friends and talk to them about this issue," he said. Obama's announcement of scaling back drone strikes was widely welcomed by the people of North Waziristan, where drones armed with missiles have carried out the most strikes against militants over the past seven years, sometimes with heavy civilian casualties.

The strike also coincided with the first session of the newly elected provincial assembly of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the former Northwest Frontier Province.

Former cricketer Imran Khan's Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf party won most seats in the assembly and has been very critical of drone strikes in the region.

Pakistan's Foreign Ministry said last week it appreciated Obama's acknowledgement that force alone did not work, adding that the root causes of terrorism had to be addressed.

"On the use of drone strikes, the government of Pakistan has consistently maintained that (they) are counter-productive, entail loss of innocent civilian lives, have human rights and humanitarian implications and violate the principles of national sovereignty, territorial integrity and international law," it said.

damn, only if we had elected Imran Khan, he would have done everything possible to make the americans bend on their knees.

but here we have nawaz, lets see what he do about it.

what I think is that Nawaz is going to continue with the drone policy, and make troubles for KPK govt of PTI. while usual blame game by nooras would confuse awam about whose responsibility it is.

The strike happened after a big gap of no drone strikes in Pakistan.

Who were the people who got killed? any details?

Drone strike operations in Pakistan is being handed over to the pentagon from the CIA....Does that mean that it has changed hands from the intelligence realm to the civil military realm? and in effect can it be termed as a unprovoked military strike inside Pakistani territory and a an attack on Pakistani sovereignty?

Pakistan, fighting a Taliban insurgency, is a key ally in the U.S. war on militancy but, while that is still a high priority for the United States, main concerns there are the economy and other domestic issues such as healthcare.

Pakistan's Foreign Ministry said last week it appreciated Obama's acknowledgement that force alone did not work, adding that the root causes of terrorism had to be addressed.

4 more Talibans despatched to...

It does make sense :rofl::rofl::rofl:

Where are those, who were backing the theory "Attack on pakistan, would be an attack on china"?

They couldn't defend even their own embassies.:lol:

The US should give the newly democratically installed government a chance to sort out the problems in the NWFP. To launch drone strikes practically a few days after the elections will make Pakistanis lose confidence in the government and in effect in democracy. If there isn't any consultation between the US and the Pakistani authorities before the drones are sent in then clearly the US is breaching the sovereignity of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan and this is unacceptable. I hope that the new PM of Pakistan makes this issue the first issue of discussion with the American government when they meet. It would also be an utter sham if innocent civilians who are unrelated to terrorism are victims of those drone strikes.

New government will have no effect on drone strikes. US made it clear, Nawaz Sharif made it clear, Army is already clear on he issue. These are the only people who matter or will matter. It will be business as usual for the next 5 years.

The shameful thing is an average Pakistani does not know who got killed in the strike, no identities, no names, not even sex is known. Were they terrorists or civilians or village defense personnel going back to their home?

Its as if the drone operator and his supervisor has been given license to kill whoever they choose to blow up in that region.

All drone strikes are authorized by the military.

Unless its a target like OBL.

Where are the fanboys of Naya KPK??
@Leader @Aeronaut@Awesome

If you had bothered to take off your ignorant glasses and look at the full form of FATA, you would have known that the F in FATA is for Federal.

Secondly no government has taken oath, in centre or FATA.

Talking about the strike itself, I said before as well that nothing will change.
