Air pollution in Beijing reaches hazardous levels

BEIJING: Air pollution readings in China's notoriously polluted capital were at dangerously high levels for the second straight day Saturday, with hazy skies blocking visibility and authorities urging people to stay indoors.

Local officials warned that the severe pollution in Beijing, reportedly the worst since the local government began collecting data a year ago, was likely to continue until Tuesday.

The Beijing Municipal Environmental Monitoring Center said on its website that the density of PM2.5 particulates had reached 700 micrograms per cubic meter in many parts of the city, a level considered extremely hazardous.

By 5pm, the center's real-time reporting showed the air quality indexes at or approaching the maximum 500 from some monitoring stations. The index runs from zero to 500 and accounts for the level of airborne PM 2.5 particulates _ tiny particles considered the most harmful to health.

Generally, the air quality is considered good when the index is at 50 or below, and hazardous with an index between 301 and 500, when people are warned to avoid outdoor physical activities. Those with respiratory problems, the elderly and children are asked to stay indoors.

The air started to turn bad on Thursday, and monitors in Beijing reported air quality indexes above 300 by Friday. The monitoring center said Saturday that the pollution was expected to linger for the next three days and urged residents, especially the most vulnerable, to stay home as much as possible.

The air quality data are the worst in Beijing since the municipal government began to track PM2.5 early last year, said Zhou Rong of the environmental organization Green Peace.

Monitors at the US Embassy in Beijing recorded an off-the-chart air-quality reading of 755 at 8pm Saturday and said the PM2.5 density had reached 886 micrograms per cubic meter. It was unclear whether the embassy's data were the worst since it began collecting and sharing such information in 2008.

Readings are often different in different parts of Beijing. Chinese authorities and the United States also have different ways to calculate the air quality index, although their indexes are ``highly similar'' at the two ends of the spectrum, said Ma Jun, founder of the nongovernmental Institute of Public and Environmental Affairs in Beijing.

Air pollution is a major problem in China due to the country's rapid pace of industrialization, reliance on coal power, explosive growth in car ownership and disregard to environmental laws. It typically gets worse in the winter because of heating needs.

In Beijing, authorities have blamed foggy conditions and a lack of wind for the high concentration of air pollutants.

Several other cities, including Tianjin on the coast east of Beijing and southern China's Wuhan city, also reported severe pollution over the last several days.

No wonder those that can afford to are leaving China for the west

but we do wonder why india can be more polluted than china without any industry. u guys are a wonder.

? the article doesn't even mention India !!!

The key thing is Xinhua and the CPC govt themselves are asking the residents to stay indoors.

... as if some curfew is imposed. things have gone pretty bad, to say the least.

today is indeed very polluted,Beijing is three sides surrounded by the mountain, the city basically is a basin, although Beijing has strict restriction in limiting number of cars,it still has 5 milion cars and in winter the heating also generates a lot of pollution, but the smog will be gone in a couple of days when wind comes.
but some Indians think that China is Beijing, that's very ignorant,China is very big and she has tons of places where blue sky and fresh air all year around,Beijing is just a city in China.

Indians are really in no position to ridicule China when their cities being voted dirtiest in the world.

Mumbai voted world’s dirtiest city
Dec 14, 2012

Washington: India’s commercial capital, Mumbai, has been named among the world’s ‘dirtiest’ cities, ranking last in the ‘cleanest streets’ category, a global survey of 40 key tourist cities has found.

According to TripAdvisor’s Cities Survey, Tokyo grabbed the first place while Mumbai ranked last in the list of ‘cleanest streets’.

Similarly in the category of ‘ease of getting around’, Mumbai ranked at the last position while Zurich stood at first place, the company said in a press release.

The survey revealed the cities with rudest locals, dirtiest streets and worst shopping.

It found that Moscow was home to world’s least-friendly locals. The Russian city ranked last in a number of categories, including ‘friendliest locals’.

Tokyo was the most highly decorated world city, ranking number one for best taxi services, friendliest taxi drivers, best public transportation, cleanest streets and safety.

New York City took out the top spot for shopping, but travellers felt the city’s streets could use a sweep with the Big Apple ranking 28 out of 40 for cleanliness.

“New York City’s global reputation as a shopping mecca was reinforced by the opinions of the TripAdvisor community worldwide,” said Brooke Ferencsik, Director of communications of TripAdvisor.

The survey, completed by more than 75,000 people, looked into how travellers and locals viewed 40 key tourist cities around the world.

And Indian cities air quality is not something which you can brag about.

India tops China in air pollution level increase
Chetan Chauhan, Hindustan Times
New Delhi, November 30, 2012

There's just one area in which India has outrun China - air pollution.

The rise in air pollution levels in Indian megacities between 2002 and 2010 has been much more than Chinese urban centres. It was also the highest among 189 cities analysed by the Tel Aviv University, using
NASA's high-tech aerosol monitoring satellites.

The study, using data from three different satellites, showed that particulate matter - caused by dust and vehicular emissions - increased by more than 10% in most Indian cities whereas the maximum increase of 5 to 10% was witnessed only in northern Chinese cities.

"The increasing aerosol trends over the largest cities in the Indian subcontinent, West Asia, and North China can be clearly seen. By contrast, megacities in Europe, the northeast of US, and South-East Asia show mainly declining trends," said the study, released by the American Journal of Climate Change this week.

Bangalore, the 'Indian Silicon Valley', earned the dubious distinction of witnessing the second-highest increase (34%) in air pollution levels among 189 cities, after Portland in the US.

Other Indian cities that recorded a high increase in air pollution levels were Pune at 27%, Nagpur at 22%, Mumbai at 18%, Bhilai at 17.7%, Surat at 12.5% and Ahmedabad at 12%.

However, the usual culprits - Delhi and Kanpur - recorded just 4.2% and 6.5% increase in particulate matter.

The data captured by satellites hundreds of metres above the ground show a different picture than information gathered through ground monitoring.

Also, high atmospheric aerosol concentration in space modifies cloud properties, leading to less rainfall, and dimming of solar radiation in cities. "Data show that solar radiation over big cities with high population concentration has reduced, causing its own health problems," the study said.
