USAF has declared its Air Force Global Strike Command (AFGSC) fully operational as of October 1, 2010.
For the first time since the Strategic Air COmmand (SAC) was deactivated in 1992, this is the first completely new major command to control all USAF long range nuclear forces, and is headquartered at Barksdale AFB in Louisiana.
At full strength, AFGSC will have 23,000 personnel and will control Minuteman III missiles at FE Warren AFB and Minot AFB in North Dakota, Malmstorm AFB in Montana, as well as B-52s at Barksdale AFB and Minot AFB and B-2s at Whiteman AFB in Missouri.
