British soldiers have taken part in the first major Afghan National Army offensive of the spring.

Operation Shafuq – or Dawn in Pashtu - was a large scale Afghan National Army operation to clear the Bowri Dashte area of Nad’ Ali.

It was conceived, planned and executed by the ANA with on-the-ground advice provided by British soldiers of the Brigade Advisory Group.

As they searched an area known as the ‘Shark’s Fin’ for IEDs, the Afghan Explosive Hazard Reduction Teams detected a device. Major Bev Allen of 1st Battalion The Royal Anglian Regiment moved forward to consult with Colonel Zelgai the commanding officer of 1st Kandak, 3/215 Brigade, on the best way to deal with the device. As it was not a threat to locals it was marked and recorded so locals were aware it was there.

The same patrol later found three explosive devices outside a compound.

Staff Sergeant Steve Limbrick and Corporal Neal Griffiths, from the Airborne Troop of 49 Squadron, 33 Regiment Royal Engineers are responsible for training the Afghan Army bomb disposal operators. They advised Afghan disposal expert Sergeant Gulbudin before he went forward on what is known as the ‘long walk.’ A controlled explosion later destroyed the device.

Over the course of the operation more than 25 square kilometers were cleared and three weapons caches were found, including 10 kilograms of high explosives.

Brigadier Doug Chalmers, Commander Task Force Helmand said: “The insurgency believed that they could operate throughout this area with impunity. The success of this operation clearly demonstrates that they cannot.

“Despite insurgent promises to defeat the ANSF there was hardly a fight, a difference between word and deed noticed by those who live in the district.

“Brigadier Shirin Shah, the men of 3/215 Brigade and the police worked closely to ensure the safety of the local people as they drove the insurgents from the area. Their approach and level of care is in stark contrast to the insurgent who had relied on intimidation to dominate the local population.”
