Provincial police spokesman Sayed Sarwar Hussaini said the center of Kunduz had been completely cleared of militants but that fighting was ongoing to remove remaining fighters from its outskirts.

...

About 500 Afghan army elite special-operations forces advanced on the city from the government-held airport and chased out the Taliban, who retreated largely outside the city.

...

Residents said Afghan troops were walking on the city’s streets and that all major government buildings were once again under government control. They said the roads were strewed with bodies of dead Taliban fighters.

...

Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid confirmed in a phone interview Thursday morning that the group’s forces had evacuated the city, but said the move was made to prevent fighting that could lead to civilian casualties.

Afghan troops are preparing to advance beyond the city to fight the Taliban in other areas of Kunduz province where they have taken territory, officials said.

They said they were confident the provincial districts of Imam Sahib and Chardara, which fell to the Taliban on Wednesday, would be recaptured by evening.
