Activists rally to support Crimean Tatar TV channel in danger of being shut down by Russia

Putin learn a lot from Deng XiaoPing. Be firm with your goal and know what is the best for country. Stop being delusion that the west will really bring great benefit. Gorbachev was tricked by west by softening their believe and embrace the west will bring great benefit to Russia. He was wrong and what Putin do is the best for Russia.

Crimean Tatar media outlets targeted by Russian officials

The EU has condemned as 'a blatant violation of the right to freedom of expression' the closure of the Crimean Tatar ATR TV, following searches of its premises and attacks on its journalists in the past weeks.

"Other Crimean Tatar media outlets have also reportedly been forced to shut down," a statement said, adding this was "part of a wider pattern of persecution and intimidation of the Crimean Tatar community."

EU spokeswoman Maya Kosyanich said the Crimean people deserve unimpeded access to the plurality of media. We call for an immediate reestablishment of ATR's broadcasting rights and full respect for the fundamental rights and freedoms of all inhabitants of Crimea.

ATR went off air on April 1 after a midnight deadline expired for it to register in accordance with Russian law.

According to Amnesty International, ATR channel submitted all the applications and documents needed in advance of the deadline, but did not hear back from the licensing authority.

Crimean Tatar news agency moves to Kyiv| Ukrinform

KYIV, April 2 /Ukrinform/. Crimean Tatar news agency QHA (Qirim Haber Agentligi/Ajansi) has announced that its editorial board moves from Crimea to Kyiv.

According to the statement on the agency's website, this decision has been taken due to the refusal of occupants to allow the agency to work.

"After Crimea's coming under control of the Russian Federation, after registration refusal from Roskomnadzor [Federal Supervision Agency for Information Technologies and Communications], typical for many Crimean Tatar media, the management decided to move the main office to the capital of Ukraine, Kyiv," reads the statement.

The QHA management added that they intended to use all legal mechanisms and opportunities to continue information activity in Crimea.

Russian Shutdown of Crimean Tatar Media

Press Statement

Acting Department Spokesperson, Office of the Spokesperson

We strongly condemn the Russian occupation authorities’ shutdown of many major Crimean Tatar media outlets yesterday, including ATR TV, the last independent television station serving the Crimean Tatar population of Crimea, as well as QHA news agency, the newspaper Avdet, radio station Meydan FM, and several others. These closures are the latest in a string of actions that undermine freedom of expression in Crimea. They follow a year-long crusade to silence the Crimean Tatar population and others who oppose Russia’s occupation. Tatars have been singled out and subjected to a pattern of discrimination, intimidation and persecution, including raids on homes, political organizations, and places of worship.

Those in Crimea deserve better. The United States condemns the failure by Russia to respect the human rights of those who remain in Crimea and its disregard for media freedom, and calls for the immediate reinstatement of all the media outlets that were closed. Crimea remains an integral part of Ukraine, and the United States continues to stand behind Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
