china being a threat is not really a major news for anyone in vietnam. we used to live with it since more 1,000 years after independence. I tend to laugh at remarks in the western press, calling the diverse political camps in vietnam as pro-china, pro-russia or pro-whatever they are called. the basic question or strategy of the camps is how to deal with china? in reality our relationship to the chinese is much complicated and complex. I don´t think the outsiders will ever understand it. so what is vietnam policy toward china? actually only two things:

- first, vietnam is´t china. vietnamese aren´t chinese.
- second, we want peaceful coexistence, equatility and respect.

I think that is not too much demanding. If the chinese begin to consider vietnam as a normal country, let say, like thailand or indonesia, we both will have more fun, less confrontation. forget phrases as big or small brother/sister or worse vassal or former province. not really helpful.
