Chengdu Panda Base has been around since the 80s to help with the rescue and treatment of ill giant pandas.
The base has helped with the continuation of the species by performing artificial insemination. The reason for this is that female pandas ovulate only once a year, so there are not more than 2 – 3 days that she is able to conceive. If we allow for nature to take its course, the late timeframe may result in their extinction. As a result, captive breeding is necessary to sustain the endangered animal.
Through WWF, it is estimated that the number of giant pandas in the wild are 1,600. It appears that the panda population shows no signs of declining, and that is relieving news.
