Mass-scale deforestation is taking place in in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit-Baltistan. Their respective governments seem to have surrendered to the timber mafia that has reduced the forest cover of the country from 18 percent to only 2.5 percent, thus increasing several risks including landslides, flash floods and threatening wildlife habitat and glaciers.

The total silence of the authorities on such a huge national loss is beyond understanding. While travelling on the Karakoram Highway you only see thousands and thousands of trees logged by the roadside. The terrible view of this massacre starts from the Kohistan district of KP and continues up to the end of the Diamer distict in Gilgit-Baltistan. Forests that were visible only a couple of years back have vanished. The same is the case in the Kaghan, Naran and Babusar valleys that were once famous for their thick forests. Deforestation has increased after the devolution of power. Pakistan is 12th among those nations that are negatively affected by global climate change.

I request the powers-that-be to instantly place a total ban on cutting the last standing trees in these areas.
