In a breakthrough, an Indian-American rocket scientist has invented a mini electricity device, which could replace expensive power houses and transmission lines.

Christened the ‘Bloom Box,’ it would be unveiled by K.R. Sridhar in the Silicon Valley, a preview of which was given at the CBS’s popular show ‘60 Minutes’ last weekend.

“It is just like a laptop of the power sector,” the CBS reported.

Mr. Sridhar formed a company, Bloom Energy, which raised some $400 million from venture capitalists of the Silicon Valley at a time when it is tough to get money due to economic recession.

Among its board of directors is the former U.S. Secretary of State Collin Powell, who joined it last year.

Mr. Sridhar, who was a rocket scientist and served as adviser to NASA, says that in 10 years or so the ‘Bloom Box’ for residential areas would be available at $3,000 (less than Rs.1.5 lakh) to produce electricity in a small home round the clock.

Having earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Madras, earlier he was a Professor of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering as well as Director of the Space Technologies Laboratory (STL) at the University of Arizona.

If it can power up a house then am sure it can power up an automobile and future UAVs. How about having a UAV equipped with this stuff flying non-stop across the globe multiple times. sure seems promising to me.:woot:

yeah yeah, another $50 "free""computer" and $ 1000 "free" "auto" alike Hindu scam

we have here.

..."raised $400 million..." , big deal? Your $1000 "auto" raised much more,

didn't it?

"Magic blue and black ink...". , wow, is that something also coming

from your holly cow?

If it were not based on some dubious technologies as it most

likely to be, it would have raised $400 billion with a flip of finger

and be valued much more than what Google and Royal Dutch Shell put

together, with its founder's photo on the front page of every each newspaper

under the sun by now, since "free'" and clean energy is a multi-trillion dollar

business in the long run !

Indians... :disagree:

You are a disgrace to not just this form but the whole scientific community. Dont bother, every invention in this world is being scrutinized by other scientists before bringing it into commercially viable product. Even Einstein struggled to get acceptance for more than a year to get his E=mc^2 accepted by world community.

And for your $1000 auto, its already in production and a European version is also being developed with EU emissions standard.

I didnt know about the $50 computer, so let me not comment on something i dont know.

The way you worded in your post shows how much respect you give to inventions and fellow humans. Please be off if you cannot contribute and allow this thread to spread knowledge. already two posts with some meaningful info from Pakistani and an Indian had posted. kudos to them. Thats the way to go.

Siva,

Why are you so concerned about what speeder said ? Think. For a chinese.. Invention or making something new is forbidden... let this bloom box go into production , the first country that might attempt a copy paste is yours truly China.... So chill for some people or country Xerox copier is the ultimate invention mankind has ever made (even bigger than fire) ....:cheers:
Speeder will only understand the concept once it goes into production.

DONT WORRY TOO MUCH,I AM SURE WHEN THE ENGINE GOES FOR MASS PRODUCTION,THE CEO WOULD CONSIDER SETTING UP ONE PLANT IN CHINA TOO,U SEE THE CHINESE SLAVES ARE THE CHEAPEST IN THE WORLD.

This is a technology discussion and why are people bringing nonsense??/

Future bombs for terrorists - Cheap and easy

why bring terrorist to the discussion... show some maturity...

You are a moron!

Did Einstein sell E=mc^2 in some "box" with some "magical ink"

to every household for commercial profits as you Indian morons do ???

A pure scam, a shame for scientific community!

Not every inventions are the same. Some can be used for commecial

money-making purposes form the start, while some NO!

The absolute vaccine and cure for cancer and AIDS, invention

and discovery of fusion for free energy, for example, are for

mankind's general benefits at large and should be given to

the world community for free without a second thought being a

scientist, while the inventors should be given Nobel Prizes in return

for their scientific contribution to the mankind, as how it has been done in history.

Anything other than that, as this dodgy story goes, is deemed

as a shame in eyes of science, unless of course it is a commercial

scam ( as it may well be) to start with.

It uses Natural Gas to create electricity so unless you are going to use a long long very long pipe to UAV its not going to work.

Not taking away credit from where its due congradulation to him for Vey intelligent Invention

for what? gas can be compressed.

he's talking about continues gas flow from the long underground pipe that this generator is using.

UAV lol :cheesy:

It's still a fuel cell, though very clean and super efficient.. But it'll still require fossil fuel... I would have been more happy if something could have eliminated the use of fossil fuel completely...

Nevertheless, a breakthrough technology and if it can really be put to work is a huge blessing to reduce the green house gas emission if it can replace the conventional Thermal power station and Gas turbines.

What will happen to the use of coal for power generation? May be Coal Liquification can be taken up to produce liquid fuels from coal..
