NEW DELHI, Aug 10 – Over 80,000 Bangladeshi nationals who entered the country with valid documents have disappeared during the last three years in India.

On a day when the debate over illegal infiltration rocked the Parliament, the Home Ministry admitted in Rajya Sabha that 82585 Bangladeshi nationals, with valid travel documents have gone missing in India.

Last year some 21274 Bangladeshi nationals disappeared without a trace. The highest number of 32,644 Bangladeshis had gone traceless in 2009, though the figure came down to 28,667 the next year.

According to Home Ministry’s record, 67,945 foreign nationals hailing from different countries have disappeared in India, but the highest number belongs to Bangladesh followed by nationals of Afghanistan.

As entry of illegal migrants into the country, without valid travel documents is clandestine and surreptitious, it is not possible to have any data of such illegal migrants, including those from Bangladesh and Afghanistan, missing in India, said Minister of State for Home Affairs, M Ramachandran.

The law enforcement agencies maintain a strict vigil on the activities of foreigners including those from Bangladesh and Afghanistan, he said.

A revised procedure for detection and deportation of illegal Bangladeshi immigrants was communicated to the State Government in November 2009, which was partially modified in February, last year.

The procedure includes sending back then and there, the illegal migrants, who are intercepted at the border, while entering India unauthorisedly, said the Minister.

NEW DELHI, Aug 10 – Amid continuing violence in Assam, the Centre has told the Supreme Court that it would not be possible to delete names of 40 lakh doubtful voters from the State on the basis of their religious or linguistic profile as it would be unconstitutional, reports PTI.

The Centre rejected the allegation of NGO Assam Public Works that over 40 lakh illegal migrants from Bangladesh had got their names entered in the electoral rolls and they should forthwith be deported.

In an affidavit placed before a bench of justices P Sathasivam and Ranjan Gogoi on Thursday, the Centre, however, assured the court that it was committed to weed out illegal migrants from the State.

The apex court, while taking on record the affidavit, posted the matter for further hearing to November 6.

The Centre said as a matter of policy it does not support any kind of illegal migration either into its territory or illegal immigration of its citizens to foreign territories.

“Curbing illegal migration into the country is a priority since it has serious security, economic and societal ramifications,” it said.

The government said it has been issuing instructions from time to time to all States and Union territories on the need to detect and deport Bangladeshi nationals found to be staying in India.

“Identification of persons with doubtful Indian nationality in the electoral rolls began with the intensive revision of electoral rolls in 1997-persons who could not provide evidence in favour of their Indian nationality at the time of verification were marked as “D” in the electoral rolls so as to indicate their doubtful/disputed nationality status and these cases were referred to the competent tribunal for determination of their nationality.

“Such D voters are neither allowed to contest elections nor cast votes during elections. The electoral rolls figures from 2005 are accurate and authentic.

“Any so called abnormal growth, in the electoral rolls does not imply that the rolls contain the names of illegal Bangladeshi immigrants and the contention made regarding presence of illegal Bangladesh migrants in the electoral rolls is completely presumptuous,” the Centre claimed.

According to the government, to curb illegal infiltration it has strengthened the BSF equipping it with modern and sophisticated equipment/gadgets; raising of additional battalions, intensified patrolling and taken up other measures.

It said 36 foreigners tribunals have been set up to detect, declare and deport foreign nationals who have illegally infiltrated into Assam after the cut-off date of March 24, 1971.

“The government is committed to the detection and deportation of illegal migrants of post March 24, 1971 in conformity with the provisions of the Foreigners Act, 1946 and Foreigners Tribunal Order 1964 through the 36 foreigners tribunals,”it said.

Our Spl Correspondent adds: A Writ Petition filed by Assam Public Works on February 22 in the apex court has alleged that the voters list of Assam is infested with foreigners and as a result in the 2011 election, 18 seats were won by AIUDF, which favoured Bangladeshi foreigners and are likely to win 8-20 additional seats in the next elections, as the 2011 election trend suggests, unless the voters list is corrected before the next election.

The APW has pleaded for a direction to the Government of Assam and Government of India to undertake the update work of NRC only after the completion of certain prerequisites.

Since Independence the Congress has only brought miseries to the country..We need to have a credible alternative to it. BJP seems to be losing the plot.

I hope India completely ban Bangladeshi Visa. Only retarded wants to visit India and should not be allowed at all.

On topic: India has a weird rule that a person entered through a certain port of entry should leave with the same and if not then his departure record is missing. Some people do it otherwise and come back without reporting to the authority at all when they have to leave through a different route.

In Bangladesh, you can come through any point and leave through any point and all the immigration computers are centrally connected and reported.

No they will never speak like an Indian bengali (few may , but majority will not). The probklem is that most of the North Indian and other Indians who do not understand bengali, is unable to differentiate between a Bangladeshi and an Indian Bengali on the basis of language and accent..thus they are able to survivie..thats why you will find the majority of the BD illelgal immigrants in North India like Delhi, haryana, Noida and even in Punjab...and the major similarity between all of them is that they al work as labourers on the construction sites, watchman, rickshaw pullers and domesctic helps. Heck I even found few in my village.

if the North Indians become aware they wil easily be able to identify them...infact indian bengalis are 99% of them literate and do not work as labourers..evne if they have to, they would do so in Bengal itself and not in Other pats where no one speaks bengali.

So what is so wrong with having them around?

Its not like their are an alien culture. Its not like Black Africans, Chinese or Arabs or Mexicans are moving into India. These Bangladeshis used to be Indians only 65 years ago. How are they a national security threat?

I am not really knowledgeable on Illegal Bangladeshi problem in India. So do these Bangladeshis commit crimes, form gangs, deal drugs, or what?
