I saw these Chinese Haiti peacekeepers in CCTV 7 just a month ago. But I'm afraid I can't see some of them forever! They are heros.

Motherland "salutes you", awaits "your safe return" - People's Daily Online

A magnitude-7.3 earthquake that jolted Haiti late Tuesday has caused a great loss of human lives and severe property damage, and eight Chinese peacekeepers were buried in debris of a collapsed building. The sad, heartbroken news has filled people at home with gnawing grief and worries.

Soon after the occurrence of the catastrophic quake in Haiti, Chinese leaders issued instructions to help rescue quake victims and to provide the Caribbean nation with humanitarian aid. China's anti-riot squad stationed in Haiti rushed to the disaster area in the "prime time" to carry out rescue operations. And China's international rescue team, comprising 50 rescuers and seven reporters, arrived in the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince by a charted plane earlier Thursday.

"For the sake of that pair of kid's lovely eyes, we are wearing blue helmets, converge onto the earth's remotest corners, where there are neither bars and other recreational facilities in downtown areas, nor 'any music, chess playing, calligraphy and painting'" … but "we have to eat in the wind and sleep in the dew"… "For the protection of human lives, kids and their laughter, we are marching toward peace". This is a theme song of the TV Play "Chinese Peacekeeping Police", a true and very vivid portrayal of China's "Blue Helmets".

The blue helmet is the identification of Chinese peacekeepers; peace is their lofty dream; sweat, blood and even their precious life are the cost they have to pay. In order to help other nations attain lasting peace, they bid farewell to their motherland and love ones, they enter areas of conflicts in harsh conditions filled with an air of gunpowder.

Despite the reforms, the United Nations' peacekeeping operation continues to face challenges, including increased missions to manage worldwide… UN missions have reached an "unprecedented scale, complexity and risk level" today, acknowledged U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in his report on the work of the UN.

Haiti is generally known as one of the most dangerous task areas for U.N. peacekeeping missions. China's first anti-riot force for peacekeeping arrived in the Port-au-Prince in October 2004. At present, there are a total of 142 Chinese peacekeepers stationing in Haiti, including a 125-member Chinese anti-riot police force and 17 peacekeeping policemen.

Tough conditions and very risky environment in Haiti pose severe tests for every UN peacekeeper. In face of difficulties and perils, the Chinese peacekeeping police show a strong sense of the mission and responsibilities. While working assiduously and diligently to fulfill their mission with flying colors, they also seek amity among local people and befriend them.

Since the first batch of peacekeepers from China were first sent to East Timor in January 2000, the country has so far dispatched 1,569 members to seven task areas, namely, the East Timor, Afghanistan, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Kosovo, Liberia, Sudan and Haiti. In addition, the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) has sent a total of 14,670 men and officers to participate in 18 U.N. peacekeeping operations globally by the end of 2009. During these operations, three Chinese military observers and five soldiers laid down their lives.

At present, China's 1,958 officers and men are working respectively in the U.N. Department of Peacekeeping Operations and nine global task areas. China is currently the Permanent Security member nation to send more troops for the mission than other members of the UN Security Council. So, Alain Le Roy, U.N. Under-Secretary for Peacekeeping Operations, has cited China's expanding engagement in UN peacekeeping as a "key factor" with a crucial capacity.

Chinese peacekeepers have won the glory for the motherland with their own strenuous efforts and brought the long-aspired peace to people in their task areas and imbue them with high expectations for the future.

People in China salute "Blue Helmets", who are the genuine guardians of world peace and envoys of friendship, and the motherland solutes them and awaits their safe, triumphant return after the accomplishment of their glorious mission.

I was just fearing this. We must regard the 18 unlucky Chinese peace keepers as martyrs.

It is very sad. A national sorrow.

Our enemies must be feeling happy now. But to our enemies, our message is that China is a big nation, China can afford the martyrdom of 18 people. :china:

I dont think anyone in their right minds (no matter what nationality) will be happy about this at all.. grow up dude..There are somethings that go beyond national rivalries

My deepest sorrow for Poeple of Haiti. It reminds me of the 5.12 big earthquake in 2008 in China. My highest respect for the 18 Chinese peacekeepers. They are the most deciplined peacekeeping troops around the world.

UNITED NATIONS, Jan. 15 (Xinhua) -- China said here Friday that the Chinese government will positively respond to the flash appeal of the United Nations and "do what it can" to aid the government and people of Haiti, devastated by a strong earthquake on Tuesday.

Liu Zhenmin, the deputy Chinese permanent representative to the UN, told a UN flash appeal meeting to raise funds for Haiti that "the Chinese government will closely follow the developments of the disaster in Haiti, and positively respond to the flash appeal of the United Nations."

"China will do what it can to provide assistance and contribute to the efforts of the Haitian people to triumph over the disaster and rebuild their homes at an early date," Liu said.

Liu said China reacted immediately after the earthquake. Right after the quake on Tuesday, Chinese President Hu Jintao and Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao instructed the Chinese departments concerned to make speedy preparations for the relief efforts in Haiti. Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi sent a message of condolences to his Haitian counterpart Alrich Nicolas.

On Wednesday, China sent a 60-member rescue team to Haiti, which started disaster relief immediately after its arrival, he said.

Following the 1-million-U.S.-dollar donation by the Red Cross Society of China, the Chinese government announced that it will provide 30 million yuan (some 4.4 million U.S. dollars) worth of humanitarian emergency supplies to Haiti.

The two charter planes loaded with the first batch of 90 tons of supplies, including medicine, tents, portable emergency lights, water purification equipment, food, drinking water and clothes, will depart for Haiti on Saturday, said Liu.

In addition, the Chinese peacekeeping police working for the UN Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH) are also fully engaged in the relief efforts on the ground, he said.

The United Nations and its partners Friday appealed for 562 million U.S. dollars to help the victims of the deadly earthquake in Haiti, as the world body scales up its assistance in the wake of the disaster.

The 562 million U.S. dollars is intended to assist an estimated3 million affected people over a period of six months, with half of the funds being earmarked for emergency food aid, with the rest targeted at health, water, sanitation, nutrition, early recovery, emergency education and other key needs. The UN Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) has allocated 25 million U.S. dollars towards the appeal.
