Introduction:

At the time of the battle, Arabia was sparsely populated by a number of Arabic-speaking peoples

Some were Bedouin, pastoral nomads organized in tribes; some were agriculturalists living either in oases in the north or in the more fertile and thickly settled areas to the south (now Yemen and Oman). The majority of Arabs were adherents of numerous polytheistic religions. The battle of Badr however was the first large-scale engagement between the two forces

Prophet Muhammad (p.b.u.h)

Muhammad was born in Mecca around 570 C.E. into the Banū Hāshim clan of the Quraish tribe. When he was about forty years old, he is said to have experienced a divine revelation by Arch Angel Gabriel while he was meditating in a cave outside Mecca. He began to preach to his kin folk first privately and then publicly about oneness of God and Stopping them to worship the Idols

Response to his preaching both attracted followers and antagonized others. During this period Muhammad was protected by his uncle. When his uncle died in 619, the leadership of the Banū Hāshim passed to one of Muhammad's enemies, Amr ibn Hishām, who withdrew the protection and stepped up persecution of the Muslim community

In 622, with open acts of violence being committed against the Muslims by their own fellow Quraishi - Pagans tribesmen , Muhammad and many of his followers fled to the neighbouring City of Medina. This migration is called the Hijra and marked the beginning of Muhammad's reign as both a political as well as a religious leader

Reasons of the Battle of Badr:
Makkan tribe (Quraysh)

The emigration of the Holy Prophet Muhammad Pbuh ( sal-lal-lahu alai hi wa sallam) to Medina had turned the enemies from Mecca (Makkah) more hostile, and they constantly kept on thinking how they could overthrow him, and put an end to Islam

The Meccans and their allies started to bring their raids to the very outskirts of Medina, destroying the fruit trees of the Muslims and carrying away their flocks, not only they seize all Properties and Homes of Muslims in Mecca; who migrated to Medina to escape the but also start to persecute people who supported Muslims in Mecca and surroundings

Quraysh tribe had always been very unfriendly towards the prophet, popularity of Islam intimated them and started considering Muslims as a serious threat. Quraysh tried to join hands with Jews, hypocrites even people who lived between Makkah and Madina to stand against Muslims, Due to there ill behavior Prophet and his companions had to migrate towards madina

Allah permission to fight:

Allah revealed verses of the Quran giving permission to the Muslims to fight the disbelievers. Now the Muslims had the support of the Ansaar (People from Medina, Who converted to Islam), they had a place where Islam prevailed and where they could retreat. It was an appropriate time for Jihad

After the extreme and prolong attitude of Makkans, Message revealed by Arch Angel Gabriel to Prophet Muhammad Pbuh that Allah (Lord of Heavens & Earth) allow his prophet to retaliate but in self defence, because Islam seeks Peace
"Permission to fight is given to those (i.e. believers against those disbelievers), who are fighting them, (and) because they (believers) havebeen wronged, and surely Allah is Able to give them (believers) Victory." [(22: 39)]

  • The policy of deterrence or preventing something to happen
  • The state of war was between two cities (Mecca & Madina)
  • The main strength of Quraysh was their trade, so Prophet of Allah directed his companions to attack caravans passing through route of madina to bring an economic pressure on the tribe
  • .Among one of the raids by muslims Amr Bin Hadrami was killed a guard of the caravanwhich gave an excuse to Makkans to revolt against muslims
  • On an other occasion caravan of Abu Sufyaan was tobe attack ,one of the worst enemy of islam, the intentions were to use this event as a bait to bring Makkans to battle
  • .Abu Suffayan sends a call for help to Mecca.
  • On early realization Abu Suffyah changed course.
  • As soon as Abu Sufyaan got his caravan safely away from the Muslims, he sent another message to Makkah that they were safe and no longer required assistance.
  • But it was to late.Abu Jahl was looking for an excuse to attack the Muslims.
  • He had been making preparations for almost a year,
  • He marched towards Madinah with an army of 1,000 fighters plus 300 Supporters, Dancers, cooks, Slaves & Helpers,700 camels and 300 horses.Abu Jahls men were well trained and well armed with spears, swords, bows and arrows, and shields.ABU JAHL
  • On hearing the news that the Kuffaar of Makkah had left with 1000 men to destroy the Muslims, Rasul Allah (Messenger of Allah) made consultation with the Sahaba (Muslim Companions) at Masji-e-Nabwi in Madinah.Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddique (R.A.), Hazrat Umar (R.A.) from Muhajireen and Hazrat Saad bin Muaz from the Ansaar and the rest of the Muslims showed their willingness and desire to defend Islam against falsehood.
  • When Rasul -Allah was satisfied with the decision, he began preparations for the defence of Islam.
  • Rasul Allah (Prophet Muhammad Pbuh) left Madinah with 313 men including some teenage boys
  • They only had: 3 horses, 70 camels and a few swords
  • When they reached BADR, which was a mountainous region,Rasulullah made dua to Allah and pleaded
  • O Allah! should this small group of believers perish this day, then No one will be left on earth to worship you and carry your message to the rest of Humanity - Dua (Prayer) of Prophet Muhammad Peace be upon him
The Battle of Badr Starts

The battle of Badr was the most important among the Islamic battles of Destiny. For the first time the followers of the new faith were put into a serious test. Had victory been the lot of the pagan army while the Islamic Forces were still at the beginning of their developments, the faith of Islam could have come to an end.

No one was aware of the importance of the outcome of the Battle as the Prophet (S) himself. We might read the depth of his anxiety in his prayer before the beginning of the Battle when he stood up supplicating his Lord :

``God this is Quraish. It has come with all its arrogance and boastfulness, trying to discredit Thy Apostle. God, I ask Thee to humiliate them tomorrow. God, if this Muslim band will perish today, Thou shall not be worshipped``

At this battle in which the pagan army consisted of 1,000 fighters plus 300 Supporters, Dancers, Slaves & Helpers versus 313 believers
The Islamic defence was a combination of three defensive lines :

1. The personality of the Messenger, his leadership and his unequalled firmness. He (S) was to the Muslims the final refuge at Badr and at every battle he attended.

2. The Hashmites (the clan of the Prophet S), led by Ali Ibn Abu Talib (as)who entered this battle relatively obscure and came out with unequalled military fame. His military performances became the popular subject of the Arab caravans conversations throughout the Arabic Peninsula

3. The hundreds of companions of the Messenger whose hearts were filled with the faith and readiness for sacrifice. Many of them viewed martyrdom to be a gain, equal to life and victory. These good companions were the army of Islam, its first line of defense and thick wall behind which the Messenger (S) used to stand. They were the attackers and the defenders.

As to the clan of the Messenger they were the ones that he used to call before any one else, to offer the heavy sacrifice. They used to stand in the first line of defense opening for the army the way through their thrusts in the line of the enemies. When the general offensives began and every companion participated, the clan of the Messenger (S) were the most damaging to the enemies. They were so at Badr and at the following battles.

The battle began when Utbah Ibn Rabi-ah, his son Al Walid and his brother Sheibah (all from the Ommayad) stood in front of the pagan army and asked the Prophet (S) to send to them their equals for a dual. Hundreds of companions were around him and many of them were expecting to be called upon by the Prophet (S) but he choose to start from his own family.

The load was heavy and the heavy load could be carried only by the people to whom it belonged as he called upon Ali, Al Hamza and Obeidah Al Harith (all from the clan of the Prophet) to face the three warriors. Ali destroyed Al Walid and Al Hamza killed Utbah; then they both assisted Obaidah against his opponent Sheibah. Sheibah died immediately and Obeidah was the first martyr at this battle. He died after he lost his leg.

When the general offensive began, hundreds of companions participated in the battle and offered sacrifices and pleased their Lord. But the members of the house of the Messenger (S) distinguished themselves. Ali's endeavour was unique at this battle. When Hanth ala Ibn Abu Sufyan faced him, Ali liquefied his eyes with one blow from his sword. He annihilated Al Auss Ibn Saeed, and met Tuaima Ibn Oday and transfixed him with his spear, saying “You shall not dispute with us in God after today.”

The Messenger (S) took a handful of gravel when the battle was extremely heated. He threw it at the faces of the pagans saying “ May Your faces be disfigured. God, terrify their hearts and invalidated their feet. “ The pagans ran away, turning their faces to no one.

The Muslims went on killing them and taking prisoners. 70 pagans met their death, and the Muslims took from them 70 prisoners

This battle laid the foundation of the Islamic State and made out of the Muslims a force to be reckoned with by the dwellers of the Arabic Peninsula

Working together: Pakistan, Russia vow to support Afghan peace initiative.
MOSCOW: Pakistan and Russia on Wednesday reaffirmed their commitment and support to promote stability and peace in Afghanistan for ‘Afghan-led and Afghan-owned’ efforts for national reconciliation in the country.

During an official visit of Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar to Russia from February 7 to 9, at the invitation of her Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov, the two sides expressed deep concerns about the threat of terrorism and drug-related crimes persisting in the region. Khar added that Pakistan had a clear policy to support any Afghan-driven peace initiative.

Khar, on behalf of President Zardari, invited the Russian president to attend the next quadrilateral summit meeting, which is scheduled to be held in Islamabad this year.

According to the foreign office, the two sides held in-depth discussions on a range of bilateral matters, as well as on important regional and international issues of mutual interest.

The two ministers reviewed the progress made on the understanding reached between the leadership of the two countries during President Asif Ali Zardari’s official visit to Moscow in May 2011 and Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani’s meeting with his Russian counterpart on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation’s (SCO) Heads of Government meeting in November last year.

Taking note of the considerable progress made, both countries agreed that a large potential for enhancing bilateral cooperation still existed, particularly in trade, investment, energy and agriculture.

They also expressed satisfaction on the outcome of the meeting of the Joint Working Group on Energy Cooperation held in Moscow last year. The two sides discussed several concrete proposals including oil exploration, hydropower production/distribution and coal-based power generation projects.

Pakistan welcomed Russia’s willingness to participate in trans-regional energy projects namely, TAPI and CASA-1000. Pakistan also welcomed Russian interest in Thar coal exploration.

The ministers noted with satisfaction that substantial progress has been made towards finalising the proposed memorandum of understanding (MoU) on Expansion and Modernisation of Pakistan Steel Mills, and hoped that other formalities, including financing of the project, will be finalised soon.
