What's new

2017 Census: Population by city Karachi 14.9m, Lahore 11.12m, Faisalabad 3.2m

Sindh urban population now is 52%, up from 48%. Lahore has grown because of dozens housing societies being build all over and its keep expanding. Rural to urban migration from nearby regions basically otherwise punjab population have come down from 55.62% to 52.95%. In my life never seen anyone saying lets go and settle in Karachi, its always Islamabad or Lahore. People in interior sindh are not that rich to buy houses in Karachi.

But still 60% increase for Karachi is quite a lot and in line with other cities apart from Lahore and Islamabad. Even FATA MNA's were hyping their population to be 10 or even 15m which never made any sense.
Lolzzz ... kabhi ao na Karachi ... suhrab goath that was once considered as end of karachi probably a decade ago now has more than 30 kms between sihrab goth and bahria town ... all of the areas n between are getting inhabbitated quickly ... you know if i travel from one part of karachi to another it will take 3 hours almost

You know which areas are considered rural Karachi and urban Karachi? Maybe rural areas outskirts of Karachi have seen population explosion like one in Islamabad.

There is nothing such thing as rural karachi ... its rural and urban sindh ...

So you are saying that bahria town and dha are not part of karachi and are part of urban sindh ? It must be a big shock to trillion of rupees investment by people ...

Karachi target killings and insurgency have reduced migration rate and many people have moved out. Was watching program on Neo news on census. PBS will present proof of every mohala and gali population. It will not be hard to verify with help of Nadra.

Full report is many months away and especially district level data. But early results shows Sindh urban population is 25m, bit higher then rural 23m.

Especially in figure like 27m urdu speaker population at must will be 9m. Now people who say urdu speakers are not single biggest ethnicity in Karachi anymore because of migrations are fooling themselves. When that happen whole political landscape of Karachi will be changed, but not right now.

From where are you getting this false information ?

From where are you getting this false information ?

Common sense because final and detailed census is months away. Are you telling me urdu speakers now make 25% of Karachi population from 48% in 98? Because thats what is the case if we believe in 25 or 30m number, yeah right..... PBS will present proof with forms etc and if challenged then they can be verified with Nadra. Don't forget army was also counting in separate farm along with local census teams.

If figures don't make sense for particular mohala or district then further census verification will be held with help of Nadra/CNIC. This isn't 1998 anymore. In Kohistan they are already doing it because population increase showed 7 times growth and its rural and poorest district of in Hazara divison of KP. Same can be done in other areas. Rural districts can't inflate numbers either.

Common sense says target killings, insurgency have only reduced rate of migration and many going out of Karachi is also a fact. If Karachi security situation keep improving then once again Karachi can expect to see more migration like it happened in 70's.

PBS to verify Kohistan’s ‘inflated’ census figures

PESHAWAR: The Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) will conduct the verification of census data in Kohistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa after receiving astonishingly high figure of population of the mountainous region.

Official sources told Dawn that the provisional figures of the 2017 population census showed that Kohistan had a population of 2.6 million against that of 472,570 reported in the 1998 census and thus, making it the second most populated district of KP after Peshawar.

According to the unofficial report, the estimated population of Peshawar will be around 4.5 million against 2,019,118 in the 1998 census report. The population growth rate was 3.56 per cent, while Kohistan had 0.9 per cent in the 1998 census report.

“This is unbelievable. The provisional figures seem to be highly exaggerated,” an official said.

Latest census puts region’s population at 2.6m against 472,570 found in 1998

He said it had been decided to verify Kohistan’s census figures and that the same exercise was being conducted in Turbat district of Balochistan.

“Turbat has the same case. The PBS will start verification process there, too,” he said.

The sources said the PBS recently ordered the verification of census data in Kohistan and the process was likely to begin in the next few days.

They said the bureau had formed teams to visit the area for the purpose.

The sources said the teams would proceed to Kohistan after getting security clearance from the quarters concerned.

“Our staff members are waiting for security clearance,” said an official.

He said enumerators would verify computerised national identity cards to check population figures appeared in the census report.

The countrywide population census began on April 15 and ended on May 25. Around 200,000 troops were engaged for the exercise.

Only few pockets were not covered in Fata due to the delicate security situation. The process was conducted in two phases.

The officials said the coding and editing of census data, both head count and houses, had almost been completed, while the report would be put up to the Council of Common Interest for approval.

The KP government recently divided Kohistan into upper, lower and central Kohistan districts. With 7,492 square kilometers area, Kohistan is considered to be among the most underdeveloped districts of KP.

The social indicators of the area are very poor. The literacy rate was just 11.1 per cent there according to the 1988 census report.

Polygamy is very common among Kohistanis, who are conservative by and large.

The local population was 465,237 in 1981 census report and 472,570 in the 1998 census figures showing slight increase in the density of the population.

The officials said Kohistan’s population data remained controversial in the past as the people gave wrong information about the size of their families.

“The bureau had to verify population census figures in 1981 and 1998, too,” said another official dealing with the matter.

He said Kohistan had tribal society and that tribes had disputes.

“They (Kohistanis) intentionally gave enumerators false figures to dominate the rival tribes, particularly in Palas and Pattan tehsils. We suspect that a single family has been shown at three different places and thus, producing highly exaggerated population figures,” he said.

The officials said the provision of false information to census staff was a crime and the relevant law suggested penalties.

Section 13(3) of the Census Ordinance, 1959, states, “If any person intentionally gives false answers to, or refuse to answer to the best of his knowledge or belief, the questionnaire or other relevant question asked of him by a census officer which he is legally bound to answer, he shall be punishable with (imprisonment for a term which may extend to six months or) with fine which may extend to Rs15,000 (or with both).”

growth rate of Rural Sindh is 2.36% where migration is not a big contributor

And rural punjab is 1.81% and on top of that we know Sindh officials are legendary at giving wrong census numbers, everyone remember that 2011 housing census? PBS better have full proof available if needed like they claim, to verify with Nadra before final report. Now it also not hard to verify rural areas housing units with sat images. Just pick some village cross check with official numbers. Pakistan need to develop system like in developed countries to keep track of population from birth till they die and where they live. Even something like CNIC only is possible to get after 18 years of age.

I do agree with you that no one is migrating to interior Sindh and must likely some people are migrating out of interior Sindh. In case of KP and Balochistan rural growth has to do with naturalisation of afghans to some extent but thats separate topic.

Anyway the only numbers that matter is overall and that of provinces, what cities with in province less so. But Karachi case is bit different for political reasons.

You know which areas are considered rural Karachi and urban Karachi? Maybe rural areas outskirts of Karachi have seen population explosion like one in Islamabad.

On tribune now they have written whole Karachi division population which is 16.05m, was 9.8m in 1998. Lahore population was 6.3m of which 82% urban, now they have converted whole district in to urban area.

2017
11m vs 16m= Lahore population increase by 74% vs Karachi 62%

Honestly this is non-issue, they just converted whole Lahore district in to urban but stupid tribune who I don't know from where are getting numbers didn't point that out before calculating 116% increase for Lahore city. The only issue here is if interior Sindh population is being inflated or not.

You are applying common sense to a place which you have not een seen ... Its like I start commenting on Washington's population ...

You are requested to visit Karachi first before talking ... Area wise Karachi is much more bigger and density wise its humongous ,,, most of the areas are now based on flat systems and even in houses you will rarely found single story ... It is really unbelivable that difference between lahore and Karachi's population is around 30% ...

You should not comment on the topic of which you know about nothing ... first visit Karachi ,,, have a detailed survey,,, and then you can speak ...

I live in Karachi and have visited Lahore not seen diversity in Lahore, where in Karachi you will still find people coming from all over the country and region for Jobs. I dont get the point of this 14 million population of Karachi even UN estimates Karachi population above 20 million. Only people live in Karachi can observe it and FYI being visited Lahore and Karachi both IMHO Lahore is still not that lucrative market for Job seekers compare to Karachi even my Lahori friends says the same.
