ARM isn't comparable to Intel, they sell their designs to any of their licensees, including Intel. Intel in comparison, is a virtual monopoly in desktops , servers, HPC et al. Where do you think China can start - MIPS, Open Power or Zhaoxin? None of them are comparable to highly complex designs...
Not entirely, as I said there's not much room at the top. There's also not too many steps to go from designing chips to making them. Right now they're trying their hand at DRAM & display panels, both of which are relatively low margin but high volume as compared to complex chips.
It's not, they're just buying things up like Foxconn wrt Sharp. The problem in IC & semiconductors is that there's a ton of patents that you can't work around, even if you do these things are too complex for others to copy. Like a modern Intel x86 chip or ARM, for mobiles. There's just no way...
You're making it sound as if China has developed anything on their own, everything is either developed in the West or SK & Japan, the rest being stolen tech. China is just a mega contract manufacturer, everything else they have is hot air.
Yeah we shall see, but since China itself has decided to move up the food chain wouldn't you say that they're looking to ditch low cost manufacturing?
You don't have to answer that, just food for thought.
A lot of the blame can also be attributed to to the economies of scale, in manufacturing, that isn't there yet. You're deluding yourself if you think automating production is more efficient than anything done uniquely in China. The main reason why the likes of Hon Hai haven't replaced a vast...
And as I've said, like many others, an overnight & blanket ban is simply impossible for any nation be it India, China or US. However for the vast majority, like 90% or even more, India can easily replace China for goods manufactured using western tech & we know the vast majority of Indian...
And they got bitch slapped at the WTO for pulling that crap, yeah wanna try that again o_O

Powered by Intel processors (not made in China) using Micron DRAM (again not made in China) with a Samsung display (assembled in China?) also Seagate storage (from a Thai factory) & Seasonic PSU (using nichicon Japanese capacitors) :o:
Now go back to sleep, it's already too late in the night...
Well I wouldn't say that is true but for that politicians on both sides must be honest & I'm afraid that is not the case atm & I do not foresee the polity, either side of the border, changing in our lifetime.
You think we haven't tried that, hint - we haven't, & then the Chinese drum up their support for free trade (FTA) & bringing down trade barriers when in fact they are the biggest abuser of such systems. Not to mention the fact that many Chinese items are smuggled from Nepal duty free, also many...
No, but it's hardly profitable & is being propped up by PE money. I didn't claim that everything made by China is bad, because it's not, however most of the high quality stuff is cheap because of state help &/or razor thin margins hence both are unsustainable.
Also the profits in the smartphone...
Yeah you got me :(
You still didn't explain why do we need China just to get Lithium batteries when the same lithium can be imported from Argentina, Australia, Chile to make Li-ion batteries? Surely there isn't a secret Chinese sauce added to it, is there :o:
The batteries make up for 5~15% of...
Reread the post, again o_O
Extracting Lithium is a hard & time consuming process, not unlike rare earths, both are in abundance in the US but also more expensive & environmentally unsafe to extract especially rare earths :disagree:
Search google or baidu for Rare Earths Trade Dispute & then...
If you couldn't understand the context of having Tesla extracting lithium, for it's own batteries, & rare earths being mentioned in the same post then you certainly won't understand the point I was making
That's because they're super cheap, as compared to many other parts of the world, & rare earth extraction is also bad for the environment not necessarily because only China has lithium or rare earth minerals ;)...
