Right now JMSDF (Japanese Maritime Self Defense Force) owns 6 Aegis destroyers which are 4 Kongo class and 2 Atago class. Looking at how they are adopting BMD baseline 5.0 and ACB12 ( criteria of 2012) for their Atago Class, we can see JMSDF is giving an effort constructing their AEGIS BMD system. According to Yomiuri Shimbun, Japan is now planning to build 2 more Aegis destroyers ( guess it is something near to Atago flight 2 ) and will construct 8 Aegis destroyer system, 2 vessels each for 4 escort flotilla (Yokosuka, Sasebo, Maizuru and Kure). As what Yomiuri says, they're public-known reason for making 2 more vessels is N.Korea, though as many of you guys can easily know, their actual reason seems to be (of course) China.

The Yomiuri Shimbun -

The government will start building two Aegis-equipped destroyers with the latest missile defense systems starting next fiscal year, in light of the progress seen in missile development by North Korea, The Yomiuri Shimbun has learned.

The Defense Ministry will include related expenses in its budgetary requests, informed sources said. The government will start building one destroyer in the next fiscal year and the other in fiscal 2016, aiming at reinforcing the defense system by increasing Aegis-equipped vessels from the current six to eight in fiscal 2020, sources said.

The government had unveiled its policy of introducing two more Aegis-equipped destroyers within 10 years in the National Defense Program Guidelines, adopted by the Cabinet late last year.

Earlier this year, North Korea continually test-fired what were believed to be short- and mid-range missiles.

Defense Minister Itsunori Onodera recently said, “While the deployment of missiles in readiness for battle proceeds (in North Korea), the country is carrying out exercises to further improve the capability (of its missile system),” leading the government to conclude that the number of Aegis-equipped destroyers should be increased as soon as possible.

It will cost about ¥150 billion and take five years to build one Aegis-equipped destroyer.

Four of the Maritime Self-Defense Force’s six Aegis-equipped destroyers are Kongo-type destroyers equipped with the missile defense system.

An Aegis-equipped destroyer carries an advanced detection and information processing system capable of striking multiple targets such as aircraft, missiles, destroyers and submarines. The government is also bringing forward reinforcement of the defense system because China has been strengthening its development and deployment of ballistic missiles and cruise missiles capable of attacking vessels.

The SPY-1D Radar's production ends in 2017, which Japan seems to be able to take it's last bus to make their Aegis destroyer with SPY-1D. Or else, it will be much expensive AMDR for them to choose, which the expense will be highly increased for the 2 more Aegis destroyer.

However, this isn't such a delightful choice for JMSDF. Right now under rule of Shinjo Abe, JMSDF is trying to grow bigger with more ships. As we know, Japan has enough money to take this action but they are lacking people and that is why those new ships built for JMSDF highly takes care of automation and crew member decrease. In there view point, these 2 new Aegis destroyers are not effective in contrast to it's cost that with this amount of money to build and amount of people to operate these 2 vessels, they can make and operate about 4 ships which can overtake any kind of Chinese navy warship. (eg : Akizuki and Takanami class)

@Red Mahura What's the S.Korea Navy building plan ?
As I know, it is 3 more Aegis Destroyers, Incheon Class Batch 2 and 3 and KDDX. Except the Incheon class, KDDX and KD-3 Batch 2 is planned to be built in 2020s. Though as I mentioned, SPY-1D's production ends in 2017, which it will be the AMDR radar to be used for KD-3 batch 2 but the Arleigh Burke class flight 3 with AMDR will cost more than $ 2.4 billion, which with current investment, it wouldn't be available to build 3 KD-3 batch 2. It feels like everytime I see Korean development of weapon, they don't invest enough which becomes a trouble at future; no mater if the problem is big or small.

Well MONEY is the big problem, specially to import SPY-1D or AMDR from outside will cost more money.
I remember Japanese can produce SPY-1 radar in Japan, isn't it ? If American close SPY-1D produce line, why not Japan continue to produce their SPY-1 radars ?

Accordindg to Japanese news paper (don't remember which one) Japan has already ordered two sets of SPY-1D AEGIS system in November 2013. Even if they didn't they won't be late as the production of SPY-1D ends in 2017 and they will build those two ships from 2015 and 16.

@Nihonjin1051 : Surely this is a great opportunity for Japan to design and produce an indigenous radar, battle management and missile system for their new destroyers?

they have their indigenous hardware system and processing system, and their Akizuki class Destroyer is the prime example of their experiment to made an indigenous Aegis capable destroyer.

Yes, I am aware of the indigenous designs.

Japan has the knowledge base and should develop this to a higher level and so should look to stopping dependence on US and not purchase any more AEGIS systems.

Why? they recognize US made system is far cheaper to be acquired than their own made and yet reliable and sophisticated enough to lead against any adversary in the region. Summary, they want the best thing for their Naval forces, in price and technology.
