What's new

Some thoughts!!

We should introduce conscription.Atleast NCC should be given more importance.

In Lucknow army Public school we had all these activities. We used to have swimming competitions, horse riding but we were not taught to use guns.Though swimming and horse riding were not compulsory.
We used to have "work experience" classes where guys were taught "carpentering" and gals had the option of choosing "art and craft" or "batik".
you're right education should not be just limited to reading books. I am for more and more activities in the school.
Unfortunately the CBSE syllabus is so extensive that children dont get time to do anything other than studying. The syllabus should be made intensive.

Edit:

We used to also get "community service" as punishment when the whole class used to default on something. :(

There is a great deal of variation from school to school. Look at how Vijay Mallaya is creating a better school for the rich and powerful. The advantages given to these kids are not available to the poor. This is a serious issue.

Well yes theres a variation.
Due to dad's transferable job and field postings I had to switch to Kendriya Vidyalaya schools too, where these facilities were not provided.
But on the other hand army public schools are headed by army officers and hence enough importance is given to sports and other life skills.

@chak de INDIA would you like to add to this??? :)

i agree the schools headed by military officers are leagues above. It sad to see newly independent nations place so much emphasis on education while our govt sat on its *** for 60 yrs

Thanks Chuck!!! :-)
Some how I wasnt sooo lucky when it came to KVs.
KV Bikaner had none of this when I was there.Though let me tell you Bikaner is a peace station/ bog city and the school should have had a better infrastructure.
But kudos to my Princi in KV Nagaland who despite the shortage of funds made sure that students got as much facilities as possible.

I want to discuss the following things which came to mind while having afternoon rest. I think our education system (some in school and some in college) must have the following subjects(not related to mark and not for long duration) as compulsory.

Swimming : About 80% of City people do not know swimming resulting in deaths like Andaman, Mahanadi incidents. All children must be taught basic swimming. Even a 5-10 minutes remaining afloat may save your life.

Learning to use Gun : Do not assume that I am getting paranoid or being apocalyptic. See owing a gun is not same as learning to use a gun. I have shot only 5 rounds in a .303 rifle during my NCC days and now have a air rifle (which does not require License). No I am not advocating conscription or neither advocating firearms in each house (I can see the result in Pakistan)!!

House maintenance : Painting, little bit of plumbing, little bit of carpentering etc..

I will add more when I think more.....:coffee:

@levina @Sidak @DRAY @chak de INDIA @Dem!god @scorpionx @SarthakGanguly @Skull and Bones @janon @SpArK @Srinivas And others as I am in a hurry to mention..

I agree with the bolded part.

No.... just no. Conscription is a waste of money, resources and ruins the quality of our army. And apart from that even a threat to national security.

Well, another POV is that conscription would help India in various ways. You will have a group of ppl prepared in any emergency and who will know what to do. They can assist in any natural disaster. Basic first aid/ CPR training can be imparted to them. Israel does it and it is a great advantage for their nation. On top of that, we always complain how the illerate, uneducated backward ppl are bringing down Inda by voting for corrupt politicans. This way if done correctly by patriots, can educate these youngsters and future generations, the importance of voting, nation building, nationalism, patriotism, etc. These issues far outweigh the negatives you brought up. We have national security threats as we speak.....doing this may help to capture such culprits and prevent wayward youth from joining such crap.

Conscripts and standing army are two different entities and both can co-exist.National security is looked after by the standing army.
Conscription is helpful in many ways.It increases the overall level of mental and physical fitness of the young people, builds a sense of team-spirit and creates a far deeper feeling of nationalism. The level of preparedness increases.I am sure if money has to be spent by the government for the people then the most important aspect should be a healthy all-round development of the youth of the nation.

Spending money on the youth? Hell yeah... spending it on forcing them to train for military serive? NO.... there are soooo incredibly more useful areas to spend money on in India to improve the educational and physical skills of the young people.
Spend money on quality education provided by the government (from basic schooling to higher education), invest in building up a proper sports culture, make proper nutrition compulsory for every school, invest in better training for teachers etc etc etc.... This is gonna be so much better than forcing youngsters to deviate from their own paths and to join something they don want to.

And conscripts are of lesser quality than regulars anyways, lack morale and simply waste money, time and resources.

And who is gonna pay for that?
