Russian military equipment needed to combat terrorism
Tariq Iqbal | Aug 9, 2007, 13:25

Pakistan has asked Russia for military weapons and reconnaissance aircrafts to combat terrorism in its remote areas and high mountain terrain bordering Afghanistan.

"We have recently asked Russia to provide equipment for anti-terrorist operations," Pakistani Ambassador Mustafa Kamal Qazi.

Mustafa Kamal has said that Pakistani request has been made calling for closer Russia-Pak ties in combating terrorism and illegal drug trafficking. However, he denied to disclose the equipment requested by Pakistan.

"Anti-terror combat has its own specifics. They have bases in remote mountain areas between Pakistan and Afghanistan and often cross border -- you cannot go there by civilian helicopters," Qazi was quoted as saying by the daily.

"There is a need for aerial reconnaissance. That's why we have asked Russia for equipment, which could help us in combating with terrorists. This is aircraft and means of aerial reconnaissance," he said.

Pakistan currently uses Russian made Mi-17 dual-purpose helicopters, and it is believed that it is interested in acquiring helicopter gunships which are ususally used to fight the militants with the night-fighting capabilities.

The only night-fighting helicopter gunship currently in service with Pakistan is AH-1 Cobra helicopters which are probably not enough and expensive to continue fighting war on terror effectively.

an excellent diplomatic move by Pakistan, if it yields the desired result of rather than getting some gunships, if it all they can make a concerte relationship with the Russians.

Kamov Ka-50
Kamov Ka-52 Alligator

The Kamov Ka-52 (NATO reporting name Hokum), nicknamed the Alligator is a Russian attack helicopter.

Ka-52 "061", Zhukovski, 2001It is a side-by-side two-seat aircraft designed as air-to-air attack helicopter, intended to eliminate enemy frontline helicopters. The two sets of coaxial, contra-rotating rotors eliminate the need for a tail rotor. The Ka-52 was designed with an emphasis on being small, quick, and agile to improve survivability. The Ka-52 is equipped with ejection seats and jettisonable rotor like the Ka-50, an unusual feature for helicopters. The fall of the Soviet Union prevented the Ka-52 from going into full scale production; currently only a handful of them exist. Like most other Soviet aircraft of the time, it is believed to have superior flight characteristics but less advanced avionics to its Western counterparts- the AH-64 Apache and Eurocopter Tiger. [citation needed]

There is also the more prevalent single seat version designated Kamov Ka-50 "Black Shark" or "Werewolf." And the most modern version, Ka-50-2 Erdogan.

Later aircraft were designated Ka-136.

Twelve "Ka-52" are planned for purchase to 2015 [1].

Rovialk is gone i think!

Well the Rooivalk is gone, but the A129 isn't....

I doubt the request will be the helo's you mention above.

They would probably be Hinds or regular transport helo's. Not a one where they would have to fund the re-opening of production lines at Kamov.

I think the best contender would be the Mi-35, the upgraded version of the venerable Mi-25 Hind

It will be mostly weaponized Mi-17's and at most Mi-25 Hinds

Why does Pakistan want Mi-25/35 when they already have/getting Cobras from the Americans?

Why does Pakistan want Mi-25/35 when they already have/getting Cobras from the Americans?

Cobras are expensive to maintain and pakistan cannot continue with them for WOT use.

Actually Mi25 are more expensive to operate than Cobra's.

I am sure Pakistan is looking for Mi-17's weaponized.

Isn't MI25 very bulky and its maneuverability is very bad....easy to get hit through manpad.

I think, if there is any request. It would be a request for either additional Mi-17 helicopters or Next generation helicopter gunships.

Thanks.

Which russians dont have, especially since they wont open the Ka-52 assembly lines for the few orders of Pak. It is definitly weaponized Mi-17
