Iran warns US after House passes sanctions bill -PressTV

Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Ali Shamkhani

Senior Iranian officials have warned the US against renewing sanctions on Tehran after the House of Representatives passed a bill on Tuesday to restore the bans in breach of a nuclear accord.

US lawmakers voted 419 to one for a 10-year reauthorization of the Iran Sanctions Act (ISA), which was initially adopted in 1996 on the unfounded ground that Tehran was pursuing a non-civilian nuclear program.

The ISA will expire at the end of 2016 if it is not renewed and the bill must be passed by the Senate before being signed by the US president into law.

Iranian officials warned the US against renewing the ban in light of the fact that Iran has had the sanctions lifted on the back of its 2015 nuclear accord with world powers, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council Ali Shamkhani addressed US officials on Tuesday night in a strident tone.

“If you extend the sanctions, this will mean kicking the JCPOA away and we will confront it through implementing powerful technical packages,” he said, without elaboration. (MY assesment: they will instal one extra gen one centrifuge and will held a mouring ceremony on the conceretfilled nuclear reactor of Arak)

The agreement was struck in July 2015 between Iran and the P5+1 group comprising the US, France, China, Britain, Russia and Germany.

Addressing the pro-Israeli lobby group AIPAC back in March, US President-elect Donald Trump declared that his "number-one priority” would be to "dismantle the disastrous deal with Iran.”

Back in July, Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei said, “We will not violate the JCPOA, but if the opposite side violates it - as US presidential candidates are currently threatening to tear up the JCPOA - if they tear up the JCPOA, we will burn it.”

Trump, himself, has conceded that it would be hard to destroy a deal enshrined in a United Nations resolution. In August 2015, he said he would not "rip up” the nuclear deal, but that he would "police that contract so tough they don’t have a chance.”

huuum, technical packages!
MY assessment:
1.they will install one extra centrifuge (dry turned gen-one of course)
2.Mr Rohani will held a funeral speech while he is strongly standing on the now-concrete-filled Arak nuclear reactor core and will order Iranian nuclear organization to work harder!

He will likely be reading a eulogy for his own political career if this deal falls apart. He and zarif put a lot of their political credibility on the line for this deal,If it fails then they are going to be left with some very, very stark choices to make, not only about how to respond to the tearing up of the deal but simply how are they going to salvage something from whats left,if anything,of their political futures from this debacle.

this time so far after senate passed LISA ( The Iran and Libya Sanctions Act of 1996 (ILSA) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iran_and_Libya_Sanctions_Act ) sanction which is clear violation of paragraph 26 section 4-2 , 4-2-1 and 4-3 , 4-3-1 4-3-2 from look of it when Obama sign that to law the whole JCPOA will be under minded and from there i can go anywhere . because it is clear violation and the wording in JCPOA wil show that .

DR. Fereidoun Abbasi uncovered more lies from Rohani and his puppet Salehi about Arak reactor, the truth about future of our nuclear science under this deal, even if 10 years later would end today! it's really sad:

at least not now, cause I'm not really in the mood of translation.
I spent lots of my time on discussing JCPOA with Iranian members (unfortunately in other threads) who didn't even bother to read the original documents and (they) just referred to the lies from this government, though I keep these Farsi language links for such cases.

my main goal in this topic is to create a timeline of events before the failure of this deal.

Just read that the US Congress passed a bill banning the sale of air craft to Iran. So much for the deal and working towards peace.

I hope, to the Iranian members here, that I'm wrong about what I'm about to say but... here goes it anyway.

The only feasible reason for this blocking bill that passed the current congress 247 to 140 (not quite sure on this) is not to give Iran the sales because of reasons dealing with terrorism or the suspicion that Iran will convert a civilian air craft into a military one. I have been honestly thinking that the entire US establishment (with an exception of a few people and groups) has a deep rooted hatred for Iran and Iranians. It just boggles my mind that the Congress would even think that blocking a deal that would create thousands of jobs for Americans and bring in billions would somehow be dangerous and counterintuitive.

I can't stop thinking that this is just all a joke on the side of the Americans (my government). They wish for Iran's destruction completely and a balkanization of its lands. I guess it all makes sense...ugh....

Really Iran's government is right. It doesn't matter who's elected they're all Isreali and Saudi stooges. They still have control over our country. Trump will be controlled in time as well and even worse the man is an Isreali firster lol.

I know the bill might get vetoed from the current president but if Trump is in he will do all sorts of dumb things that will reverse all the pragmatic progress that was made.

Iran, Iranians... just continue doing what your doing regardless of what my corrupt sell out fascist imperial puppet government says and or does.

I would take that 10 billion that you wanna sign a deal with the shady Russians with and just build as many missiles and SAM'S and humanly possible, and just bide your time.

Iran Nuclear Deal Opponents to Trump: Don't 'Rip it Up'
By Masood Farivar, VOA

WASHINGTON - Republicans and other long-time opponents of an international nuclear agreement with Iran have walked back calls to scrap the deal and are now urging the incoming Trump administration to stiffen it rather than unravel what President-elect Donald Trump once termed as "the worst deal ever negotiated."

With Iran and European allies imploring the new administration to honor the accord that restricted Iran's nuclear program in exchange for sanctions relief, fear is growing that a unilateral withdrawal from the deal would leave the U.S. internationally isolated and might even push Tehran to reinstate its suspected nuclear weapons program.

That fear is shared by the deal's critics.

The Foundation for the Defense of Democracies, a conservative think tank in Washington, was an early supporter of the "stop the Iran nuclear deal" campaign and pressed members of Congress last year to block it. While it remains critical of what it sees as a dangerous and flawed agreement, it now opposes rescinding it.

"There are risks of the U.S. withdrawing," said Orde Kittrie, a senior fellow at the foundation and a professor of law at Arizona State University. "If the U.S. withdraws from the deal, Iran would feel free to cast off the restrictions on its nuclear program. It would be very hard to reinstate the sanctions. U.S. allies would be very upset."

No legal reason

Legally, the new president will have the authority to simply walk away from the pact, legal scholars say. The deal was deliberately structured not as a treaty but as a non-binding international agreement, and the U.N. Security Council resolution that endorsed it does not require its members to abide by it.

"There would not be any direct international legal consequences if the U.S. were to change its view," said Edward Swaine, a law professor at George Washington University and a former counselor on international law at the U.S. State Department.

Another early critic of the deal was Eliot Cohen, a professor at the Johns Hopkins University and a former State Department official known for his hawkish foreign policy views. Cohen said he was not "in favor of the Iran deal," but he now opposes its abandonment.

"If the president wanted to [rescind the agreement], yes, the president can do that but a normal president would not do that just because of all the expectations of our allies..." he said Wednesday at a conference sponsored by the Middle East Institute, a nonpartisan Washington think tank.

Congressional opponents have walked back from calls to kill the deal altogether. After failing to block the agreement last year, Republican members of Congress are now pushing for tighter restrictions on Iran on top of renewing non-nuclear related sanctions dating back to the 1990s.

"I don't think there is going to be a push to throw this deal out the window," Kittrie said. "My sense is you're going to have a push from Congress to implement the deal vigorously and to basically push back against Iranian mischief in the region."

'Worst of backroom deals'

The agreement, signed by Iran and six major world powers, imposed severe curbs on Iran's nuclear program in exchange for lifting crippling international sanctions releasing billions of dollars in frozen Iranian assets.

The Obama administration and other proponents of the deal argue it will restrict Iran's ability to build a nuclear bomb for the next 10 to 15 years.

President-elect Trump and other critics say the U.S. made too many concessions and received no guarantee that Iran will not pursue its nuclear ambitions or run roughshod in the Middle East.

The concern that Trump intends to "rip up" the deal dates back to comments he made last year on NBC's "Meet the Press." Though he called the deal "horrible" and said it could lead to a "nuclear holocaust," he equivocated when asked whether it would survive a Trump administration.

"It's very hard to say. We're ripping it up," he said.

Like other deals he's inherited, he said he'd "police that contract so tough that they don't have a chance."

Trump's national security appointees are among Iran's harshest critics in foreign policy circles and have taken a similar stance. Republican Congressman Mike Pompeo, named on Friday to head the Central Intelligence Agency, has called the agreement the "worst of backroom deals," and claimed that it raises the risk of allowing Iran to acquire nuclear weapons. Michael Flynn, a former head of the Defense Intelligence Agency who was appointed as Trump's National Security Adviser, has strongly come out against it.

Rather than abandoning an agreement that U.S. allies support and Iran is widely believed to be complying with, Kittrie said, the Trump administration will likely toughen its stance against Iran, demanding more intrusive inspections of the country's nuclear program and take steps to rein in "Iranian mischief outside the nuclear program."

Iran's quandary

Iran has rejected calls to renegotiate the deal and its foreign minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, last week urged Trump to honor it, saying it's not a bilateral agreement "for one side to be able to scrap."

Iranian-FM-Mohammad-Javad-Zarif-6.jpg

Ali Akbar Velayati, the top foreign policy adviser to Iran's supreme leader, Ali Khamenei, echoed Khamenei's tough stance: If the administration pulls out of the agreement, "Iran will set it afire," he said in comments Wednesday by Iran's official news agency.

A U.S. withdrawal from the agreement will present Iran with a conundrum. On the one hand, Iran can resume its nuclear enrichment program, arguing that the deal does not have the force of law with one of its signatories out.

On the other hand, Iran has reaped vast economic benefits from the lifting of international sanctions and may decide to stick with the agreement in order to expand its ties with Europe, Russia and China.

"The Iranians will have to decide whether the European markets are worth it or one could imagine Iran simply saying, 'The deal is off,' and we'll unwind all the way back to where we were five, six years ago," said Duncan Hollis, an international law professor at Temple University.

Netanyahu to urge Trump to 'tighten noose' on Iran, not scrap nuke deal

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu plans to push President-elect Donald Trump into tougher Iran sanctions, officials told Bloomberg.

A senior Israeli official reportedly said that Netanyahu had already talked with national security advisors and plans are in the works.

Former national security adviser to Netanyahu, retired Major General Yaakov Amidror stated that, “The urgent task is to stop Iran from becoming a superpower in the region, something that has been occurring for some time now.”

“The prime minister will argue, first and foremost, that the US should work to diminish the partnership between Russia and Iran in the region,” Amidror added.

As far as the Iran deal itself goes, Netanyahu isn't looking to end the Iran deal, he instead is looking for Trump to have a firm stance against Iran, according to an official.

The official elaborated, stating that stronger sanctions may be needed along with a stronger retaliations working to stop ballistic missile development in Iran.

Working to stop Iran's proxies that are close to Israel, such as in the Gaza Strip as well as in Lebanon and Syria was also listed as a goal.

Robert Satloff, executive director of the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, explained that Trump attempting to trash the deal would not do much as other world powers would need to be convinced to sanction Iran and cut of trade with the country.

Satloff explained that, “The argument will be to work hand in hand with Israel on tightening the noose around Iran rather than sever the deal and open up a Pandora’s box between America and global powers, freeing Iran from whatever constraints that currently exist."

According to a Netanyahu spokesman, Trump and Netanyahu have not yet set a date to meet. He also stated that he was unable to speak about strategy talks pertaining to Iran.

Well netanyahu won't support the deal in its current form in fact he is against it if it remain as its now so well they are still valid in their reasoning for supporting it.

But honestly it's the most nonsensical and shortsighted reason for supporting the deal. As far as I believe the deal in its current form is beneficial to us no mater if USA honor its obligations or fail them , its all about people relation and making good image its about making the program legitimate in international forums if USA honor its obligations good for them and good for us in the deal the other side is USA government not Congress or Senate so if they don't honor their part it will be USA and its Europeans partner to deal with it if they don't want us to renew our work with a lot faster pace , after all it was not our first time that we put restrain on our program in fact the first time we completely stopped it but when it become clear they don't want to reach any conclusion we broke the seals and started our program without breaking any sweat they knew we can do that again and they really don't like that probability so I believe they won't do anything that endanger the deal as they are well aware that Iran next government may not be so keen on the deal as the current one . netanyahu like it or hate it has no validity he can fume over it till he get a stroke like his predecessor, we don't give a damn about him.
