The rationale is simply this: that the women were considered, and are still considered, the weaker sex; that in itself is a sexist classification, but it is the basis for the code that a woman, any woman, is completely invulnerable at the hands of a gentleman. Such a punishment is not an individual act, it is an act of the state implementing the laws it has given itself.

I don't consider women weaker. I think they should have equal careers. I look at them as equals. I don't care if they are home makers are not. WIthout men being there they wouldn't be able to do that. They aren't doing something that no one else is capable of.

To me it is quite simple. I see women as equals yet don't consider them special or out of the ordinary. They aren't doing anything that is extraordinary. Yes a lot of men don't like staying home and raising kids. But by the same token, a lot of women don't like working 10 hours a day. Nearly no woman wants to do construction -- which is necessary to bring our civilization forward.

Another way to look at it is that, if we must hold all women in high esteem because some of them do certain things in the house, then we must hold men in equal regard for doing back breaking work that has brought our civilization so much further, where we can taken so many amenities for granted that we couldn't even a 100 years ago.
