A well-fitted passenger launch, claimed to be the country's best in terms of size and comfort, makes its maiden voyage on Saturday night to Barisal from capital Dhaka, official said.

Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu, along with Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan and Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, formally inaugurated the service of Sunderban-10 Launch on Dhaka-Barisal route in city’s Sadarghat tarminal, reports BSS.

"This is another milestone in private sector ferry service that would connect two major cities of the country," the industries minister said as the chief guest on the occasion.

The four-storey launch is 300 feet long, 50 feet wide and fitted with modern amenities like lift and wi-fi uncommon in other vessels on the route.

Built at a local dockyard over a period of nearly three years, Sunderban-10 will operate every alternate day from Dhaka and Barisal and cross the night journey in five hours, company sources told BSS. Fare for each trip would vary from Taka 1,000 to Tk 6,000 depending on the size and facilities of the cabins.

Company sources said the Launch, which is capable to carrying 1400 passengers and significant cargo, will be operated hydraulically and can move forward under deep fog conditions guided by a modern radar. Close Circuit (CC) cameras have also been installed to ensure passengers security as well as Echo Sounder to measure river depth to avoid submerged shoals.

Plastics is a growing sector in Bangladesh for both local and exports, and Bengal Polymer is a leading player in it (their plastic chip consumption per day is around 250 tons).

Some of the products may seem trivial - but it is an important market....

I think most items made for food and water are now BPA free. At least that's what their labeling says.

But testing for BPA is easy. I'm sure BSTI has tested it. Otherwise they could not sell it overseas and it would be a shortsighted business plan. Look at the last picture - they're selling their stuff at Walmart I think.

Vidya is representative of a new generation of women entrepreneurs in Bangladesh now, joined by women like Ayesha Aziz Khan (Summit Group) and Sohana Noor (Otobi). A very heartening trend, having conscientious women business leaders like these who are aware of the greater benefits of benevolence in 'social business'.
