What's new

Russian Tu-22M3 bombers have been photographed in Iran's Hamedan Airbase

Less distance to ISIS scum = more dead ISIS scum.

I like that Equation.

This is the first time that Iran is cooperating with a foreign country in this capacity. Iran and Russia are in a race to push ISIS out of Aleppo before the next round of negotiations starts.I think there are a lot that Iranians specially IRIAF can learn from this joint effort.

The IRIAF has always been familiar with long range strikes.

But in this case, the same sort of thing is not possible given the lack of quality aircraft and their related support. Very few tanker aircraft remain in service, and there are less strike aircraft as well. The only way to bring the IRIAF back to its glory days is to completely replace all its aircraft. The Su-30 - a long range multirole aircraft - would do well to serve this role.

Doesn't Russia have an airbase in Syria? that would be much more closer to ISIS scums ...I mean Hmeimim in Latika ..maybe the the airport ain't suitable for these birds ,,,

Are you aware of any update or news of Iran purchasing Su-30 from Russia?

Soviet made these as long range strategic and maritime strike bombers , some part of nuclear triad strategy (ICBM,SLBM,bomber) . Now they are mostly used as cruise missile carrier or carpet bombing plane . It's not possible to use them as cruise missile carriers in Syria and It's not safe to keep them in Syria as it takes more time to prepare them to fly in an emergency situation, well ,They are not jet fighters . BTW nothing to be happy about it . I am sure Russians even don't let Iranians get near these Soviet era LOOLOOs .

Iran should be a bit careful though. I don't want Russian guests to overstay their welcome. No permanent foreign presence in Iran. Not even an extended period. The presence should be minimum, get in, get out.

Agreed.

I think that is the case.

No :(

So Russia , U.S, U.K and France now have military bases/presence in all middle Eastern countries. Interesting. :taz:

First of all what is with your avatar? have jointed communist party of NK? :enjoy:

As I understand I was right the problem ain't about preparation or not being jet fighters but mostly due to lack of operational compatibility of Hmeimim airbase for these birds .... TU-22M takeoff distance are around 2540m while you must also include a section suitable to stop the plane in the event of an emergency with take off abandon ..Hamedan airbase has got 2 runways one 4kms length and the other 4.3 kms while Hmeimim airbase's runway is 2.8 kms .... moreover Tu-22 can not refueled during flight so to get from Mozdok airport to Iran (at least 1500 kms) it needs to be loaded with a lot of fuel.

Russian Tu-22M3 'Backfire' long-range bombers strike ISIS from Iran's Hamadan airfield
Currently, the strategic TU-22M3 bombers take flight from southern Russia at Modzok airfield; however, this newly signed military agreement with Iran will allow Russia to reduce flight time by 60%, saving the Kremlin both money and improving airstrike effectiveness.
The core benefit for the Russian Air Force is a drastic reduction in flying time to terrorist targets in Syria.

Russian long-range bombers delivered airstrikes in Syria from a base in Mozdok, Russia, and had to cover a distance of about 2,000km to get to Syrian airspace. Now that distance is reduced to some 700km, so time-sensitive airstrikes can be delivered immediately and more cheaply.

As for Khmeimim Airbase in Syria’s Latakia province, used by Russian task force since September 2015 to deliver airstrikes against Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) – its airstrip is not suitable for the heavy Tu-22M3. But that is subject to change, as Damascus granted Moscow permission to station a permanent military airbase at Khmeimim, and the Russian Air Force is preparing to thoroughly refurbish and modernize the airfield, so it will be able to accommodate all types of military aircraft in the near future.
Military cooperation between Iran and Russia is developing rapidly.

In January this year, Moscow and Tehran signed military cooperation deal that implies wider collaboration in personnel training and counter-terrorism activities. Russia’s Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu and his Iranian counterpart Brigadier General Hossein Dehghan signed the document during a visit by Russia’s top brass to the Iranian capital.

On Monday, Russian media reported that Moscow has once again requested Iran and Iraq to allow cruise missiles to fly through their respective airspace to deliver strikes on terrorist targets in Syria.

Iran, Russia's New Staging Post

Analysis
Satellite imagery from Aug. 17 shows the continued presence of Russian military aviation at Hamedan air base, west of Tehran. A number of Su-34 fighter-bombers are present, with four aircraft located close to each other at the eastern end of the airfield. Photographs posted online Aug. 15 showed at least three Russian Tu-22M3 strategic bombers (also known by their NATO reporting name, Backfire) at the air base. Moscow and Tehran have officially confirmed the presence of Russian military aviation assets in Iran. Having previously used the base as a refueling stop, the Russian aircraft now appear to be conducting operations from there, striking targets in Syria since Aug. 16.

For Moscow, the benefits of this new arrangement are clear. Previously, the Tu-22M3 bombers had been flying from Russia to strike Syria. Staging air power from Iran shortens flight time, enabling Russian warplanes to fly more sorties and carry heavier payloads, while at the same time reducing maintenance and overall costs. Airfields are available in Syria, but Moscow claims that the Tu-22M3 is not suitable for deployment to places such as Hmeimim air base, southeast of Latakia, thanks to the airfield's small size and lack of capacity to handle large aircraft.

Though this is not the first time Russian Tu-22M3s have visited Hamedan air base, it is the first talk of semi-permanent basing — as opposed to forward staging, refueling and resupplying. This could be the continuation of a trend. After their first airstrikes on Syria, Russia's long-range bombers returned to their bases in Russia. In subsequent sorties, these aircraft stopped briefly at Hamedan to refuel. The satellite imagery, obtained by Stratfor through our partners at AllSource Analysis, confirms that the previously sighted Tu-22M3 bombers have since departed.

The presence of Su-34s at Hamedan air base also suggests reasons for Russia's presence beyond airfield suitability; Su-34s are routinely flown from Hmeimim air base in Syria, an airfield much closer to target areas than Hamedan is. One factor contributing to the reallocation of resources could be security concerns. Russia has complained that the tactical and operational security of its air operations in Syria may be compromised, allowing rebels to relocate to avoid incoming airstrikes. Since the rebels have likely planted spotters close to Hmeimim air base to monitor air activity, this is not inconceivable. Staging from Hamedan air base in Iran counters this potential tactic. Furthermore, the deployment of Su-34s to Hamedan air base could also be a means of maintaining a consistent presence there while the larger Tu-22M3 bombers periodically utilize the air base before returning to specialized airfields in Russia.

Hmeimim airbase is overdosing already... There are sometime more than 15 fighters taking off simultaneously in Hmeimim.. They need more bases for more and closer aerial support...

An aircraft carrier is going to the Syrian coast too... There is huge news coming...

Russian forces in Caspian and Black seas and One Iranian air base is getting ready to start something that should have been done years ago...

The Mega operation is underway....

Based on the new developments, Turkey may be part of it too.
