A False Start for Sino-Pakistani JF-17 Thunder?
Malaysia publically declares that it is not considering the JF-17. How come?

Not again. The jointly developed Sino-Pakistani JF-17Thunder has apparently suffered another false start. As the Diplomat reported last month, Malaysian officials previously indicated that they were considering the JF-17 as a contender to its fighter replacement program. Kuala Lumpur’s interest in the aircraft was signaled last month by its High Commissioner to Pakistan, Dr. Hasrul Sani, who, according to the Associated Press of Pakistan, discussed the fighter against the backdrop of boosting the bilateral relationship in general. “I think the Malaysians might be genuinely interested because Pakistan has a respectable defense industry, with the products being considerably cheaper compared to the West due to cheap labor.”

However, Malaysian Defense Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein has publically denied media reports that the country is considering the JF-17 as part of its Air Force modernization plans last Tuesday. Whether this discrepancy is due to a mistake or speculation on the part of Sani, or whether Kuala Lumpur has changed its mind, is currently unknown. One possibility is that China has requested that Pakistan withdraw its offer to Malaysia, due to tensions in the South China Sea.

Prior to Tuesday’s denial, author, analyst and former Australian defense attaché to Islamabad Brian Cloughley believed the Malaysian interest to be genuine, but cautioned there was more to consider. “Heads of diplomatic missions don’t usually say things publicly that aren’t accurate,” he said. “So there is probably something in this, in that interest appears to have been expressed, but the devil is as always in the detail, and there will have to be agreement by Beijing to any movement toward a deal.”

As The Diplomat has reported on many occasions over the last couple of years, the JF-17’s export prospects have been subject to numerous rumors and false starts. There have long been speculations that Myanmar, Sri Lanka and several African and Middle Eastern states are or have been considering the JF-17. Until earlier this week, when Islamabad and Colombo signed an agreement on the sale of 8 JF-17s for the Sri Lankan air force,Pakistani officials have on several occasions announced that the aircraft has found a buyer, only for this to be proven false later.

Malaysia is reported to be considering several alternatives for its air force modernization program, which will replace Kuala Lumpur’s aging F-5 E/Fs and Russian MiG-29s. Swedish Saab’s Gripen is rumored to be the leading contender, but Boeing’s F/A-18 E/F Super Hornet and the Eurofighter Typhoon are also being considered.

As price is an important factor for Malaysia’s choice, the JF-17 would be a strong candidate. Whether its decision to drop the aircraft is due to Chinese involvement or not, politics and the defense industry are still very intertwined in Southeast Asia.

The news item is more like anti JF-17 specific rather than some normal news. In my view this is promoting JF-17 more rather than maligning it.

It's not over till it's over and it hasn't even begun yet. Don't take the words of these pseudo experts seriously, just wait. The fact that JF-17 program has come a long way technologically that should suffice to answer the author that ''No, your concerns are unwarranted, JF-17 is a progressive program"

am not sure if a country evaluating Typhoon, Super Hornet and Gripen would have even given enough consideration.

Malaysia has the cash to get the Western aircraft but they might be interested only when some other country in the region goes after the JF-17. So far it is not know if there are others in that region who are considering JF-17's.

I dont think thats the case really. If you have the cash and are able to maintain them, then you would definitely go for a better aircraft otherwise they wouldnt have initiated the process of evaluation of those aircrafts at the first place.

The consideration has to seen on the type of aircraft that is being replaced. Still the options that are available are for the future threats that Malaysia could face and the consideration that they do not have any threat from China.

Indonesia on the other hand is procuring 50 KFX and a deal has already been signed. So the Gripen, Super Hornet and EFT are almost not significant hence they can consider a cheaper fighter aircraft like the JF-17 as it might give them a numerical advantage.

Again we are simply speculating here. The only fact that we have in front of us is.. that Malaysia has officially denied considering jf 17.

The one thing that is super weird about the "joint" fighter is in the other partner. Why can't the Chinese market this plane? or even fly it in airshows? they are after all the other partner.. Many here say JF 17 type aircraft is not in the current doctrine of China and hence will not induct it. If so, why be a joint partner for such a plane? Why didn't they offer PAK partnership in a plane they could both use?

With no ill intensions, one has to say PAK should not be the one to market the plane, it should have been done jointly with equal and forceful participation or done alone by China. Something here does not add up to me with Chinese participation or the lack of it.

Any views?

IT is being marketed by both countries and tge first sale was confirned during Paris Airshow where officials from both countries were present.. The deliveries are to begin from 2016-17.. To an unnamed Asian country.... This was confirmed by a 3 star PAF official.

The Malaysian deal was announced by the Malaysian ambassador and not by Pakistan.. Same goes for SL... Although Nigerian defence budget (which was released recently) also confirms the deal for 3 JFs and 10 SMs...

More than the technicalities and cost, the biggest test for JF-17 would be to see how many developing countries can go against the combined interests of both US & India. Chinese power would surely help it's cause. Only time would tell.

PDF fanboys responsible for fanning many such rumours

Yeah that's well said!
Technological ability won't just be the only factor. Can the Chinese influence the developing countries (potential buyers) in a way that negates the US influence and hence the actual pitching would be done on that front.

Off topic: IMO Tejas might just fair well in winning orders as and when its export version is made available owing solely to its support from the US and Russian blocks
