The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is in the final stages of negotiations to buy French Rafale fighter jets, the head of the Gulf nation's air force told Reuters on Wednesday.

Defence sources have said Abu Dhabi is looking to purchase 60 fighter jets and is closely studying the Dassault-built Rafale after an earlier evaluation of the four-nation Eurofighter.

"I think we are in the final stage of negotiations," Major General Ibrahim Nasser Al Alawi, commander of the UAE Air Force and Air Defence, said when asked how close the UAE was to a deal to buy the Rafale.

He also stressed that no final decision had been taken.

@PARIKRAMA @anant_s so the UAE is going to get more Rafales than India ;)
:woot:

if this is deal is done , the mirage 2K-9 might go to a lucky new user

UAE too has operated Mirage 2000 in past and no doubt impressed with Dassault bird.
Indeed, aside from the IAF's Mirage 2000-5 Mk.2s the UAE's M2K-9s are the closest "relatives" to the Rafales around.

In the past there were rumours the UAE deal with the French govt would include a buy back element for their M2K-9s, is this still under consideration/a condition?

picdermind-oil (user in another blog and ex dassault) has stated about a month and half back that UAE negotiations have advanced to the crucial stage for 60 jets. In fact the UAE customisations included a much newer version of M88 (possibly M88-9 series) but dont know whther they dropped it or not. Dassault internally is of the view that H1 2016 (Jan-Jun) 2016 will see 2 deals finally signing one of India and other of UAE guaranteeing a minimum of 36+60=96 jets and possibly more under options. What it gives them relief is this kind of 96 orders takes care of 2017 increased productivity of 2.5-3 jets per month by max 3 years. This is certainly good for Dassault.

Interesting to see the customisations details later..especially in RBE newer tech upgrades .. Bcz we do know UAE said no to EF for "the producing nations' lack of commitment for radar upgrades" .

So 60 rafales means at least 600 meteors.. may be 1000 too.. lol thats the kind of numbers UAE would be planning in A2A roles...

They might shift to Russian aircrafts if Pak gets Su-35. We have influence over them.

This is how a deal is made, instead of doing mmrca type mother of all deal drama. Theyy exactly know what they want and go for it.

Stupid Pakistani...that drama got the entire World line up the best they had to offer and India got to evaluate all possible kinds of technology, without spending a dime. We already had lot of Sukhois. It seems no India can directly go for the 5th gen.

Stupid indian logic.
Wasted a decade and still not signed the deal.
Dont give retarded justifications for mmrca joke.

Wasted what ? Saying as if it was your time that was lost.
Our money, our time, our rules.
Be happy with you 5-10 F-16s. By now IAF not only knows all about them, but also what the best possible configuration can be. Not only that, but pretty much every decent fighter in the World.

They need to grow some balls, No matter how many jet they buy.. Arabs are only good at riding camels..

Rumors surface that the UAE, who chose to develop the F-16E/F Block 60 Desert Falcon instead of buying the Rafale, may be willing to replace its Mirage 2000v9 fleet with Rafale aircraft in a $10 billion deal.

If they do, however, they reportedly want some changes to the platform, including engine thrust growth from 16,500 pounds each to 20,000 pounds, an AESA radar, and integration with MBDA’s Meteor long-range missile. Funding from the UAE could help France finance Rafale upgrades, as their key requests are all already planned or in development. where negotiations become interesting is the quid pro quo. A follow-on article in UAE’s The National discusses past licensing-for-exports deals associated with funded modifications to their Mirage 2000 and F-16 platforms. Those deals made the UAE several hundred million dollars when the Mirage 2000v5 modification it helped finance were sold to other countries.

So UAE first tryst with Rafale is 2009 so roughly even UAE talks are more than 6 years plus

A gist from wiki (just for gist)
In 2009, the United Arab Emirates Air Force was interested in an upgraded version of the Rafale with more powerful engines and radar, and advanced air-to-air missiles. In October 2011, Dassault was confident that a US$10-billion deal for up to 60 Rafale aircraft would be signed. However, Deputy Supreme Commander of the Union Defence Force, Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, in November 2011 called the French offer "uncompetitive and unworkable"; France had in 2010 asked the UAE to pay US$2.6 billion of the total cost to upgrade the Rafale. Consequently, the UAE started to explore a purchase of the Eurofighter Typhoon or the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet.

The newspaper La Tribune reported in February 2012, that the UAE was still considering the US$10-billion deal for 60 Rafales. Interoperatibility among the Gulf air forces has led to renewed interest in the Rafale from Qatar and Kuwait. In January 2013, President Hollande stated that he would be discussing the potential sale of Rafale to the UAE during an official visit. In December 2013, it was announced that UAE had decided not to proceed with a deal for the supply of defence and security services, including the supply of Typhoon aircraft. In September 2014 it was announced that the UAE could acquire 40 Rafales in addition to upgrades to its existing Mirage 2000s

I dont see it any better than MMRCA. Especially bcz their confusion over rafale vs EF vs F18 ASH or F16s newer blocks seems more imminent rather than clear L1 status to Dassault with whom we entered into negotiations on 2012 and finally ended MMRCA in 2015 due to multiple issues. Yet 36 off the shelf seems to be progressing quite well and if i count from april 2015 onwards then within max 1 year the deal (contract) may be signed

Again i don know why people compare but then UAE requirements and Indian requirements are quite different.

What so called influence you really meant here ? LOL

@ topic

Good for both France and UAE. No doubt France has gone strict with their policy regarding Rafael sale to Indians after having so many potential buyers this year.
