What's new

Lunch between French and Iranian presidents canceled: France refused request to serve halal food and

hmm.. was he going to die if he did not drink wine once. In state visits, there are people who will go through details(try to get information from various places) about your dietary habits, favourite food, likes, dislikes etc.
Besides apart from wine(is wine really a french idenitity?) you ignored non-halal food being served. If you want to take a moral position regarding halal food, just go veggie. Its all about guest, not you.

Probably cultural difference, I think asian culture(including middle east) puts guests at higher pedestral.

Hey people need to make accommodations. The President of Iran was not going to be served wine and he wasn't going to be served non-halal food. Is having wine in the same room with him against his religion? Is he going to die because of it?

The world is a two way street. Stop acting like it should be a one-way one.

What do the Iranians know about hospitality? Take photos of a landmark and you'll be arrested as a "spy".

you know exactly what I mean.
People of ME might be crazy for all sorts of stuff, but hospitality is one thing they can beat anybody. Once you realize that, you will think.. 'why are we brits like this... why cant we be a bit like them'.:p:

I dont think you will understand... its disrespectful to begin with.
Many muslims drink wine, am sure it not a problem at all for them or for you when you host them. Its less about religion(although it appears so), more about respect.

I'm sure if the President of France was not allowed to drink his favorite bottle of wine at a dinner in Tehran he would find it incredibly disrespectful.

Remember wine making is a LONG tradition in France. They've been drinking wine with their meals for over 2000 years.

I doubt thats how respect works.. what will be disrespectful is using exclusive fully covered female crew member to serve french president when he comes on a visit, or serving really spicy food(after french liason person in the team specifically told you not to serve spicy food because hollande cant handle it).

Did French serve beef to the Indian Hindutva lunatic Modi when he visited Paris ?

Pretty simple to solve this issue, use two tables !!!

Totally agreed. But apparently that's still out of the question since wine would still be in the room.
May need separate buildings.

That's it for me before mods get upset.

The same french will serve Kosher for Israeli prime killer with pleasure. This is hypocrisy and injustice and they are a are not going to make the world a better place.

Do you mean the present Israeli PM? Cuz if so man, you've got to revise your infos on France 2015.
Netanyahu is persona non-grata in France, diplomacy-wise if not stricto sensu.

His last visit, in January after the events in Paris, included a call for French Jews to emigrate to Israel.
France as a state cares nothing for religion but she cares about her citizens, more than most nations.
Trying to steal French people was not a great move by Benjamin, trust me!

So maybe for your call, either in the past or in the future but certainly not now!

Good night man, Tay.

Well before we jump on the French I'm sure if they were to dine in Tehran they would not be allowed to have wine on the table either or pork. So accommodations need to be a two way street not a one way one.

when you invite someone or meet someone you find common grounds.

Very disrespectful , back in 1400-1500 , french used to go to the Ottoman palace and dress as muslims and sit with muslims and admire them

It was great to show off Ottoman era carpets in pictures
Such images were drawn to show how close the Muslim & French leadership was

Books, such as the Muslim holy text, the Quran, were brought back to be integrated in Royal libraries, such as the Bibliothèque Royale de Fontainebleau, to create a foundation for the Collège des lecteurs royaux, future Collège de France.[66] French novels and tragedies were written with the Ottoman Empire as a theme or background.[66] In 1561, Gabriel Bounin published La Soltane, a tragedy highlighting the role of Roxelane in the 1553 execution of Mustapha, the elder son of Suleiman.[66][74] This tragedy marks the first time the Ottomans were introduced on stage in Franc

If I invite someone who is Hindu, I would not serve beef out of courtesy. The French perhaps do not practice such courtesy or not aware of such a common courtesy.

You are mistaken entirely.
Our current PM is pure vegetarian but when he dine with Foreign guest all sort of wines, pork, beef, muttonn or chicken dishes served.
He only eat veg dishes, rest ones are free to eat their choice.
