Is Venus humanity's next home?

I read that part in the article but somehow every other article that I have read gives me an impression that temperature on venus is high.

How Hot is Venus?

I'm confused now.

ladg!!

Temperature on the surface of Venus is high, very high, but the cloud 30-40 Miles above the surface of Venus is not as harsh, and very "earth like".

Although Venus and Earth are similar in size, someone standing on the ground on Venus would experience air about 90 times heavier than Earth's atmosphere; pressures are similar to diving 3,000 feet beneath the ocean. Ironically, the most Earth-like atmosphere in the solar system occurs 30 to 40 miles (50 to 60 kilometers) above the surface of Venus. Both oxygen and hydrogen rise above the heavier gas layer covering the ground, and the pressures are similar to our planet.

  • Carbon dioxide: 96 percent
  • Nitrogen: 3.5 percent
  • Carbon monoxide, argon, sulfur dioxide, and water vapor: less than 1 percent
Venus' Atmosphere: Composition, Climate and Weather

A set of images of the Venus south polar vortex in infrared light (at 3.8 microns) acquired by the Visible and Infrared Thermal Imaging Spectrometer instrument on ESA's Venus Express spacecraft. The images show the temperature of the cloud tops at about 65 km (40.4 miles) altitude.

A darker region corresponds to higher temperature and thus lower altitude. The center of the vortex, at a temperature of about 250K (around minus 9.7 degrees Fahrenheit), is the deepest zone, exhibiting the highest temperature. Credit: ESA/VIRTIS/INAF-IASF/Obs. de Paris-LESIA

However, higher up, the weather gets more interesting, according to a new study of old data by NASA and international scientists. The team detected strange things going on in data from telescopic observations of Venus in infrared light at about 68 miles (110 kilometers) above the planet's surface, in cold, clear air above the acid clouds, in two layers called the mesosphere and the thermosphere.

"Although the air over the polar regions in these upper atmospheric layers on Venus was colder than the air over the equator in most measurements, occasionally it appeared to be warmer," said Dr. Theodor Kostiuk of NASA Goddard.

"In Earth's atmosphere, a circulation pattern called a 'Hadley cell' occurs when warm air rises over the equator and flows toward the poles, where it cools and sinks. Since the atmosphere is denser closer to the surface, the descending air gets compressed and warms the upper atmosphere over Earth's poles. We saw the opposite on Venus. In addition, although the surface temperature is fairly even, we've seen substantial changes – up to 54 degrees Fahrenheit (about 30 K change) – within a few Earth days in the mesosphere – thermosphere layers over low latitudes on Venus. The poles appeared to be more stable, but we still saw changes up to 27 degrees Fahrenheit (about 15 K change)."

Then bring in General Zod and team!!:D

But we all men go to "Venus trap", isn't it??...:D

I think, NASA some times gives themes or projects or asks about ideas all across the globe to different school and colleges. And out of those some gives very practical ideas. I think this is one of the great ideas, but far fetched nonetheless!!

Venus may be habitable, but not now. As the sun will loose its energy, it will be cooler and so the Venus atmosphere (Though I don't know if the temperature comes from within). But it will be for a shorter period wrt to cosmic time, as Sun will turn into a red giant engulfing both Venus and mercury.

Thats not right. The older the sun gets, the hotter she will be. Older stars get incredible hot. Thats why they blow up. But Venus atmosphere is not so hot because the sun. Infact Venus is not much closer to sun than earth. The problem of venus is an incredible strong greenhouse effect. You have so much CO2 in its atmosphere and extreme pressure. All the heat is trapped in it.

I had read it somewhere that right now the surface of venus is smooth compared to earth showing that there's not much tectonic activity on venus( as it lags behind earth when its comes to geological timescale)and once that starts venus would have many active volcanoes ergo making it inhospitable.

Thats still debated. We know not much about Venus surface yet. We only had one craft there in orbit. Venus Express. It found active volcanos. Venus is an interesting planet. So similar to earth but also so different. Like our evil twin ;)

Gotcha!!
I'm sorry I completely misunderstood that sentence.

Venus is a hell hole terraforming it would be a nightmare
and establishing a day–night light cycle on there is practically impossible
can we can live there on floating cities or domed cities ? yes
but it wont be near earth like

I 've strong feeling that nowhere in the near future, we (human beings) 'll shift their base to any other planet.
Huge floating space-stations 're far fetched dreams because the cost to carry it out will be gargantuan.
But nonetheless these space probes might be helpful in myriad ways like understanding the structure and composition of a planet. The unlimited resources in the space is what attracts the greedy human beings. Isnt it?? :)

Let's stay on earth

The next step is more like building floating platforms that can float in sea with a large mass and disintegrate and integrate during cyclones

That may sound hot, but at only 17 degrees Fahrenheit hotter than Earth's highest recorded temperature it's downright cozy compared to the -81F chills on the surface of Mars.

can anyone tell me why should fahrenheit, kelvin and "degree sign" be continued... why not just use celsius only??

on topic... i would rather land on mars, moons of mars, titan and europa than prefer to float for months in the sulfurous fumes of venus atmosphere...

You must see the line.

First we discover space. Then we settle it. Then we build our own planets.

Evry planet will always only be an alternative world. Some suit s better than others. In the end we will build our own worlds. dyson spheres and ring worlds.

Then we build our own planets.

it is easier terraforming worlds like mars which already have some gravity and atmosphere.

i suppose earth will become a pilgrimage world.

In the end we will build our own worlds. dyson spheres and ring worlds.

a "dyson sphere" is pointless... what is all that star's energy that the proponents intend for... certainly not sitting in a sunlit garden... the proponents want the star's energy to power present-style capitalism-based stock markets and consumer goods factories... the proponents don't intend a humanity which has "dune books" style minimal technology.

how is a smaller "ring world" superior to habitation/town dug into a asteroid which is spinnable??

Seeing nasa's urgency someting is comming
A killer comet or a flare from sun

Mars has onle 30% gravity. Its also easier to build a wooden ship than a space shuttle. As technology moves forward we do what must be done.

A spinnable asteroid is a great idea for a small space colony. But what i talk about is a so called micro dyson sphere.

Artificial spherical worlds, with artificial suns on a planetary scale.

You know Halo? The science behind it is correct. How would you feel as part of a civilisation cpable to build things like this?

then the second or third generations of life forms will be biologically made to physically evolve to that lower gravity... thicker bones and all that...

artificial spherical words are fine but again my question... artificial suns for what... unless it is for providing sun light, such things are pointless.

well, computer games are a artifact of consumerism without consideration for minimalization of technology or for being connected thoughtfully/spiritually/gently with nature... hence the halo game can show a ring-world but i don't like the idea.

thicker bones? The less gravity the more you lose bones.

It does not matter if you like the idea. People in 1850 did also not like the idea of ocean liners.

I dont believe dyson spheres 're a possibility because the gravitational attraction inside a uniform spherical shell is zero ergo we would need some form of gravity generators to keep the biosphere from drifting. Now how do we develop gravity for such large spheres???
Its definitely not happening in this century!!! :)

I bet @scorpionx @SarthakGanguly @BDforever and I would be playing volleyball on Venus soon ! :smokin:

What I can't seem to figure out whether it ought to be a Kashmiri vs Non Kashmiri team, a Bengali vs Non Bengali team or a Pakistani vs Indian team !

@BDforever - Bangladesh is, was and will always be East-Pakistan !

And don't you dare call me an Indian !
