Any idea what is this air to air missile????

i am posting from chinese defence forum

These outline the details, we can generally infer that this is an infrared-guided medium range air to air missiles, from its number F-80 speculated that the range may be 80 km. It should be installed to guide the head in the head, through the octagonal tapered optical observation window forward. The reason for using an octagonal cone head, it is in order to take into account the need to drag and does not affect the infrared optical observations. If you want to achieve, "the distance" range, then it should be equipped with a data link, in the first half of the flight data link flight and inertial guidance in close and then opened a wide field of view infrared seeker search target. The performance of its high estimate seeker can be found on the target about 20 kilometers away. That is, except the last active radar seeker to search for the target to open the boot infrared search system to find the target outside its operational processes and classes should be active radar guided AIM-120 air missiles of the same. This shows that the company has successfully developed excellent performance infrared optical system. The emergence of the gas rudder may indicate that the missile uses a two-speed system, in the last paragraph can then start flying rocket engine to track the target, or it may indicate that it take into account the need for close combat. Because in general, the maximum range of the missile from a rocket engine fuel already depleted by coasting, then of course, utterly useless gas rudder.

This missile is clearly directed at the target to go stealth, and the US Navy developed AIM-9X Block3 or PL-10 missile similar ideas in the aircraft industry, are locked up with a high-performance infrared guided radar stealth targets. But the F-80 to go further and start to try to develop a high-performance infrared seeker rather than the mid-range radar seeker missiles, China and the US over the previous two missiles were farther. Not only can be used to play stealth machine, too, can play a non-stealth aircraft. If the development is successful, the missile can almost be said to create a new era.

LOOks very sci -fi

Is init??

Is it for chinese 5th gen fighters ??

CHEERS

Looks like a work around for avoiding complexities with seeker track rates. So instead of a single seeker having to gimbal around and look for the target.. just put in five that cover the whole area.

From its wing design it look more Air to Ground missile like AGM-65, because it don't have TVC motor and enough control surfaces to maneuver fast.

How did you reach that conclusion?

The next ten to twenty years are going to be very interesting.

Astar, the developer of F-80,refused a request for an interview and declined to provide further information on the missile

Then why bother to advertise it at airshow? But given the low profile, it may indicate this missile is not for sale. They just trying to showcase this missile to the outside world.

ZT=“转帖zhuan tie” means “trans-post”.I haven't heard of this company but I viewed their website and it seem to be an private enterprise making aviation infrared detection devices.Their EODS pods looks nice and it is aiming at J10s and Flankers MLU project. But I really doubt its R & D capability.

Their F-80 have attended Zhuhai Airshow. It seems to be something like Mica-IR.But we have better product PL10 which shares the same idea with AIM-9X Block3.

Both PL-10 and AIM-9X Block3 do not have a range of 80 km
Moreover, they use special method to wide the vision angle.

If this picture is actually a real image, then it looks like a possible advance AAM design based on Heat and IR (image) guidance. The design ensures high G maneuverability and high AOA with multiple seeker technologies in place to potentially defeat low observable targets or to counter stealthy planes or drones.
But you'll need a radar to initially provide the target acquisition data to this missile. Not sure if the Chinese have anything in place at this time that can detect and feed target coordinates in flight for stealthy or low observable objects. This is probably a project at this point IMO

In the picture it is described as a medium range air-to-air missile...

All it says is medium range missile. Not air to air. Looks more like air to ground missile in my opinion.
