Pakistan to have 200 nuclear weapons by 2020: US think tank

200 seems a great deal, but split that with the build towards a solid sea deterrent, that will act as a second strike option, it's not that many.

500 will be a good figure to stop at. :woot:

Anyway, I hope such weapons are not used.

People here do realize that 50 nukes can easily wipe both nations, and any survivors would either die from radiation or starvation considering nothing would grow. Secondly, the sheer cost of maintaining these would be ridiculous.

No they can't,not even close to that.

Washington: Pakistan has the fastest growing nuclear weapons programme in the world and by 2020 it could have enough fissile material to produce more than 200 nuclear devices, a top American think tank has said.

"Though many states are downsising their stockpiles, Asia is witnessing a buildup. Pakistan has the fastest-growing nuclear programme in the world. By 2020, it could have a stockpile of fissile material that, if weaponized, could produce as many as 200 nuclear devices," Council on Foreign Relations has said.

The report 'Strategic Stability in the Second Nuclear Age', authored by George Mason University's Gregory Koblentz, has identified South Asia as the region "most at risk of a breakdown in strategic stability due to an explosive mixture of unresolved territorial disputes, cross-border terrorism, and growing nuclear arsenals."

Pakistan, the report said, has deployed or is developing 11 delivery systems for its nuclear warheads, including aircraft, ballistic missiles and cruise missiles.

"Pakistan has not formally declared the conditions under which it would use nuclear weapons but has indicated that it seeks primarily to deter India from threatening its territorial integrity or the ability of its military to defend its territory," the report said.

CFR said while Pakistan is focused predominantly on the threat posed by India, it is reportedly also concerned by the potential for the US to launch a military operation to seize or disarm Pakistani nuclear weapons.

"This concern is based in part on reported contingency planning by the US military to prevent Pakistani nuclear weapons from falling into the hands of terrorists," CFR said.

CFR said India is estimated to possess enough fissile material for between 90 and 110 nuclear weapons and is expanding its fissile material production capacity.

China, it said, is estimated to have 250 nuclear weapons for delivery by a mix of medium, intermediate, and intercontinental-range ballistic missiles and bombers.

"Though nuclear arsenals are shrinking in the rest of the world, Asia is witnessing a nuclear buildup. Unlike the remaining P5 countries, China is increasing and diversifying its nuclear arsenal," the report said.

How many nuclear weapons will India and Israel have by 2020? 500, 550 or 1000? When will we discuss Israel's nuclear program and covert Indian support for it?

An interesting clip from the movie "Wargames" released in 1983. Idea was of a supercomputer that calculates .. wins and losses for the optimum "game".While back then the idea was that pretty much any EAST-WEST camp confrontation would lead to an all out brawl... this is one scenario that shows up and the calculation is pretty much on the spot.

Would PAK have thermonuclear war heads? They have to enhance the quality by reducing the size and weight of their strategic nukes and only thermonuclear option make sense.

That suicide bomber mentality right there is the reason why close to 100,000 civilians and soldiers died in pakistan in the last decade.
Mr genius get out of your slum and educate yourself about the nuclear detonation mechanism . Nuclear bombs cannot be used in suicide attacks ,they have a highly sophisticated detonation mechanism .
100,000 is nothing as compared to 1.2 billion :enjoy:

Read the posts again...as far as I see...there are members from one country bragging about annihilation.

Its always multi dmensional..Redeem...who in the first place tested nukes in the region...twice? obviously somebody had to balance the equation...Somebody thought annihilation was theirs to distribute...and somebody had no other option but to survive.

Just curious...why do you need so many bombs...is it not 2-3 bombs enough to destroy a nation?..I mean if a city can be destroyed in 1945 with such a small bomb...then in 2014, with much advancement, why the numbers are so relevant in nuclear bomb inventory?....Because at the end of the day, no one is going to use more than 2-3 bombs i beleive..
