Yom Kippur War 1973: Why did Syria fail to take the Golan Heights?

Your mind is in denial mode.
My count based on all respectable historians, US military academy and even Egyptian chief of staff. Your account is based on nothing but ur fevered fantasies. Well what else can we expect from the person who seriously believes that Israel nuked Syria.

We know why they found only 5 tanks (a lie), and the whole brigade that was decimated was of you "special forces", you know it too, but too painful to bear.
You see, thats what I said. Egyptians thought in same way as u, that Israeli crossing is a lie they have nothing. As result they sent a brigade to death. You are a great example of their mindset.

You should see also the Egyptian count of it
I posted the Egyptian count in #19 above. But u deny it too.

Don't think my question has been answered.

I understand what happened on the Sinai front, but never understood why Syria's surprise attack failed.

The Sinai front and Golan fronts were very different.

On Sinai front Egyptians captured a narrow strip on 6 oct and then defended it from Israeli attacks till 14th Oct with their ATGMs. Only on 14th Oct they launched their major attack against the Israeli tanks for the first time. And it became a major failure.

On Syria front it was the opposite, they attacked the Israeli tanks from first hours and as result they got totally exhausted by 10th Oct.

Arabs always were much better in defence than in attack. Both Syrians and Egyptians.

P.S. Here is a great account of 23th brigade battle from the Egyptian guy:

They knew they were going to fail... the Egyptian military knew their mechanized units will be a practice targets for the Israeli air force... but the dumb Sadat insisted on launching an attack and leaving the SAM's umbrella, the Egyptian military chief of staff had a fight with Sadat because of that decision, he said to Sadat it will be like "offering our troops as a gift to Israeli air force" , but Sadat ignored him.

And let me tell you, the Israeli bullshit forces would have never been able to encircle the 3rd army if it wasn't for the American reconnaissance plane that helped Israel know about the gap.

that he
lped Israel know about the gap.

please do not use a sorry excuse here.

Soviet Commies were supporting Arabs. But you don't want to talk about them and only blame Americans for the defeat of Arab Armies.

Why? so one sided, and utterly biased.

Why?

your post is perfect example of

"those who refuse to learn from military history
are
bound to get defeated again
and again
and again

even the soviet were directly involved in the battle on the syrian side ^^

Your knowledge is poor. You repeating nonsense myths about leaving umbrella. In fact virtually all tanks were destroyed by Israeli tanks.

The gap was found by 87th recon battalion. Complaining about recon flights is very silly since Egyptians got massive help from Soviet MiG-25.

Yeap.

However this thread is quickly turning into yet another series of anti-Israeli conspiracy theories. Sad to see.

I know the basic details around the Yom Kippur War. Egypt and Syria launched a surprise attack on Israel on October 6, 1973. Egypt was able to cross the canal and establish a defensive perimeter 12km deep and use its SAM missiles to establish air cover over its forces.

At the same time Syria launched a massive armored offensive to take the Golan Heights. But somehow Israel was able to stop the Syrian offensive and then with Syria under pressure, Sadat ordered the Egyptians to launch an offensive attack deep into the Sinai which was a total failure.

This weakening of Egyptian Forces allowed the Israelis to cross the canal and encircle the Egyptian 3rd Army.

The lynchpin seems to be the Syrian attack on the Golan Heights. Had the Syrians been successful, the Arabs would have won and would have dictated the terms to Israel.

But can someone explain as to why Syria failed to take the Golan Heights?

The courage and capabilities of the Israeli 7th Armored Brigade and their defense of North Golan cannot be emphasized enough. Also, the sacrifices of the 188th (Barak) Brigade to stem the Syrian Advance is credited for holding back hundreds of Syrian Tanks, flanking irrespective. Brig. General Moshe Peled's leading of a division to repulse the Syrians had fought the Syrians to standstill, leaving hundreds of Syrian units and craft in smoldering ruins.

1- Proof ?

2- Proof ?

3 - Can you deny the American airlift that Gold Meir acknowledged Israel would have been destroyed without it ? Do you know more than Henry Kissinger that wanted Israel to now that US SAVED ISRAEL during the Yom Kippur war ?

And huh, what help from Mig-25 ?! they went to Egypt in 20 October ! at the end of the war ! and what help did they provide ?!

Operation Nicklegrass didn't begin until October 14th.

By that time, Syrian troops had been repulused from the Golan and Israel had advanced deep into Syria itself.

Egypt's ill advised offensive towards the Sinai passes had also been defeated.

So Nicklegrass was not a game changer but it did allow Israel to be more bold and undertake risky operations which will result in large losses but will prove strategically valuable such as the crossing of the Canal and encircling the Egyptian 3rd Army.

Oh my brother

Proof is in the pudding.

Anyone with basic knowledge of military history knows, Arabs suffered defeat in the end. 1973 war was a big fiasco for both sides but really bad for Egyptians and Syrians.

So please study instead of repeating "proof??? ", "proof??? ", "proof??? ", "proof??? ".......

Would you in 2014 ask for proof that earth orbits around the sun?

Would you?

1- Proof ?

Egypt attacked 4 Israeli well prepared divisions with 12 brigades. That deemed to fail. U can see what happened to Syrians when they attacked just 2 Israeli brigades with similar force. As for the Israeli air force, it did not have Maverick missiles that time. Attacking tanks with dumb bombs is not very effective since u need a direct hit plus it was heavily involved on Syrian front.

2- Proof ?
Recon flights of MiG-25 over Israel is well known thing. In adition during the war Soviets provided info from Cosmos 597 and 602 spy satellites.

The American aid started to arrive only on 14th Oct. When Israeli forces were already inside Syria and Egyptian attack was crushed. The soviet aid to Arabs started to arrive 4 days earlier on 10 Oct. So again complaining is silly.

Did you think Israel loves Pakistan or something ?! lol, you don't know that your air force fought against Israel in the Yom Kippur war ?

We are not talking about St. Valentines day and love and kissing.

Please focus on war history as related to 1973 war.

p.s. Open a separate thread on St. Valentines day if you like. Thank you.
