The Kunming, the first of China's Type 052D guided-missile destroyers was deployed to the disputed South China Sea to conduct the Joint Action 2014A naval exercise earlier this month according to our Chinese-language sister paper Want Daily.

Also known as the Chinese Aegis, Type 052D destroyers are the most advanced warships operated by the PLA Navy. Equipped with Active Electronically Scanned Array Radar System, the destroyer has a 64-cell vertical launching system to fire HQ-9 long-range air defense missiles and DH-10 cruise missiles. This class of destroyer is often compared with the Arleigh Burke-class destroyers of the United States Navy.

The exercise was launched to demonstrate the capability of the PLA Navy to launch anti-access and area denial strategies in the disputed region. In addition to the Kunming, the Haikou, a Type 052C destroyer, and a Type 054A frigate were also deployed to the South China Sea for the exercise. China is thought to have launched the exercise as a response to the Valiant Shield 2014 exercise launched by the United States near Guam.

Though Valiant Shield 2014 did not specify China as its imagined target, it was launched on the same day that Taiwan launched its annual Han Kuang exercises. Beijing seemingly views the two exercises as a joint drill launched by Washington and Taipei indirectly via data link.

Rear Admiral Mark Montgomery, the commander of the US Navy's Task Force 70, told the London-based Jane's Defence Weekly that the Valiant Shield held between Sept. 15-23 was a vital demonstration of Washington's commitment to its allies and partners in the Indo-Pacific region. During the exercise, the US Navy practiced intercepting a road-mobile intermediate-range ballistic missile system which resembles China's DF-26C missile, designed to carry out anti-access and area-denial strategies.

How many more are under construction ? and they look good

Dam you guys are fast and when will first Type 55 is expected to be completed

The steel cutting for the lead ship will be started by the end of this year, and the lead ship is likely being commissioned around 2017. By that time, we will likely already have 10 Type 052D in service.

USN intends to counter China by blocking the Malacca Straits. PLAN must control the Malacca Straits. If Singapore makes a wrong move, we annex them like we annexed Hong Kong.

Annexation is the forcible acquisition of a state's territory by another state, I don't remember that there was a war prior to the taking back of Hong Kong.

In the 1980's UK hoped to retain "administration" while handing over "sovereignty." When Deng Xiaoping heard from UK ambassador he subtly threatened military action. UK changed their minds.

There was a treaty where both sides agreed upon. Hinting military action is not the same as actually exercising military action. There was no such action, hence no annexation, it was reunification, the same as West Germany and East Germany, Russia and Crimea.

Annexation is according to international law an illegal act. Do you want to tell us that China's possession of Hong Kong is illegal?

Singapore is not our land from beginning, we don't need it.

BTW, the DF-21D/25/26/27 will sink any ship who attempts to block the Malacca Strait and the Indian Ocean.

Um,Malacca Strait can be blocked by SSKs while it is also a good place for ASW combats. So,it's true that we should strengthen
ocean capapilities.Thailand and Indonesia are also potential partner:)

Leave him alone. It certainly appears that he intends to be outrageous. Hard to have a conversation with someone bent on trolling.
