What's new

Finally! Made in India Smart Phones as Micromax starts to manufacture at home!

Components are still made in China but the assembly has started in India.

right, basically take india back to days before it opened its market up.
Debatable. US policy is protecting its farmers from completion. I dont see that take US back to days. And if you don't know there is extra tax in India on luxury imports. eg iPhone5S sold in US is 10000 Rs cheaper than it is sold in india
No market can be closed but it sure can be restricted in few areas. Thanks to western policies India can learn. The things done in food and drugs can be done in electronics.

Considering India's enormous existing and potential market for mobile devices, I'm surprised this wasn't done sooner.

What is the scope or their production though, how much can they produce and how efficiently?
Its nothing without silicon industry. Now its just assembly. It will be a real deal when India have a decent silicon industry. Japan is doing that in India. Lets see how long dose it take.

Are you crazy? Why me policy.do you want the government to discourage investment into India? Remember, Indian electronic industry HAS TO COMPETE with global giants. Our current industry is rubbish except a few areas like air conditioners etc. We need external competition to ensure that indian makers are on their toes all the time.

Micromax rose to prominence by constantly competing with foreign brands in India.

If you want to bring a racer out of a dud, you have to make him run.

India is market of 1.2 billion people so no one gonna leave this market at any cost.

I want them to force to manufacture their product locally in India and this is possible by imposing extra tax of imported items...
You can take example of automobile industry where we became self sufficient and also 6th largest exporter by this same policy.

farmers and certain goods to sustain local economy is different than imposing a rule for all electronics. India has no " free" trade deal. the goal should be a free trade deal because Indian goods are comparatively cheaper and would get more sales in the US. i.e. like made in china products.

The bold and underline part is Targeted sector or priority sector for US and it will be different from state to state.
Free trade deal will sale indian goods no-doubt but it will also make India a dumping ground for cheaper mass produced goods killing local industry. So India have to save its industry same as US is saving its farmers and applying strict regulations on cheap Indian pharmacy. No country is willing to sacrifice its any sector for forgine one. So they just find one reason or another.
Everybody save its local industry and goods.

What about this?

Any ideas what happened the GoI's plans to manufacture all the semi-conductors for electronics sold in India in India?

you are making no sense ...first on the targeted sector bit and next saying a free trade deal with the US = a dumping ground. you might have mistaken US goods as chinese...

electronics market is different than protecting some individual local food source through subsidies....

This aren't gonna happen in the next 30 years. Perhaps never.

Only a small portion of Micromax smartphones sold in India are made in India, and that with Chinese parts and components, which makes assembling a better word than manufacturing.

India needs to invest big, real big, and fast, in the necessary facilities.

Its a difficult task to compete the Chinese manufacturers in the electronics segment. But with a little bit of government willingness, I don't see no reason why it cannot be done.We have all that we need to setup production facilities. The companies normally get discouraged by the taxation rules.A few tax free zones are there in India, like Pondicherry, Goa etc, but clearly much more has to be done by the government.I hope the new government that comes to power after the elections will do something about it.

Exactly, as long as we don't have our own MediaTek, LCD screen manufacturers, it doesn't really mean anything.

try little harder.

really !!! Free trade deal favours the mass producers who has already have prodcution facitlies and ahead in tech. So which country it would be ???
And what is Indian export to US. Do have a look at e list and see what makes the majour portion of it

Look it as sectors. US is protecting its Primary sector. Cause the less work power and lesser resources so you think US protecting its primary sector - (Agriculture/mining/fishing) is different from India procting its secondary ( production/ processing on primary ) well good luck.

There is no wonder why GOI dont share your opinion.

UPA govt, wants India to remain poor and worship one family like North Korea. BJP will get this done.
NOKIA already manufactures in India. We can not do this in a bog way as we do not have Fab facilities. UPA did try to bring the investment in 2007, but that fizzled out due to the financial meltdown in 2008.

Recently, the high capital intensive FAB foundry has got in-principle nod from cabinet.

I can't try harder to make sense out of nonsense.

You said a US free trade agreement with India meant dumping cheaper goods into India. You were wrong, because US goods are not what I call cheaper goods like the chinese ones. in fact it will benefit india more because since it costs less to produce goods for India and will increase indian products exports of a higher quality into a country with the strongest purchasing power.

what can indian export? India | Office of the United States Trade Representative more of what is listed in there

US is protecting its primary sector? what is that sector and what protections are in place?

GOI does share my opinion Free Trade Agreement with European Union in suspended animation till new govt takes over - The Times of India
