SIALKOT : Development work on Head Marla Hydro Power Project is in full swing and it would be completed at estimated cost of Rs.3049.74m. The construction of spillway and power house had been further accelerated and would be completed in April this year. The experts of a Chinese firm “SINOTEC” are supervising the development work of the project. Sources further said, Kaplan type turbines of 4X2 would be installed to generate electricity and after completion this power project will generate 7.64 megawatt electricity.

Besides, the construction of two dams on Upper Chenab Canal had already been completed and this Hydro Power Project after completion will generate 50.50 Geggawatt hours (GWh) electricity per year sources added.

One of my cousin is working at an under construction dam and he tells me that there are 3 shifts and they are working on the project 24 hours a day. Each shift is divided into 4 teams. Only 1 team can take a break at a time. The other 3 work until team 1 is finished.

50 GW per year is 50 million units per year. My rough estimate is that the cost of production of one unit, including loan servicing etc would be less than Rs 5. That means that the difference between the expensive Furnace oil generated electricity is more than Rs. 11.

PPP government refused to provide sovereign guarantee since this was a project of their political opponents. The screwed Pakistan for sake of political games. Had this project been commissioned three years ago, like it was supposed to have been, half of it would have been paid off by the savings.

We need dozens of these all across irrigated areas in Pakistan. I've read that by some estimates, Punjab alone has potential to generate about 2000 MW electricity from irrigation network. That is like having a dam on river Indus for cheap electricity.

50 Gwh from 7.64mw is unrealistic because the hydro power has a capacity factor of around 50% max here ur talking about 75% that's highly unlikely.
