Power Import from Nepal, Bhutan - India declines to give Dhaka corridor

India has disagreed to give Dhaka corridor to import power from Nepal and Bhutan through a cross-border transmission line to meet a crying need for electricity at home.

The refusal came on the final day of a two-day Indo-Bangladesh dialogue on power-sector cooperation in the city Thursday.

“They (India) said it is a tripartite matter. So we could not discuss the matter without Nepal or Bhutan,” an official of Bangladesh Power Division quoted the Indian side as saying on the proposal during the secretary-level power talks.

Bangladesh Power Division secretary Monwar Hossain led the host side at the dialogue while the Indian delegation was headed by P Uma Sankar, power secretary of the Indian power ministry.

But, the Indian power secretary assured the Bangladesh side of informing government’s high-ups of the matter.

“Bangladesh and Nepal have been working toward a bilateral cooperation in the field of hydropower development in Nepal,” an official of the Power Division informed.

Earlier, a delegation of the Power Division led by Md Mofazzel Hossain visited Nepal in July last year to discuss various aspects of the proposed power-sector cooperation.

During a meeting with the Nepalese counterpart, the Power Division delegation discussed constructing a dedicated power-transmission line between the two countries through Indian territory, a power division official said.

The official also said both the sides were interested to have power connectivity through the Indian power grid line via Duhabi-Purnia-Barapukuria or Anarmani-Siliguri-Barapukuria route.

The meeting also discussed various aspects of power trade through the under-construction Bheramara HVDC station, using the 400KV Muzaffarpur-Dhalkebar cross-border transmission line, subject to approval from the Indian authorities.

“The Nepalese counterpart has already agreed to initiate a joint-venture hydroelectric project in Nepal,” the Power Division officials informed.

Dhaka has decided to approve a technical report on allowing India to lay power transmission line its two north-eastern provinces to Pashchim Banga through Bangladesh in exchange for some of the power.
The transmission line will transport hydro-electricity produced in India’s Arunachal province to Pashchim Banga and in exchange, Bangladesh wants a share on the electricity at the Barapukuria substation, officials said.
The prime minister’s energy adviser Tawfiq-E-Elahi Chowdhury at a meeting on Thursday asked power division officials to approve a report prepared by a joint-technical team, which includes six power officials of Bangladesh and India, a power division official told New Age.
Three members of the Bangladesh side in the technical team at the meeting explained the primary findings of the report.
Tawfiq, the state minister for power, energy and mineral resources, Md Enamul Huq, and other power sector officials attended.
The prime minister, Sheikh Hasina, on August 6 gave her consent in principle to carry to power transmission trade between Bangladesh and India in accordance with the draft report the technical committee.
Hasina is also the minister for power, energy and mineral resources.
‘Now the report will be discussed in the next joint steering committee meeting,’ a power division official said. The committee explored three options for the trans-border power trade.
The joint steering committee is headed by the power secretaries of Bangladesh and India.
The report suggested the establishment of a 765kV double-circuit transmission line connecting four substations at Bongaigaon in Assam, Jamalpur and Barapukuria in Bangladesh and Purnia in Pashchim Banga.
The report also studied the potential of the establishment of a multi-terminal bi-pole transmission line connecting four substations at Rangia or Rowta in Assam, Jamalpur and Barapukuria in Bangladesh and a suitable substation in Pashchim Banga.
But the Bongaigaon-Prunia transmission line via Bangladesh would need to traverse a shorter distance and face fewer natural obstacles, a power division official said.
The technical committee halted the third option of establishment of a 400kV transmission line from Silchar of Assam connecting Meghnaghat or Bhulta and Bheramara in Bangladesh to transport the electricity to Bahrampur in Pashchim Banga.
‘Bangladesh is not considering the option right now as India is not installing any big power plants in the area,’ a power division report said.
Bangladesh hopes to import 500MW of power from India’s western region from October this year through a 400kV transmission line between Bheramara of Kushtia in Bangladesh and Bahrampur in Pashchim Banga.

Dhaka opens power corridor to New Delhi

This news is old. But this issue is being discussed a lot now. Is it logical to allow India power corridor while they are not caring us at all? (LBA & TEESTA)

Better for BDs to welcome Middle East investors to make power plants in the required power regions of BD.

Dream on........ We are not and never will be..... Friends with backstabber liars:pissed: ..........

What Nonsense is this some people may hate each other but the Relations are Very good between the 2 Countries

What I wonder is, those Awami Bangllies who always nagged against W.pk speak not a word against its Master India.

Allah has been very kind on India, as India have won 6 out of 10 SAFF championships so far. Burn. :yay:

Why would I burn, have you seen the Afghan team? They look more solid than the India team and look at the current status in their country. Who's not to say they won't win the SAFF cup again. A country of 1 billion and you could only win 6 SAFF cups against some of the poorest countries in the region. Hats off to you mate.

We are very happy that Afghanistan won, most of us have already congratulated them http://www.defence.pk/forums/members-club/277115-afghanistan-won-saff-championship-2013-a.html.

I'm just letting you know that with Allah's blessing we have won it 6 times already.
