Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Air Force, Lieutenant-General Viktor Bondarev paid a working visit to Pakistan, the Russian Embassy in this South Asian country said on Tuesday.

The commander of the Russian Air Force visited this Islamic republic for the first time in the history of Russian-Pakistani relations.

During Bondarev’s visit in Islamabad he met with the military officials from the Pakistani army command. In particular, he had the negotiations with his Pakistani counterpart Tahir Rafiq Butt.

It was reported that the negotiators already discussed the condition and the prospects of cooperation between the Air Forces of the two countries in the Pakistani capital.

I don't know how this trip is going to benefit Pakistan, since Russia is strongly committed to India & it is clear Russia will not give any Military Hardware to Pakistan, this was clearly said by Russians during their visit to India.

Theres a lot of bitter history involved between Pakistan and Russia. We can break the ice by apologizing for the 1980's when we helped in the defeat of the Soviet union by making the mistake of interfering in Afghanistan. We should never have supported terrorists in the first place during that time and hopefully we won't make the mistake of doing all that again-US behest or not. I think the war industry in Afghanistan was very wrong and we should have done everything to avoid interfering in Afghanistan. Instead Zia Ul Haq was keen to support Jihadis.

Don't loose your pants only to get some butter:
Pakistan has nothing to apologize and shouldn't. It Russia who is looking for Pakistan but not Pakistan looking for Russia. If Pakistan will change approach of US's policy toward its development then i don't think Russia's role will posses any remarkable advantages for Pakistan.

You have no self respect typical. Do you forget it was the soviets who saved bartis in 1971 from USA and vetoed resolutions that could have saved East Pakistan?? :disagree:

Apology... :hitwall:

Russia isn't going to offer much militarily, but this is just a start.

With India diversifying its fleet, Russian doors might open sooner than later. Pakistan being cash strapped though doesn't help.

But this just shows that door is open, throw the dollars.

You are right in some extent , but Pakistani people usually perceive this as total victory (common mind set within our people) which never was a fruitful scenario. We experienced the degree of our stance & hidden rocks against us. In many previous threads related to Pak-Russia relations, this is proved as many of us counted a small step a big victory or many were ready to stepped back from crucial issues only to get some importance in their eyes. Well, I am saying that we should put foundation of a reasonable and respectable relations with RF but not on the cost of respect & our relations with our US & EU. That’s another issue that we are failed to prove ourselves in front of USA & EU to change their mind set. Russia itself learning western technology to give a new line of action for their military research complex although I am not saying their technology has not value in front of western.

Throw dollar but there where it will bring you maximum advantages. But today that’s not easy to get advantage when we are on initial stages toward constructive relations with RF.

any special thing revealed after this visit specially co-operation with PAF. ?

Russia is a much better ally than the United States. They have not made one demand from India. America and Pakistan can work together but currently much is wrong with the relationship and we should try to develop a relationship with other nations. This includes China and Russia. Pakistan has everything to apologize to Russia for. We supported terrorists and jihadis against Russia who are now killing us Pakistanis very brutally. There is no easy escape from this problem. Pakistan should discuss bilateral trade and look towards a new relationship with Russia. We made a huge mistake in the 1980's which we should recognize as we are paying for it right now.

Son, you have no idea what are you talking about. Leave it. Just concentrate what i wrote in post 4 & 7.

I have a question for Pakistani's. The Soviet's were resisted in Afghanistan because they were God-less (atheist) communists. Now they are no longer communists/atheist. Russians are going back to Orthodox Christianity and Central Asian Muslims are returning to Islam. Why increased relation with Russian Federation should be a problem now?

Does increased relation with Russia mean a reduced relation with the US or China? If so why? China itself has very good relation with RF (SCO).

Some one mentioned Soviet support of India in 1971, I just want to point out that I think Pakistani's should not blame others for 1971 defeat. Those who planned and executed Operation Searchlight were the main architects of defeat. Russians did what cold war geopolitics demanded from them.

That's what Pakistan did to Soviets, need of the Hour why then Russians complain and keep grudge of the past.

I think Russian objection was mainly about use of religious extremism as a geopolitical weapon, which has a tendency to backfire. In hindsight, they were correct, don't you think? Russians have been dealing with Muslims since the days of Golden Horde for about 800 years. Early Russians even made a choice between Islam and Christianity and they chose Christianity because it matches more with their lifestyle and because their European cousins already were Christians, if I remember correctly.

I am not sure how much grudge Russians have about the past, like all practical people, I would imagine that they are more focused on the future.

I hope I am not poking nose. But my curiosity is kind of academic and related to my theories on geopolitics. My prediction is that Russian role will be much more important for South West Asia, from Pakistan and Afghanistan to Iran and Turkey, than lets say China, EU or USA. Sunni Arabs in Asia will be exception to this rule.

You mean when Soviet Union signed a Security Pact with India around 1967 and helped them defeat Pakistan in 1971.

Wo kehtay hai na, "an eye for an eye". They took one of our wings and we took their entire Empire. Hasaab brabar.
