Why China Lags on Innovation and Creativity

...

How rapidly can China's economy move up the development ladder and become genuinely innovative and technology-driven?

Xu Xiaoping, one of China’s leading investors, “doesn’t think China will be able to produce its own equivalent of Steve Jobs or Bill Gates in this generation,” according to a recent article in The Washington Post. He expects that it will take “at least 20 years” before China’s economy becomes truly innovative and creative.

Surely its policies are directed toward that end: China has rapidly expanded its spending on universities and research and development; it has attracted R&D centers from abroad; and its level of innovation (as tracked by patents) has increased substantially.

A recently published study I conducted with my colleagues Charlotta Mellander and Haifeng Qian from Cleveland State University suggests China still has a long way to go before it becomes an advanced center for innovation and creativity. Our study, published in the journal Environment and Planning, assessed the knowledge economy across China’s major regions, tracking levels of college grads, the creative class, high-tech industries, and major universities and examining their effects on regional economic performance. Using the statistical technique of structural equation modeling, we gauged the effect of those factors over time, teasing out their strengths both individually and in combination with other factors.
When you have no freedom of thoughts in China, there is no innovation and creativity.

This is why there is nothing innovative coming out of China. The lack of political freedom is starting to drag down on China.

haha india has so much freedom and it is the largest democracy as it proclaims but it loses out to China miserably in lmost all counts of developing and civilised indices.

everyone is entitled to their opnion including Xu.
China may not have free political thinking but the state never forbade to try challenging scientific ideas. And it would be dumb to assume so. The kind of picture Xu is painting is that of imperial Romans who would send Socrates to death for some free thinking!

As long as the country is prosperous as a whole, China can do without fat cats like Bill Gates and Steve Jobs. They are helpful only for a small segment of a society and are good for a conversation piece.

Of course China is creative. We are world leaders in anti-ship ballistic missiles, high speed trains, computing / electronics and green technology.

In social sciences, China is the only country to have experienced and managed such tremendous economic growth and social transformation since 1949 from an agrarian, war-torn country to a modernized superpower. If any other country in the future were to experience this same kind of development and transformation, they would look to China's policies for guidance.

That's actually just Western propaganda. Of course China has free political thinking. Like any other country, you can't advocate overturning the government by force, that's all. Anybody is free to believe in Western propaganda if they wish, but the majority don't because we recognize it as nothing more than a Western plot to contain and exploit China.

Its not about India. Remain on topic.

But he would never get the "Terrorist" fame which every Muslims or Middle Eastern person is entitled too.. He will just go down as another terrorist. Hypocrisy at its best. Let make world insecure together.

I think we are talking about China's in-capabilities and Copy paste technology....Where India came into this...:hitwall:

Why Korean again?

Japan is rich. If you are Japanese and trying to immigrate to US, they should arrest you as soon as your plane lands in US. You are running from something in Japan. That is why only 5 people from Japan immigrate to US each year.

Apply that logic to Koreans. There must be something wrong with you if are Korean and trying to immigrate to US.

The one child policy has created havoc with the mentality of young chinese... they can only think of someone doting on them...

There is no comparison between South Korea and Japan. Hong Kong and Singapore are better off than the average South Korean, and Seoul can be wiped out by North Korea anyday.

Where are those innovation and creativity coming from free and democratic India? Just take a look at contemporary Chinese artist. A bunch of them are fetching premium prices for their artworks. I don't know one Indian contemporary artist coming close to any of them.
