Extinct woolly mammoth to be recreated? - Hindustan Times

Scientists are now looking forward to recreate a woolly mammoth, which walked on Earth 10,000 years ago.Russian academics have signed a deal with a controversial Korean scientist to clone a woolly mammoth preserved in permafrost in Siberia. Hwang Woo-Suk - who created the world’s first cloned dog, Snuppy, in 2005 – will implant the nucleus from a mammoth cell into an elephant egg to create a mammoth embryo, the Daily Mail reported.

The embryo will then be implanted into an elephant’s womb. The Koreans say research could begin this year.

Vasily Vasiliev, vice rector of North-Eastern Federal University of the Sakha Republic, signed the pact with Hwang Woo-Suk of South Korea’s Sooam Biotech Research Foundation this week.

The agreement follows the discovery of mammoth bones with well-preserved bone marrow in Siberia last summer.

Hwang Woo-Suk is a controversial scientist some of whose research into human cloning was revealed to be fake. But since then, his institute has successfully cloned other creatures like cows, dogs and coyotes.

“The first and hardest mission is to restore mammoth cells,” Sooam researcher, Hwang In-Sung, said.

“This will be a really tough job, but we believe it is possible because our institute is good at cloning animals,” In-Sung added. The Korean biotech foundation asserted that the research would begin this year, as soon as the Russians ship the remains.

IMO its a huge practical difficulties to clone that mammoth. The mammoth specimen was identified in Siberian region and they preserved it in frozen condition still probability of getting viable DNA is obscure. In general specimen having tendency to lose its DNA even in frozen conditions(-80 degree Celsius) surely they will get some fragmented DNA product . If everything is proceeding according to their plan even then diploid cells may create problems in segregation and immuno-compatability matters becoz today elephant (homology is a major concern) is distant relative of mammoths. Anyhow best luck for that research team.

it will only survive in a lab, no chance of this thing surviving in the wild. there is a reason it got extict. what a waste of money!

I just love reading the utter confidence people have in spewing a post or the sake of posting :). So the dogs and others animals he cloned all died in the lab? you do know why they went extinct- it had nothing to do with their DNA.

Elaborate the above

well the thing is.. they could extract dna.. or pieces of it and put it together.. but would it be complete?

recreating mitochondrial dna is not that far away, humans can already recreate protein. There is a reason these things got extinct, because they couldn't adapt to their surroundings. Darwinism 101 "survival of the fittest"

there is a reason thing thing can't survive in the wild though it looks hella badass.

Why does the world need a Woolly mammoth? So that we can breed them and have rich people use them as fur?
How about the "controversial" scientists do something useful, like cure cancer or something....

open a new tab and Google it, if you missed that part in school.

I think u try to cover up ur ignorance.

They cloned dogs or goats previously means they got DNA frm live samples(biopsy) not frm specimen(autopsy) there is lot of difference between those two and they suppose to spend lot.

That fellow not even mentioned abt DNA and he not argued that DNA played impt role in extinction(that not possible also). But u told that there is no connection between extinction and DNA. Still I don't knw wat u trying 2 say?

Somebody thanked u for your great post funny.

they can do many many things, map dna, manipulate it, create it... even living tissues and cells... and they cannot cure cancer?? they can cure cancer.. they dont want to, because they give hope to those suffering and their familys and they get very very rich off it... they dont want to cure cancer.... and it is perhaps one of the most fkd thing someone can get and go through.. its horrible.... doctors, scientist , drug companies.. care only for cash...

A woolly mammoth fur jacket would be awesome to own, i'd shell out good money for a woolly mammoth coat. Sounds warm :hang2:

come on.. seriously... if they wanted to cure it they could... they prey on peoples hope... they rip u off.. u obviously dont know anyone or have been thru someone very close who has died from it

here.. they say ok we wil cut it out.. even tho once u cut it.. it grows and spreads quicker... or they say we can give radiation or chemo etc... it doesnt do much.. just gives person no quality of life at all.. and have to pay thousands for it... or they say ok u r gunna die but we can cut u open etc and extend your life... ohh by how much doc?? oh maybe 3 weeks?? lol in mean time you forked out another $1000 just for that service and 3 extra weeks maybe... and more time with little quality of life recovering
