Thar coal gasified project has completed successfully on Wednesday, member of the Science and Technology Planning Commission, Dr Samar Mubarakmand, said.

Talking to Aaj news, he said that the project would bring prosperity in the country. “Pakistan has enough coal reserves that can provide electricity to the country for more than 500 years,” he said.

He said that development work is in progress and the first 50 megawatts gasified project has almost been completed.

He said that the project is to cost Rs8.898 billion with a foreign exchange component of Rs 5.847 billion that was approved by the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council last year.

Dr Mubarakmand said that the success of the Thar coal project will lead to investment from the leading international companies.

He said that several foreign companies wanted to participate in the project and had shown interest.

He said that fifty per cent coal-fired power generation works has already been done, while the rest would be completed within a months.

With the completion of this project, the nation would get cheap and sufficient power supply thus resolving the current pestering energy crisis, he added.

Dr. Samar said it is for the first time in Pakistan that the coal gasification is being launched on commercial basis and abundant and cheap electricity will be available.

He said the coal gasification was already producing 50000MW around the world, as the cost of electricity per unit is relatively low.

He said the four continents in the world are working on this project, as this method has enhanced energy efficiency reaching to 76 per cent.

He said the new growth strategy of the country is being emphasised on power generation through coal.
He said our installed capacity of thermal generation is 12000MW against hydel generation of 9000MW.

If this is true then it is the greatest news I have heard regarding Pakistan. Dr. Mubarakmand is one of the most famous and well respected Pakistani scientist so I am somewhat encouraged. The article did not mention any time frame. It would be nice if this can be done in next couple of years, because the Pakistani Industry is suffering right now.

Most countries around the World get more than 50% of their electricity from coal. France gets more than 80% of its energy needs filled by coal. this sounds really exciting.

:pakistan:

Thumbs up to Dr Mand and his team. He is a real son of the soil

Yes agreed. If its true then no doubt its one great news. Since last couple of years I think this is first good news I heard about our energy future plans.

wow great ...
Mr Samar Mubarak is one of ma fav sceintists /persons in Pakistan...
hope this works well..

Thar-Coal project to produce cheap electricity: Dr Samar

ISLAMABAD: Renowned scientist Dr Samar Mumbarkmand on Saturday said the country had third biggest coal reserves which could be utilized for producing cheap electricity.

Talking to Pakistan Television, he said that scientists were working on the Thar-Coal project to meet the growing demand of the electricity in the country. The estimated cost of the project is $115 million, he said.

The Thar-Coal project will yield 100 Mega Watt (MW) electricity, he added

He said that 40 per cent electricity in the world is generated through coal.

Dr.Samar Mumbarakmand said besides producing of cheaper electricity, 100 million barrel diesel and gas could be produced through Thar-coal which would be sufficient for 30 years.

Thar-coal field has enough reserves for 500 years, he said.

He said that foreign countries had shown keen interest in the project.

He hoped that after the success of the project, foreign companies would come forward for investing in this sector.

Dr.Samar said that the massive support of government was available to continue the project.

He said that gasifires have been introduced which are being effective and result-oriented.
It is the government’s top priority to improve the energy sector, he said. Dr.Samar said that there is a serious need to focus on utilizing coal which is available in the biggest quantity.

He said that investors can be obtained 20 per cent profit after investing their money in this sector.

The scientist said: “It is a cost effective project which must be implemented in letter and spirit for overcoming the energy crisis in the country.”

He said that the project will start producing gas by August this year. He added that the project will also yield cheap diesel.

“We will try to use the Thar water for irrigation purpose, and for this, we are working on it,” he said.

Great News,Thar coal is best solution to our problems.
Its better to generate electricity from thar Coal than 14 $/MMBTU natural gas from Iran and 22 $/MMBTU imported LPG.

Our Govt should made all investment needed from local sources otherwise the project will be like Reckodak coal mines.

what quality of Coal is that ?

If that will be exported or only used domestically ??????

If one reads the story, work is still being carried out, and the project is not yet completed, nor is it producing power. I am sure it will happen soon.

well im not that big scholar but if the main argument is that the coal is not of good quality or have higher contents of sulphur etc then instead of converting them to gas to feed into the gas powerplant, one can put up fluidized bed powerplants.
converting coal to gas to feed into gas powerplant or getting powerplant suitable for low quality coal or may be one with higher sulphur contents. i think the later is better option

well the project to produce the gas is complete but needs some investment to make electricity

but nevertheless its such an incouraging news for energy starving pakistan, hope it starts producing electricity before 2013
