What's new

India and Pakistan are united by language and history, divided by commerce

See, just in a few minutes. We've already come up with many possibilities. This goes to show that the potential is there.

Of course the potential is there.

I have witnessed the competitiveness of Indians first hand. Trust me. We can match the best in the world and excel it.

We need to focus on our manufacturing and infrastructure first of all.

That also suggest that india's exports are limited by their products - and have reached their nadir. Also india is no where to be seen in our top 10 trading partners.

I do not know how you came to that conclusion, since Pakistani are ready to buy overpriced smuggled goods..when regular channels of trade are not open.
IF cheaper regular channel is opened up, obviously trade volume will increase.

But to what degree - that is sheer speculation. I don't know if you know that Afghan transit trade is responsible for the largest amount of illegal trade. There will still be a problem for india to compete in other sectors, in automobiles it will struggle to compete because we have our own domestic industry.

You think you can compete with one of the largest producers of automobiles and auto parts in the world with your current auto industry? Given a level playing field?

Seriously?

Think again.

Also China is now producing high tech products, ie ipods, laptops, semi conducters, etc and etc. I am afraid india would struggle to compete at this moment.

Can you give some examples of pakistan's automobile industry?

Yeah but that industry has a powerful lobby, their is zero chance of india being given a level playing field?? We are not going to put our own workers out of a job - to let your industry in.

There are many areas in which Indian products can actually compete with and beat Chinese products.

Pharmaceuticals being one of them

So far I have managed not to laugh, but you are going well out of Lines... Could you Please explain the bolded Part??? Does pakistan have an Automobile Industry?

We know India is lacking in this field, but can you name any popular Chinese laptop or music players?
Ipod is a flagship Apple product, china has no credibility in it.

Rafi, I'm not trying to be smart but there are two threads on this forum. 'Made in India vehicles' and 'Made in Pakistan vehicles'. Please go take a look at them and you will see the vast difference between your automobile industry and ours. What I'm saying is India's is ahead, and by quite a margin so if your industries had to compete with Indian cars. Your companies would be forced to improve. Again... win-win situation.

As you can see it is a fairly large domestic market.

Put your workers out of job? How exactly will that happen?

If Tata or Mahindra sets a plant in Pakistan, it'll actually provide jobs rather than put people out of jobs.

Or are you really that unfamiliar with the concept of FDI?
