An underwater tunnel in Bangladesh built by a Chinese company has marked the civil works completion of its south tube.

Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Tunnel, the first underwater tunnel in South Asia, is located at the estuary of the Kanapuri River in Chittagong City, and connects the east and west banks of the Kanapuri River.

Constructed by China Communication Construction Co Ltd, the tunnel runs 9.3 km long with a design speed of 80 km per hour. The project was supported by the Export-Import Bank of China with preferential credit.

Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina joined a celebration on Saturday virtually from her official residence Ganabhaban in Dhaka, appreciating all efforts involved in the construction of the project.

Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Li Jiming said this tunnel will significantly optimize local transportation and will facilitate connectivity between Bangladesh and neighboring countries, demonstrating Bangladesh's pivotal role in regional connectivity, and a hub among the Belt and Road countries.

The project is also the first large-diameter underwater shield tunnel undertaken by a Chinese company overseas.

Already we have two tunnels under Hooghly river in Kolkata as part of Kolkata metro project going operational at end of 2023 or 2024.
The project was done by Indian technology and by a govt organization.

My money is on the Chinese company. Indian projects always run late.
 
It does not matter if the tunnel is underwater or underground. The credit goes to Chinese money and the Chinese company that build it.

What are the contributions from BD? Nothing except getting some bribe money that Hasina stashed away in a Swiss Bank.

BD people should build all the infrastructures with its own trained manpower. What is the benefit of, Porer Dhone Poddari? Bloody Porgacha country, always begging other countries for donations.

Project executed by Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation (KMRCL) - a govt company. Build by Indian company Afcons (an Indian company) with supervision from Russian company Transtonnelstroy. The technology was same as used in eurostar tunnel. Consultation was done by IIT - M, IIT-KGP. The hardware were German. Finance Japan.

No international company can complete with Indian companies in India in infrastructure projects leaving aside critical and sophisticated technologies like bullet trains. Even bullet train elevated tracks and stations are being built by Indian companies only, the Japanese are only giving the technical aspects.

Bold part: The planning, mathematical analysis with the uses of certain formulas in selected codes and standards, and detailed design of a complex structure are more complex than the construction part of a project.

And I can see these parts are done by the Japanese. I believe they are using either BS codes or American codes like ACI, ASCE, AASHTO, and others.

Well congrats. I am aware of the Kolkata Metro tunnel under Hooghly river which faced some serious issues. India is a large country and it is not surprising that some engineering expertise and talent will be available within the 1.4 Billion populace to organize capital projects.

Karnaphuli is a road tunnel system, with two tubes (two single directional lanes in each tube). It is the first road tunnel and will be inaugurated soon and made operational (maybe when approach roads in the South side of the tunnel get completed). I will post some videos when I get a chance.

BTW Dhaka underground tunnel MRT work was just started - which is also and actual deeper tunnel (maybe 20~30m underground) and not a cut/cover situation like some other metros. Almost like Mumbai MRT tunneling situation.

Well let's be honest. Int'l companies of course CAN compete as far as quality (but not at the same Indian-demanded prices), and Indian govt. organizations PREFER Indian construction firms, and that too govt. ones. Primarily because standards in India and the price they are willing to pay for those standards are not what Western or Japanese companies can compete with, in a bid.

The term "International" means the whole globe - and even leaving aside the West and Japan (pricewise uncompetitive), we have China and Korea in the mix, who did 90% of the projects in Bangladesh. And they did rather well - I'd say.

What matters in a capital project is quality and longevity. Bangladesh is a small country and talent-wise rather impoverished. We have a serious lack of engineering talent. We are not in a position where Ph.D's are being tram conductors - an oversupply of talent. So we will spend more money and maybe get more quality with better MTBO figures.

Don't want to go into an argument over this - let's just call a spade a spade.

Lol, what an ignorant comment. BD economy and people life's will improve with this facilities that help boast every single aspect of BD. Shorten transport time. Improve competitiveness.
